Metalflake paints for model cars?
sak replied to Dave Ambrose's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
Some might dispute this but the touch up cans meant for full size vehicles make the best metalflake for model cars, that is if you want it to look to scale. Testors has metalflake paints in little jars and cans but I don't think it looks right on something small. Looks better on a bike helmet. -
That motor turned out pretty badass. Did you make those pulleys yourself? Jeff

Looks awesome !!! Might want to remove those pieces. Only draws attention to that area rather than hiding it. I don't think it will look bad at all without them.

So duplicolor is a form of acrylic lacquer? Could acetone be used in place of lacquer thinner. I find it dissolves the paint better than lacquer thinner and dries much faster as well. At least with duplicolors. Or is the type of thinner a very importment part of this method? It seems to me, this method is very similar to that used by those who airbrush nailpolish. Your method makes sense to me. Thinning the paint this way will help the paint atomize better no? And at that low pressure, the air flow from the airbrush is not pushing the paint around as its drying. I suppose that explains hoe alcad goes on so smoothly.

By "acrylic lacquer", you are referring to duplicolor cans? And what does low temp lacquer thinner mean? Does it relate to the time it takes to dry?

Was wondering what kind of epoxy glue is the best and are they all two part style. And also what consistency is it when mixed. How do you apply it? with a brush or is it thicker than that? Thanks Jeff

1973 plymouth. Recently dismantled the suspension and rebuilt it using ply bushings. Changed the backspacing of the rally wheels to 3.75 with 245 60 15s so it fills the wheel openings alot more.Just now needs an alignment. Too late this year. But first thing next spring. -
I am not so sure those things on the turbos are meant to be aircleaners. Too be effective, I would think that setup would require some kinds of ram air system or airducts similar to the olds 442s. But regardless, I think there is nothing wrong with that monogram camaro. I never noticed the body proportions when I built it. It may not be accurate, but it still has badass styling. If anything, people should be hating on that lacklustre interior with its barely visible details. I think that one did not even have a backseat. But the shell is strong plastic with crisp detailing. And like others have said, came with some cool parts. Doesn't this one come with a b&m style ratchet shifter? And those wheels on the white side of the car totally fit this car I think. Well done so far.

My only gripe with this car is that it is not jet black. But even still I think it looks miraculous. Well done.

Ok this is waaay too complicated. And I have looked into it and it seems quite expensive as well. So is basecoat a form of urethane or something different?

That is gonna be some sweet ride. Hard to believe it is a Toyota but I love those early seventies celicas. Hardtop cupe with chrome bumpers. Love to own one of those one day. You know what would be interesting in that model. A V8 from those lexus.

I have a little jar of the brush on superglue, and was wanting to use my own fine tipped brush. Is there a way to clean the brushes with something before the glue cures? Yhanks Jeff

Terrific job, get my vote for model of the year, thats's for sure. Is that a GSP in the center console? So cool. jeff

Small update. Installed the "carpet". And finished the dash/ steering colunm. But I have trouble with the shape of these chevelles dashboards. Soon the interior can be assembled. And the body hopefully be primed this weekend.

I think I will give urethane paint a try, but I need to know the basics. For example, what to thin it with, is it happy over testors enamels or dupli-color or tamiya based paints. Thanks Jeff

AMT 71 Duster quarter windows
sak replied to spkgibson's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
As an owner of a duster. I must also say thats my only problem with it ,styling wise. And someday plan to hardtop it, even if it means having non functional quarter windows. I think the novas could also benefit from this too. A quick photoshop of my car as a hardtop. In fact I would even go so far as to say that Chrysler might have intended it to be a hartop at one time, as that pillar is only a thin peice of sheetmetal tack welded on. I can't see it adding much structual integrity to the design. I would be very curious to see a duster concept model, if one does exist. Jeff -
Thought I would update my WIp a little. Only have a few hours a week to work on these things.

Personally , I think those taillights should have stayed in the box, but overall, its spot on !!! Beautifull

Wow, that is absolutely gorgeous. I would have looked at that engine bay and made it as a curbside with all that molded in detail, but you make it look awesome. Well done. Jeff
