Exactly. This has nothing to do with paint brands, and everything to do with incompatibility of paint types. If the primer on this model was painted over with any other brand of enamel, there would likely have been no problems. Similarly, if Rustoleum made a lacquer paint, and it was applied over Rustoleum enamel primer, this reaction would likely occur. There is absolutely nothing wrong with mixing brands. Many of us do it all the time with excellent results. It is perfectly acceptable to do as long as one has a basic understanding of the different paint types, which, for hobby purposes, is not at all complicated (this statement ignores the introduction of two-part or 2K paints, which I won't comment on except to say, best just to avoid it altogether for hobby use). For example, Duplicolor primer, covered with Tamiya lacquer thinned with Mr Color levelling thinner, and cleared with Alclad works great. The key is that they are all lacquer compatible, and the combination was tested beforehand. Once a little experience is gained, one can move forward with confidence. As Steve mentioned, a newby who finds himself confused by all this paint stuff and 'plays it safe' by selecting all Tamiya products may find he has a frustrating and discouraging mess on his hands, since Tamiya markets acrylics, enamels, and two types of lacquer paints. A potential quagmire of incompatibility. It is important to understand the basic issues (they are not difficult), and not just blindly choose products because they are the same brand. Additionally, instructing others to 'stick to one brand' stifles experimentation, which is a fun and interesting aspect of our hobby, and has led to some excellent discoveries over the years that many of us now take advantage of. The key is to test before committing to a kit. Also, screwing up the paint on a kit is not the 'end of the world' event that some people make it out to be. Just chalk it up to experience, strip it and move on.

It looks like the classic reaction when painting lacquer over enamel. I am guessing the Rustoleum primer is enamel. Curious it didn't happen to the rest of the body.

I have a '55 Panel gluebomb, just checked but the glass is welded in. I can confirm though, that the glass is the same for the pickup and the panel.

I just returned from vacation to find the Tamiya news. I was most concerned about the primer, so I immediately trotted off to the LHS to stock up. The proprietor tells me the ban does not include primer. Not much on the shelf because people are panic buying anyway (as I did), but assures me primer is not included, and he has more on the way. I've not read this elsewhere, but hope it's true.

Though not Hobby Lobby, I have heard that a Great Hobbies branch is opening in Dartmouth Crossing in the next few months. Not sure how good they are for plastic kits, but any new hobby type store will be welcome around here.

The 1995 reissue. As Mark has said, no chrome grill in the kit in, and the one that's there is not stock.

It's good to get your take on this, Bob. As mentioned, I am quite interested to see how well this works. Your endorsement means a lot. I remain somewhat skeptical but ultimately open-minded. I have no doubt they are great on an OOB build. The fit of parts on a painted body will have to be exceptional to remain acceptably clean. Most of my personal concerns regard fine detailing in the areas of windscreen sealant, and the interface between the interior door panel and exterior door panel at the window sill area where I sometimes add all rubber seals, window whiskers, and the slightly exposed top of the retracted side glass. This new method could complicate that process. I am also of the mind that nickel or stainless window trims are best represented by the slightly muted shine of burnished foil rather than brilliant kit chrome. I am also concerned with the potential fragility of the body with those whisper thin A pillars. There is always the option of stripping the chrome and gluing the trim to the body before paint, then foiling afterward. The realism of well prepared and applied foil work on a properly engraved body is hard to beat, providing numerous options to affect a final, authentic appearance. Nonetheless, I am very much looking forward to getting one of these kits and having a go. Just need to source a front clip without the spoiler. I checked the Zoom On site but couldn't find one.

It may change on the lead-up to Christmas, but the Michaels in Dartmouth had none two months ago.
