  1. And the forum’s done too... “Dear Enthusiasts, As we incorporate scale-car modeling content more fully into FineScale Modeler, we have made the decision to shut down the Scale Auto website and Forum on Friday, October 9. Scale Auto subscribers will have access to subscriber-only content on FineScale.com, where you will find car, truck, and motorcycle kit reviews, along with how-to guides and building advice, and a continually growing selection of scale-car modeling stories. We invite you to sign up for the FineScale Modeler Forum where you can discuss your models and share your experiences. Thank you for supporting Scale Auto over the years, and I hope to see you over at FineScale Modeler. Regards, Tim Kidwell, editor”
  2. Ohh, interesting - I haven’t tried that combination. Do you have any pics of anything you’ve painted with this pairing? I’d love to see if you do!
  3. Oh, this is a great idea - looks cool already! The roof will be the toughest bit it looks like...but it's gonna be killer! I'll be watching!
  4. Well, this completely implausible hypothetical scenario is about as implausible as most of us here MANAGING to build a kit with only what’s in the box so I guess we can bend the rules a little ? I keep trying to follow those instructions but MANNN the temptation to change just those couple of things is strong ?
  5. I was at the bench probably 7 hours today - and by the time I was done I thought “what did I even accomplish today?!” I mean, I did STUFF - I prepped some parts, primed some parts, painted some parts, did some washes, found some decals I was looking for, did some research, glued some little parts to some other little parts...but nothing worth photographing and sharing for the most part. Days like that are weird - worked on a project all day long but didn’t achieve anything much of note ?‍♂️ Cut a new firewall out for my T that I’m building - that was the only thing I did today that was notable enough where I took a photo ?
  6. Oh man, good choice with that Tamiya pearl - looks amazing!
  7. Any chance of some more details on where the show is, and the date?
  8. Weathering on the car aside - that base is really impressive! Nice job on that too!
  9. Thanks buddy! I’ll check that out next time I visit the HL by us - always pleased to find some interesting supplies to pick up! Thanks buddy! A little update, as I’m replying anyway... Shot the frame and the dash in matching pearl white; And shot a bunch of the ‘metal’ parts: Lately, I’ve been enjoying using Duplicolor silver as a base - as you can see from the block above it gives a decent bright aluminum shade right out of the can, but you can give it a light mist of something like Vallejo steel and give a polished metal look in the flavor of your choice. For example, I wanted a polished steel kind of look for the pan; And a variation on that for the rear axle assembly: I’ve used some washes of watercolor ink to bring out the detail in these parts a little, but the combination of the two paints gives a decent realistic bare-metal type of finish I think. I’ll add a very light dry-brush of silver to both of these before I’m done, but I’m pleased with the general effect. I’m going for a “real old but cared for” kind of finish to the metal parts - a little natural ageing in terms of color but without a bunch of gunk and rust and stuff on them. Meanwhile, I read a thread on one of the Model T sites about a guy who’s making aluminum blocks for 1:1 Ts, and I thought that would be a cool thing to replicate, so I’ll be using the Rustoleum silver to give a shiny-but-not-chrome-y finish to the block on this one - with a darker steel tone for the trans: Still some parts to pick out on this, obviously, with some different colors but more on that tomorrow!
  10. I like this stuff: Does a very acceptable polished aluminum kind of shade to my eyes - bright and chrome-y looking with no flake-y look to it:
  11. Photobunket ruined the photos but this is a good one...
  12. Ohh, I never knew they sold such a thing - I’ll check that out! Do you know who makes it? Is it a jewelry-section thing? It would be cool for spreader bars maybe on the front and rear of a frame! Tiny update - cleaned up the flames, shot some clear! Can’t wait to see it in the daylight - the pearl white especially looks really sparkly under some gloss! More progress tomorrow hopefully!
  13. Thanks fellas! Got some paint on the body - first up, Wicked Colors pearl white: Then, after a coat of clear to protect the base color, I designed some vertical flames: Then cut and applied masks: Then a coat of candy yellow: Then, some candy orange: And then peel back the masks and hope ? Came out pretty cool I think - something a little different! I’ll do a little clean-up with thinners once the paint has set up a little bit here and then bury it all in some clear. More soon!
  14. Bet a production company’s setting up to film something - whenever there would be a bunch of cool cars parked in the garage near me the pink or yellow filming signs would appear not too long after and the bossy interns would start yelling at passers-by for walking on their set
  15. Huh, I never saw those before - cool!! I want one! Thanks for the info!
  16. Slightly (completely) off topic - I like your red toolbox with the drawers in!
  17. Ohh cool!! One of my favorite builders building a build inspired by one of my other favorite builders! ? I’ll be watching!
  18. This is looking great - I like the interior color! Those stripes on the side of the 1:1 are kinda odd to me - it looks like they forgot to add the pieces that continue onto the rear doors Regardless - cool build so far!
  19. My wife and I were playing a game when we were road-tripping cross-country trying to decide which state we would choose if we could only eat the food that that state is famous for producing. Im not a corn fan, so Indiana was out (although here I am in Indiana anyway ?) - we couldn’t decide between Idaho or Wisconsin in the end... I guess Idaho would be the sensible choice, but cheese IS delicious ?
  20. That bike still looks about the same today - tonnes of cool little details and stuff to notice! Me either - I’d be only slightly more inclined to use them if they were almost completely hidden from view under some big swooping fenders, but even then I still wouldn’t like them much ? Tiny update today - got the body smoothed out and ready for some primer...been having the worst luck with Rusto primer lately so I decanted yet another clogged can so I could airbrush it. I can’t figure out how this stuff is like water and SUPER thin yet the cans still manage to clog. Regardless, got a first coat of primer down - I’m excited to get some color on this thing this week! ?
  21. Two of ‘em! Don’t need it, but someday I’m sure I will ?
  22. Only if I don’t value an hour of my time very highly ?? The fun of the hunt makes it worth it though, I guess - the Goodwill by me is a place I check for kits fairly regularly and the only thing I found so far was some styrene sheet this week...but it’s fun to keep checking! ?
  23. I get it! I’ve been there! I’m kinda joking but kinda not...if you’re trying to match the stance of a 1:1 with similar size wheels and tires, just in scale, you may well run into difficulties if the body is a scale inch and a half thick around the arches and above the tops of the tires...they obviously can’t make styrene a scale metal thickness so sometimes a little ‘cheat’ is necessary
  24. Man, I get twitchy when I see kits for $30 ?
  25. That’s a nice score Mike, especially if you didn’t pay a lot for it! I’ve been watching for one of those myself, but they usually go for fairly decent amounts of money
