  1. What's wrong with redundancy? What's wrong with redundancy? You should post it here too! (TIP- it's FREE!)
  2. CURT! That's fantastic! That looks great! I have always wanted to build that. Don't know if I will. I like the way you went about it with the aftermarket parts. Maybe I'll start by finding those parts. Support the hobby- put it on a contest table!
  3. The car that influenced me toward the post-teen years, when I tried again at model building, had to be my dad’s Corvairs. His first ‘vair was a 1960 more-door with that “flying buttress†roof. I have a vague memory of being small enough to stand up, holding on to the front seat so I could watch dad drive and see where we were going! I also recall that car stranding our family in a supermarket parking lot with mechanical issues. Second ‘vair was a ’63 Monza Convertible. Kool memories (literally) of dad and I taking home a Christmas tree in the back seat with the top down. After that, dad switched to a ’63 Impala, but I think he always had a soft spot for the Corvair. I eventually adopted dad’s “sicknessâ€, and have owned a 1965 Monza more-door with the so-so 110 HP, a ’61 parts car that I foolishly thought I could fix up, a 1963 Spyder that just had a mechanical rebuild, and finally again a ’63 Greenbrier Van that once again, I foolishly thought I could fix up. In the late eighties, I started hunting for a model of my 1965 Monza. That’s how I found out about the “hobbyâ€, Scale Auto Enthusiast, pricey old kits, and… the rest is history.
  4. That is a big time problem when I make something from scratch! Of course it's not a real issue for me, as I am not a "full detail guy"!
  5. First, welcome to our zoo! For filler (many refer to it as putty), you could start out with Squadron green, or white putty. This is sold at any good hobby shop. I believe it is lacquer base. There is nothing to mix, but you do need to work quick, as it will "skin" in 5 to 10 seconds. It cannot be any thicker than maybe 1/32" thick, some may say even thinner. It cures by air-drying. If you think you may need to do filling time and again, go with a two-part catalyzed putty. This would be found in an automotive parts store in the auto-body section. It's far more expensive too. The big benefit of two-part putty is, unlike the lacquer based stuff, the two-part dries by chemical reaction. In ten minutes after application, it's cured and ready for sanding. The filler is mixed in equal parts with the hardener. That DOESN'T mean if you scoop out a one-inch lump of filler, go and squeeze a one-inch lump of hardener! No! You use equal parts, relative to the container size! So if you were to mix, say, 1/20th of the container of filler, you squeeze out 1/20th of the tube of hardener. And you should have about a 4-minute working time.
  6. One thing you may want to keep in mind as you tape those valuable decals to the window glass... Condensation! Condensation on the window glass can destroy your decals! I have never tried the window sunlight trick before, but maybe sealing them in a plastic "Zip-Loc" bag may protect them?
  7. Good timing! I just answered this Q for someone! Check this out for a diagramed how-to! http://www.modelcarsmag.com/forums/index.php?showtopic=23769
  8. Looks "Wickid!" Glad I could help with the pics.
  9. Actually, the reason the top-tier builders has been somewhat non-existant this summer, is they have been "cocooning" for most of the summer. Now with fall approaching, they are starting to "come out of their shells" so to speak. I think we will be hearing more from them soon.
  10. Well someone apparently wants to save at least one Pontiac line alive! It won't be under the Pontiac name however. It seems that DeLorean Motor Company is currently a brand without a new car. The Wilmington, Delaware Solstice plant is a factory without a car to build. So DMC is showing interest in building the Solstice with a "few" tweaks. Wonder what the seats will be stuffed with? Sorry, JZD!
  11. Brian, I'll try. But first, I want to suggest that on a '57 Chevy, it would be prototypical to 'tub' the rear, rather than do flares. Maybe you can see something in these pics I took of a Mustang TransAm that needs to be finished. This design wheel flare will need filler to complete the effect. I used aluminum printing plate, and solder glued to the edge to form the lip. I did these on cardboard, or "boxboard" before cutting metal.
  12. NOW... go back to this hobby board, and open up a new post or reply. Then... I hope that helps. MAKE SURE there are NO blank spots! To see if it works BEFORE you post, use the PREVIEW button!
  13. TerrY- What an amazing little car the "first" Porsche is! A few more pics of your build would be nice!
  14. Thanks for the pics, Tom! Anyone have any info on what vehicle this is? Was? It sure is different!
  15. Especially animation depicting blood and violence. We get enough of that garbage on the boob tube (family values!) I couldn't care less which fast-food clown it is, we don't need to see graphic images of blood splatters etc. Someone else mentioned they thought it was done to seek attention... I agree wholehartedly.
  16. Thanks for the kind words! Wish I could take better quality photos at contests! At this show, I set the white balance to "indoor". I'm not sure it mattered. I have an "antique" Sony Mavica 200. Also noticed some focus issues. Kinda like me in real life! If I use a flash, even set at low, the photo looks swamped with light. These pics have no flash. I wish I could have a portable (attached to camera) source of diffused light, just enough to lighten up my pics. I'm no "tech" type, and photography prooves it!
  17. Good show by Classic Plastic! http://public.fotki.com/JCole/model_car_sh...c-plastic-2009/ Just under 150 pics. Next years show, September 19th!
  18. Nice pics! Looks sinister at night! These photos were on another automotive web site. The builder spent $1 million and 3 1/2 years building his Batmobile (can we say "Batmobile" here?)
  19. I also wish to throw my hat into the ring on this subject. Bill Stillwagon is one of the nicest, friendliest guy you will likely ever meet. This Yankee gives a nod to the consummate Southern Gentlemen. Photo by Don Banes
  20. Oh. Of course they don't. I'll just crawl under this ant and exit stage left....
  21. MY PAYCHECK! Yes, it's a joke. No, I'm not laughing either.
  22. Not anymore! The Saturn brand just left port for the last time!
  23. Well I guess I screwed that one up royally, huh? I guess I moved it to my "1:1 Celebrity Rides" file. Let's try this again... This car is/was going across an auction block, I guess that is the source. A few more pics here: http://public.fotki.com/JCole/11_celebrity_rides/page23.html
  24. The comments on AMT's '67 Impala roof are correct. Here is a cropped photo of the kit's roof... And here is my friends '65 Hardtop. The sheetmetal for the roof is the same for the '67 Impala. The sides of the roof on the 1:1 form two distinct angles, where AMT's '67 body is a long sweeping bend, forming at the rear pillar leaving a too narrow post. I hold little hope of this being corrected. I hope they do fix it, of course.
  25. I don't know if I would call this a "Scam", as much as I think it's a folly of wishful thinking. Desiring for Pontiac to come back is not a legitimate reason to persue a means to that end.
