MPC '67 Vette coupe?
Scott Colmer replied to Bartster's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
Hey Bart, I had the same kit as a kid. It got my first candy apple paint job. It is called Streaker Vette. And it is from MPC. You can find them on ebay for about 40.00. No reissue as the Streaked Vette. Maybe in a different form. If someone knows, maybe they can add in. Scott -
Your favourite Box art
Scott Colmer replied to HotRodaSaurus's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
This has the making of a great thread. Greg, I actually bought the 55 empty box because the art is so cool. The story on that one is the name on the door. Big R racing is for Revell. I think Bob Paeth and another designer are in there too. Callon, that Gypsy wagon is a great one. Tom Daniels has some good ones too. The original Cherry Bomb is one. Some of my favorites. The MCP (AMT?) box with the red convertible gasser vette in a overview shot. Still looking for that box at a reasonable price. And this thread must include the Miss Deal. The front on IVO FED is another good one. Scott -
I lurked through this entire build, checking just about every day. Great fun to watch it come together. You did a fantastic job, Bill. Just excellent through and through. Scott

John, The upgrades to the Red Baron are awesome. I've always liked your version of that one. The Roarin' Rail is also very nice. Another great example of how some detail can really bring these kits to life. David, the planking is just strips of shelf paper. I cut strips form light and dark areas. I darkened some a little more with brown dry brushing. Pete the pontoons are styrene heated and pulled over a buck. http://public.fotki.com/Scottcolmer/island-girl/pontoon1.html If you guys wan to see she really wild stuff, check out Scott Tansley. http://coffincorner.proboards.com/index.cgi?board=ot&action=display&thread=15929

There are some types of builds that don't draw me in either. I have never been able to do the rust thing. If that's someone else's bag - OK. As for the Deals Wheels and Zingers. I'm hooked! Been building them since I was a kid. They are even more fun now! So many ways to work them into something else. David, Ira, and Pete- always been a fan of your stuff. Always will be. This plane one is probably my most favorite model. By building this I learned how to paint wood grain, make woodgrain panels and slats from shelf paper, make heat formed parts from plastic sheet, make rivets, make a piston steering stick, and make an engine turned dash. It's all in the imagination. Scott Hosted on Fotki Hosted on Fotki Hosted on Fotki

Darren, Looks like you are taking this full tilt. Great work so far. Some Photo etched front wheels are in order. You can get them from MAS or Herb Deeks. Here is a link to how they look. Keep going , you are doing great. I think you will better my efforts. Scott http://public.fotki.com/Scottcolmer/race_cars/front_end_ok.html

Originality Counts or does it?
Scott Colmer replied to Jantrix's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
Orginality is the first thing I look for in other builds and strive for in my own work. I really, really appreciate a crazy detailed, double whammy, throw down, blinding shiny model, but it someone shows me something I have never seen before that is thoughfully designed- I'm hooked. In fact, it I have an idea that I see done before I get to it, I am a little bummed, but still pleased to see it done. Scott -
Show circuit
Scott Colmer replied to kustoms4lyfe2's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
Hey, Mark. I think the Best of the Best show you are refering to was organized by Bob Paeth up in OR.. It ran in the mags a few times. I remember Joel D. took it with "The Shark" on one of the early outings. They had one a couple years ago too. I believe Jeff Miller did well in that event. He may have won it. Scott -
Good luck on the Ramchargers build. I did one several years ago. I modified the existing chassis. Yes, you need to fish mouth the ends with a rat tail jewelers file. That and some liquid cement and you will have a good bond. As you can see from Rogers pics, you will have to cut off the rear cowl to get the correct look. The art on the MPC box is of a long nose dragster. The car in the kit is actually of a shorter earlier version of their dragster. I wish I had found Roger's pics when I was doing my build. My pics are below, I really struggled with figuring out the rear of the car. Also note the injector scoop. Different from the kit. The kits moulded in front axel weights are also not on the real car. Wow. What a thread. I've worked in customer service almost exclusively since 1978. In the begining it was a gas station, then the local drug store. Later is was a sign shop and then a small print shop. Then behind the counter in the collectibles section of a specialty auto sales place. Finally, I became an account manger at a national print company. You probaly see our work in your newspaper and mail every week. I've done OK following some of my father's advice. He said he liked the groucy ones. He looked at it like a game to win them over. It takes putting a lot of pride aside. I occasionally joke that dignity is overrated. What did that get me? .... When I first interviewed for account management, I said "I like the difficult customers." That got me a job managing an account that was huge. (I only wish I got any type of commision.) This was a tough account, and I took some unfair abuse sometimes. But I did make it work and upper rmanagement did not have to deal with so many complaints and the company made a good deal of money. Even though it was very frustrating at times, it also got me a career. Sometimes it is worth it. Maybe, sometimes it is right to send them packing, but only as a last resort. Oh - I also do not eat out with people who are rude to the servers. They ruin the meal in more ways then one. Scott .

California Charger F.E.D. update
Scott Colmer replied to vintagedragfan's topic in WIP: Drag Racing Models
Holy Smokes! This is first time I clicked onthis thread. WOW! Excellent, excellent work. Some of the cleanest scratchbuilding around! And it's your first time?!. Even your chassis paint is clean and smooth. It's no wonder you caught the attention of the owner of the real car. Hats off to you, Bill. Scott- 369 replies

Thanks John! I really appreciate the kind words. They are a couple oldies. The top one started as the Revell 29 A delivery. it has Orange crate grill and doors that were cut down and smoothed out. It is still unfinished. I really want to finish it, but its in line behind a couple others. The Purple one is a 33 Willtys Sedan that was shortened. Some of the body lines were moved around to clean it up. I am really glad you liked them. I think you can link back the the album if you click on the pictures. Scott

Here are a couple. Both are Odds and Ends Enamels. The red one was never rubbed out. I just heated the can in water. Laid down a fog coat. Waited 15 minutes then laid down a heavier color coat. Waited another 15 -20 minutes and laid down a slightly heavier color coat. Let it sit for a while before I even touched it. Hosted on Fotki Hosted on Fotki

This actually worked out kinda funny. I only built one plane. Then I gave it away, I really liked this one. Lots of scratch building and learning new stuff. Hosted on Fotki I usually build cars and this, although still unfinished, is the one I really like. Hosted on Fotki Hosted on Fotki Scott

Let's Reveal Our Worst Build's
Scott Colmer replied to modelmike's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
Not my least favorite, but still a pretty bad build. This is the Third incarnation for this one. First built box stock with the green plastic body in the early 70s, Then in the late 70's painted yellow (with fisheyes) and a snorkel hood and a hemi added. In the 80's it became a test bed for learning how to make an aluminum interior from printer's plates. It also got the lower posable front end and tubbed rear. The snorkel scoop got cut off with no paint touch up to follow. It's rough. But I like it for what it is. Hosted on Fotki Hosted on Fotki -
