1994 Ford Ranger 4x4
StanGlover replied to StanGlover's topic in Model Trucks: Pickups, Vans, SUVs, Light Commercial
If anyone has tips on how to more accurately represent ‘90s aero composite headlight lenses I’d love to hear it. If the kit actually has clear lenses, they end up looking “too clear”, more like 2000s headlights. And just painting solid chrome lenses white doesn’t really work either... -

After loosing out on several full detail AMT Ranger kits on eBay, I gave up and picked up this promo kit for $10. I was hoping to just do some quick detailing and not repaint the whole thing, but the plastic was discolored around the door mirrors for some reason. Also the splash graphics were stickers and looked way too toy-like in person. I repainted the body in Tamiya X-13 Metallic Blue with XF-56 Metallic Gray for the bumpers and flares. Not much else to it! Hopefully Round 2 will re-release these at some point, I’d love to do a full build of the step-side Splash version!

Dodge Magic Van

How the heck did you get 40 year old MPC decals to work?? Especially one as large as that??? The ones I’ve tried disintegrated the second water hit them. Glad yours worked out, looks amazing! -

Fun coincidence: I received this kit as a gift 15-16 years ago when I was a teenager. I was too intimidated then by the two tone paint job so I never even opened the kit. Shortly after I completely gave up modeling, until last year. Last night I was bored and finally opened the wrapper and took a look at it. And here you’ve finished the very kit a week and a half ago. I’m still intimidated by it haha! I’ll build it eventually once I get a couple two-tones under my belt. Yours looks great! -
Here’s my build of the recently released AMT ‘78 VW GTI. Since this kit is molded in three colors (and since it’s too cold out to safely spray paint) I decided to see how far I could take it with just some Future and hand detail paint. It came out ok, definitely not an award winner ?. The yellow plastic is thin and slightly translucent so the color isn’t consistent. If I did it again I’d try some yellow craft paint inside the body shell first. Part fit and detail isn’t great but considering the age of the mold it’s acceptable. It’s WAY better than AMT’s ‘77 Pinto. I don’t think anyone in their right mind would have stuck fake wood on a 1:1 GTI, even in the ‘70s, but it’s a fun look for a model! Anyways this was an enjoyable quick build overall.

Here’s my McLaren 570S from Revell Germany. This kit was more of a challenge than I expected with tons of tiny parts and decals. The fit was pretty good but final assembly was very finicky to get it all to line up correctly. As I read from other builders here, the carbon fiber decals did not want to cooperate so I left them off after the roof decal tore. Also, my kit was missing a headlight lense despite it being a new, sealed kit so I left the other off. RofG is sending me a free replacement part but it will take weeks; I’ll add them on when I get it. Body is the bare molded-in-color plastic with two coats of Future, with Tamiya XF-56 metallic gray as the accent and wheel color. Brake calipers and valve covers are X-12 gold leaf. Interior is flat black Krylon with the bare gray plastic for the seats. Despite the challenges it was a fun build and I’m happy with my results!

Thanks! The top finish is simply Tamiya XF flat acrylic airbrushed on, over a light coat of Tamiya fine gray primer.

Thank you! Yes the up-top came with the kit. It also came with the parade boot if you want to display it top-down.

Thanks! For the “cheese graters,” I painted them body color first, and then I used a silver gel pen in each of the slots. Once that dried, I went back over the red sections with a red gel pen.

Thanks everyone!!

Here are my two builds from the beginning and end of the long running third generation Mustang Fox Body. MPC’s 1979 Mustang Turbo Hatchback and Monogram’s 1992 Mustang GT Convertible. Enjoy!

Here’s my first for 2021, a ‘79 Mustang Turbo Hatch. It’s from MPC’s first issue of the Fox Body, the Mustang Turbo Cobra kit. It took several attempts to score this kit from eBay... and I spent way too much for it ? but I am ecstatic to have an early Fox Body in my collection! The fit and detail on this kit is really nice, with only some minor trimming to get the body to mate the chassis properly. Unfortunately, the original Cobra decals were in poor condition so I just built it as the regular Turbo trim. It’s painted Tamiya X-7 red with XF-55 deck tan for the interior, and two coats of Future on the body. I’m very pleased with this one, hopefully I did this rare kit some justice!

Sir, this website is for model cars, not real ones. ? Stunning work!

Thanks everyone!!

Oh and the paint is Tamiya X-8 Lemon yellow. I primered the red plastic in black first, followed by grey primer, and then the yellow.

Here’s my Monogram Ferrari 308! It was an early release, sealed, bagged no-box kit from eBay, molded in red. It’s a curbside kit but it goes together great and has some decent detail. This was my first attempt at the Bare-Metal-Foil-before-you-paint-it technique for the emblems, and it didn’t come out great for the deck lid Ferrari script or the side Pininfarina badges. I think I’m still laying my paint on way too thick, so there wasn’t much of a raised script left to strip the paint back off. Anyways, I think it turned out well enough for my shelf, and lessons learned for the next one!

Sorry just now saw your question. It's Tamiya XF8 Flat Blue. It looks different depending on your lighting but it's a standard medium blue. On the real car, the top is more of a navy blue and the interior is a lighter medium blue.

My latest build, a 1990 Eunos Roadster by Tamiya. I used to own a Mariner Blue ‘90 Miata so I had to paint this one blue too! It’s Krylon Colormaxx gloss “True Blue.” The finish has more orange peel than I’d like, but I don’t have the patience for wet sanding and polishing ? It’s good enough for my shelf! Not much else to say really, this is a pretty simple curbside kit that goes together nice and is a quick and easy build.

Here is my ‘82 custom Dodge Van! It’s the re-released “Bad Company” kit from MPC, with my own mix on the decals. The black flaming horse decals came from the MPC Pinto Pony Express re-issue, and the sunset flaming horse came from the recent release AMT ‘66 Mustang coupe kit. I thought the wizard decals in the kit looked goofy so I swapped in those horse flame decals. I think they look like they belong together! I painted the body in Tamiya X-12 Gold Leaf, and the interior in XF-7 flat red, with Future on the seats, dash and walls. This was my first time using Future floor polish and I am definitely a convert! The body paint really pops with three thin coats of future. FYI, it’s now called “Pledge Revive It Floor Gloss Original” - it took me a while to find the current name and I had to order it from Amazon. The interior is mostly box stock, but I added a simple mini fridge and 32” flat screen tv that I modeled up in CAD and had my brother 3D print for me. The TV wall mount is just a cut piece of scrap sprue. Overall this kit went together pretty well, but it took some finessing to get the interior tub and chassis to seat properly in the body. The large glass roof panel is definitely supposed to be glued in from the inside, but it then won’t fit with the cab partition panel in place. I left it removable and just set it in from the outside. I wanted to use the chrome side exit exhaust pipes, but there doesn’t seem to be a way to actually attach them to the body or frame without doing custom fab. I didn’t realize this until final assembly so I won’t bother adding an exhaust. This kit’s eye candy is up top anyway, no one is ever going to look underneath! I probably should have left the engine out too since you can’t really see it. This is definitely the wildest looking kit I’ve ever done, and I had a blast doing it. I grew up well after the custom van scene died out, but it definitely needs to make a comeback!

Awesome! Where did you get this kit? Is it a custom resin kit?
-
Yeah it came with the kit’s decal sheet! I made sure to use it.

Thanks! I do have the Revell ‘90 lx coupe drag kit and it does have the stock parts. But I want to build that one as a stock coupe so it was spared from the chopping block! And my girlfriend gets on to me for buying too many kits as it is, she would lose it if I started buying duplicates ?
