I have wheel trouble
Jon Cole replied to Greg Cullinan's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
Welcome to the show! Having a well supplied workbench is a good thing to have. You want to check out the various glues other than 'model cement', and consider having some various plastic and metal tubes, rods, and wires. Below is a pic of some of my stash. The "piano" wire I tagged for the drill bit number tto use. I'm always using that. Plus there is aluminum, brass, and plastic rod. All those items can be handy when fastening wheels, etc. You will need a 'jewelers drill bit' set from #60 to #80, and like the plastic sheet and rods, and wires, they can be found at any well stocked hobby shop. Look for brands like K&S for metal supplies, for plastic look for Evergreen, or Plastruct. Good luck! Keep us posted. -
Am I missing something?
Jon Cole replied to Dave Wood's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
I've got issue #142 right here on my desk. Tell your mailman to buy his/her own! -
What Aaron says! Of those three, I have bought from Micro-Mark. They're good. The hobby is disappearing from the local shopping plazas and store fronts. We now live in the internet age. Sooo... time to get a credit card, buy on-line, and rack up the debt like the rest of us!!!

Do you ever get the feeling?
Jon Cole replied to Custom Hearse's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
Yeah, I understand, sometimes it feels that way. BUT, if you know it doesn't seem right, than chances are it's just the way this "internet" is. It's not you... and it's not us. It's just the way it is. What I do is just keep on posting. Odds are, someone is reading it! And if not, well, it wouldn't be the first time I was found bouncing off the walls, talking to myself! Also, I've noticed that nothing is more certain to get a response, than posting pics of a model you just built! In my case, I finish about two a year on average. Translated... I get "recognized" about twice a year! LoL! It's all good. No matter what, the sun will still rise tomorrow. Just keep on smilin', and keep on postin'! -
Jeff: If you have a home printer, you can print the plate out yourself. You just paste the photo of the plate in a Word program, or an art program, and shrink it down until the plate is 7/16" long. My program has a ruler across the top of the screen, and that does help. Always do a test print before you make the final print on high-quality photo paper. I suspect you could do the inspection sticker the same way. You won't have hi-resolution quality, but it's a lot cheaper than paying for printing. Your quality may vary. If you can figure out how to size it down to 7/16, you have a scale plate! And that will be more accurate sized than some AMT plate decals from a few years back! Here is one I made:

If anyone would like reference photos of Dodge Challengers, feel free to check out and help yourself to my Fotki photos. I have been working on a late model Mopar kit, and have collected pics of everything I could find, including engine, drivetrain, and interiors. I have R/T's SRT8's, Hurst Editions, and more. I guess I'm a bit compulsive on finding out where each hose & wire goes to. Here's the link, all pics in chronological order: http://public.fotki.com/JCole/11_mopar-1/1...dge-challenger/

Q about acrylic paint
Jon Cole replied to Jon Cole's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
Thanks, Chris. That is what I'll try. -
Rather than hijack Skitt's post on his cool Corvair van, I thought I would show this resin cast separately. I don't recall the caster, which is a good thing, considering how much work it will need. But, at least it is unique, and is workable. I found it on the big auction site several years ago. Note the front in the above pic. The nose should be flat from one side to the other. That's but one thing of several that I will fix. At least it will be a challenge. Here is a pic of myself around 1986 standing in where the flat six used to be on my '62 Corvair Greenbriar (window) Van.

Q about acrylic paint
Jon Cole replied to Jon Cole's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
Thanks, RJ! I'm heading out to The Olive Garden for my b-day as soon as the Mrs. gets home from work. As for acrylic paint, I am trying to find out if I should use water, or IsoAlcohol to thin it. I have the 91% stuff, maybe some 70% as well, not sure, I need to look around here. I have very little experience airbrushing acrylic. Any help and advice is appreciated. -
Need your advice! I want to airbrush some Model Master Acryl bottle paint. What do I thin it with? And... by how much? Thanks!

Coverage of 2009 Meadowbrook Concours
Jon Cole replied to tim boyd's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
Nice coverage, Tim! Thank you for giving us the opportunity to see Meadowbrook Concours! Is it true what I have heard... that even for spectators, the entrance fee is several hundreds of dollars? That would be out of my budget! But the cars... -
Paint color identification
Jon Cole replied to loudcherokee's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
Take the remaining piece to an automotive jobber (such as an auto parts store that sells paints to the auto body shop) and ask if they can do a color scan on it. They may first use a wax cleaner on it, then scan the surface. The computer will formulate the mixing code. -
Dave; I just finished reading the article in MCM on your RetroVette, saying "impressive" is an understatement! Harry's design, and your interpetation go together like coffee & cream! The real eye popper tho, is how much work you put into those seats and other interior components. If anyone is not aware, get the magazine! This ride has real animal hide! Take that, PETA!

Money for Models???
Jon Cole replied to Harry P.'s topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
The "cash incentive" is one question I am asked most by people who are not in, or understand our hobby. Whhen I mention that it is a contest I am going to, they always say "Can you win money?" I have never been to a contest where cash is the bait. I am sure there are some, but that to me is no more of an incentive than the hope of placing, ir maybe even winning a trophy. -
Oh, quite real! Not too many photos out there afaik, there is also a side view somewhere...

Another fine Mustang Jeff! The Twister Pkg. is new to me! I like your 'signature' opening features too. If you're ever on the left side of the Granite State, give me a call!

Is it enamel over acrylic, or vice versa?
Jon Cole replied to Jon Cole's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
Thanks for the imput! -
I am doing some detail painting, and I have many different bottle paints. I used to have mostly MM enamel, but now I have almost as many bottles of acrylic model paint. Is there any prob using acrylic over enamel, or... enamel over acrylic? Not only reaction, but adhesion and coverage. This is in reference to brushing. Thanks.
