2021 AMG GT Black Series-An Adventure in 3D Printing
SickBoy replied to Jhedir6's topic in WIP: Model Cars
Very cool David, I have stepped in to 3d printing recently as well, was maybe slightly over confident in my ability to design my own parts, I have the software and everything as well just not the experience, I will get there....someday! I have found myself buying files also, lots of good stuff out there both paid and free, you are much more ambitious than I have been, mostly small parts but have been pondering printing a full body. I'm interested and will follow along with your progress. Thanks for letting us join for the ride -
Thanks guys, having a great time here already and always having a great time building!

Thank you Thank you, believe it or not all the photos were taken with my phones camera, not the newest phone either! Thank you, it was one of my favorite parts to build and detail.

Been working on an Aoshima Liberty Walk Hakosuka Works Nissan Skyline GT-R. I have close to the full series of these cars, I'm a huge fan of old Japanese cars, especially Nissans/Datsuns(my grandfather used to be a Datsun car salesman) The over the top look of the wide over fenders and super low stance kinda speak to me, its not a look for everyone but I personally love it. I didn't get any pics from the very start but the body comes pre-cut in the wheel arches to fit the over fenders and what will be very wide wheels and tires. The over fenders fit very nicely as is to be expected from the Japanese kits. After sanding the mold lines (very few to speak of) and going over the panel lines I sanded the whole body with 1500 grit Tamiya sanding sponges, two coats of Mr.Surfacer 1500 grey, two mist coats of Tamiya TS-24 Purple, followed by two wet coats of TS-24, two mist coats of Tamiya clear and two wet coats of Tamiya clear. I still need to wet sand and polish before painting the window mouldings. I'm going for an OOB box build as the models are faithful recreations of the real cars and in my opinion Liberty Walk already did a great job modifying the car. I am doing some work on the interior and wheels today, will have an update in a day or so. Thanks for looking

Looking really good, interior is very nice, great work on the console. That engine! I built a version of this kit years ago, broke to pieces during several moves but think I have some surviving pieces in my parts box.

Wow, simple, clean, elegant yet mean, I love it.

Looking good, I like it without the chrome side trim. Painting the small emblems always makes me nervous, I have pretty good luck dipping a fine tipped swab in the chrome paint, wipe any excess lightly on a paper towel (this is a balancing act as both the swab and towel want to keep the paint for themselves) and then i float the swab over the raised emblem, repeat until desired effect is acheived. If you used a lacquer paint and/or clear coat and are using an acrylic for the emblem any slips can usually be wiped off pretty quickly and easily.

Wow, the engine details are something else, great work. I love the look you got on the exhaust header, looks like they've been a little warm once or twice!

Great job David, super clean. Of all the Batmobiles this is still my favorite.

Very nice Helmut, being a Chrysler auto technician for near 25 years I have grown to love this car and its history. You have done it justice, great job. I love the color, I have a similar color that I got from work, its Dodges Sinammon Stik, little darker but simiar. I was going to use it on a Toyota Hilux but now I might use it on a big body classic. Thanks for sharing with us.

This is beautiful, what a cool car and build, great job!

It was not an easy kit at all. The destructions, I mean instructions were very vague in some spots, most importantly as to the exact location of the firewall in the body. This is a crucial step as the rest of the body panels rely on its position, especially in regards to the final fitment of the hood. It took lots of test fitting of almost the entire chassis and body to get it just right, I ended up having to trim the very oversized locating ledge for the firewall on the underside of the cowl to almost a nub before it fit. Even after lots of test fitting the body still gave me a hard time going all the way over the rear wheels with the lowered suspension. It was almost like the body wasn't wide enough at that point of the wheel well. A little sanding of the upper edge of the wheel skirts and some really colorful language made it go! So, no it wasn't just you, it was a tough kit. I have the matching 47 Coupe in my stash, there are a few things I will do differently!

Thank you, thank you! All of you are too kind. Thanks to everyone who has looked and replied, i appreciate all the kind words.

These are a few of builds since the start of the year. Hope you enjoy, let me know if you want to see more of any of them. As you can see my taste is pretty diverse, I mostly enjoy muscle cars and JDM cars (I know, apples and bananas!) We have here, in order a 71 Hemi Cuda from Revell in Testors Sublime Green,a Tamiya Nissan Skyline R34 Vspec airbrushed in decanted Tamiya TS-50 Blue Mica, MPC Tiki Trike painted in Alclad Candy Golden Yellow, Galaxie Ltd. 47 Chevy Aerosedan painted in Tamiya TS-7 Racing White and Tamiya TS-87 Titanium Gold and last is an Aoshima Honda Monkey Z50 airbrushed in decanted Tamiya TS-14 Gloss Black. Thanks for looking

This is a 1947 Chevrolet Aerosedan by Galaxie Ltd. that I finished in April for a local show. It was my first time entering a contest/show, didnt do as well as I had hoped but still had a great time and learned a lot. The build probably has close to 100 hours in to it, built mostly box stock with a few extras to the most perfect state I could accomplish. The body was painted in Tamiya TS-7 Racing White and Tamiya TS-87 Titanium Gold, topped off with Tamiya TS-13 Clear, wet sanded and polished. All the window trim and body side trim was done in BMF, this was actually my first time using BMF so I was pleased with the results. The side view mirrors and spot lights required locating and drilling the holes in the A-pillars, the mirrors had the chrome stripped due to some mold lines on the face of the mirror, sanded smooth and re-finished in Alclad Chrome. The windshield visor was also stripped of the chrome, sanded smooth (the outer portions had an almost diamond plate texture to them) and painted in TS-87 and Alclad Chrome. The interior was done in a custom mix of some Tamiya X series acrylics and Vallejo acrylics all airbrushed and the trim details hand painted. The carpet was done in Kens Kustom FuzzyFur. All of the dash knobs and door handles were done with Tamiya clear orange over gloss white. The dash decals gave me a hard time as you can see i tore two of them. I cut the front windows out and then dipped the glass in Pledge Revive (Future) as an experiment and it worked quite well to hide some of the weird mold lines and scuffs that were in the glass. The engine was painted in Duplicolor engine paint DE 1611 New Ford Gray from the auto parts store (was the closest match I could find) built as a stock engine, added plug wires and even routed them in the correct firing order from all the references I found. The suspension was lowered as much as possible from the options in the box (kit has standard or lowered options) and then I shaved the frame slightly in the rear to clearance the axle tubes and try to get the frame a little closer to the ground. I was going for a little bit lower stance than what I ended up with but maybe next time ( I have the matching Galaxie Ltd. 47 Coupe in my stash). The white walls for the tires were done in Tamiya White Fine Surface primer, I was happy with the sheen and texture it provided so I went with it. The center caps and the other exterior chrome trim were given a light blackwash to bring out the details and the door panel lines were blackwashed as well (ended up darker than I hoped, such a stark contrast against the white). Anyhow, Thanks for reading and looking, hope you enjoy looking as much as I did building, Im pretty proud of this one, I consider it my best work to date, not to shabby for my fourth build after a good twenty year break. Thanks again!

Ordering from Hobbylinc.com
SickBoy replied to plasticprime's topic in Model Building Questions and Answers
Hobbylinc is great! Good prices, shipping is reasonable. They do take a few days longer than some others but shipment always arrives when they say it will and have always been correct. Megahobby has very fast shipping times, usually same or next day and good selection. Have used both with great success -
I know its too late now and of no help with your current troubles but what I have been doing with each new kit I open is scan the decal sheet in to your PC ,that way is disaster happens I have a backup to either reprint them my self or have someone print a copy for me. Waterslide decal paper is pretty reasonably priced and most of us already have a printer on hand. Just my 2 cents

Thinking about coming back into it...
SickBoy replied to FEENIX's topic in Welcome! Introduce Yourself
Don't think about, just do it, you wont regret it, I sure haven't. As others here said, very similar story here, although my son didnt take to it like I hoped, I'm still working on him! And yes, what I used to see with my bare eyes now takes readers or even more! Welcome aboard from other new guy here -
Hey guys, Long time model builder, have been building models since I was a kid, took a long time off from the hobby, cars, girls, marriage, life, kids all made me forget how much I loved getting lost in a box of styrene. Fast forward to November of last year and my son asked for a model to build together for Christmas. I ventured to our local hobby shop and was amazed at how much the hobby had changed for the better. More than one kit came home with me that day and I have dove head first back in to my passion. I have finished 5 builds since then with work always in progress. I have taken up airbrushing and 3d printing, working on some 3d designing and am about to jump in to some resin casting and aluminum parts. I build things with tires and engines, mostly all cars and motorcycles, every now and again a plane or ship might be on the bench. Cars come natural to me as I'm an auto tech by trade, kinda eclectic in my car tastes, love old muscle and JDM style builds. Lots of great builds and knowledge here, eager to build some friendships here, hopefully we see a lot more of each other in the near future. Thanks for reading and for having me here. Will post some pics of my builds soon

There will be a new owner of VCG Resins soon. The business will be moved to Colorado in July and should be up and running by August.
