How to simulate valour seats and vinyl seats
charlie8575 replied to GMP440's topic in Tips, Tricks, and Tutorials
Vinyl is best replicated using semi-gloss paint, or flat paint with a semi-gloss or satin clear overcoat. Gloss paint with a flat over-coat might also work. As to velour, I've seen some of the textured paint at craft stores and the big chain and independent hardware stores. Some of the colors look really good for interiors, too. I've thought of grabbing a can of it and experimenting. Charlie Larkin -
Revell '68 Dodge Charger R/T (UPDATED 8/13/10)
charlie8575 replied to TurboKitty's topic in WIP: Model Cars
Well, this was interesting to say the least. My theory: it's a mass-produced product and goofs happen, and Chrysler, like Dave said, made plenty of them. Call it turquoise and call it done. Too bad someone dropped a 440 in the 318 car; it drives me nuts to see reality being altered like that. Soon, we'll not have any mainstreamers left, which to me is more tragic than anything else. Not everything had big blocks and all the go-fast goodies. For something fun, I'd love to see someone do a bone-stock restoration on one of the 500 or so Slant-Six Chargers made in 1968! Those exhaust trumpets will look nice on that car, Michelle. I agree with the idea of a piece of tubing hit with some polish. My suggestion would be to get some jeweler's rouge or valve-lapping compound, a good soft cloth, and polish the whole length of the tube before cutting it up. You might be able to make it conical with the use of a reamer or similar cone-shaped device. If you try it, make sure you get moderately-thick wall tubing to make sure you have enough material to redistribute. Charlie Larkin -
Aston Martin Db4-1/25 Revell Monogram Update-May 14, 2012
charlie8575 replied to simonr's topic in WIP: Model Cars
WOW! Magnificent work, Simon. Which Dupli-Color paint exactly was it you used? Charlie Larkin -
Very nice work so far, Mark. I'm enjoying watching this come together. Charlie Larkin

Why exactly do you post?
charlie8575 replied to bigmikevee's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
As a then-31-year-old, I got that a lot from my then girlfriend, although she came to think of it as "cute." That was her note of tolerance. I post because it's fun and I get to learn things. Charlie Larkin -
I see what you're talking about, Harry, and I agree with you. It's very close, but not quite. Perhaps a concession to the mold design? or just an "oops." It is a mock-up and prototype, so changes are still possible. Charlie Larkin

Crew cab GMC Syclone.

Nice model, and an interesting choice. Charlie Larkin -

Very, very, cool! I really like this. Charlie Larkin

This one's inspired me to dig out my '76 and get that into the rotation. I have some 1977 GM Dark Blue-Green Met. downstairs that's about the right color for the dark green in '76. I'll probably use that on it, with a buckskin interior and vinyl moldings. Charlie Larkin

I agree it does sit a bit high in the front; it's why I forever fiddle with things before gluing them together. Overall though, a really nice build. Great job. Charlie Larkin

Seriously, it looks better already. Nice work so far, Bruce. Charlie Larkin

That Ford Flex looks moronic as a hearse. I'm sorry; it just does not work. And to think soon we're not going to have any decent cars to base a hearse on. I shudder to think that even someone's final terrestial journey can't be made in something tasteful and dignified. It's very saddening. The LaSalle, on the other hand, is stunning. I wish somebody would make a LaSalle in 1/25. Actually, that Packard is pretty neat, too. Anyone have any idea what museum that's in? Charlie Larkin

What do you think is most important?
charlie8575 replied to bigmikevee's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
The craft and execution is as important as the expression. In high school, my drafting teacher had a wonderful sign, "Ideas are born in the mind of man, and brought into being by the point of a pencil." So it also is with styrene, aluminum and the other sundry materials we call a model. The idea is very important- that's the art form. The concept, and to a great extent, the execution and building. The craftsmanship and challenges in building and how well you deal with them is what determines the success. So it is with designing and producing a product. So it is with this hobby of ours. Does anyone make a '57 Buick Century?
charlie8575 replied to LDO's topic in Car Aftermarket / Resin / 3D Printed
There are several differences between a Century and a Roadmaster. The two most critical to a model: 1. The Century was the "junior series," using a shorter wheelbase chassis and having a shorter overall length. 2. The interiors are totally different as well pattern-wise. I would love to see a mid-50s Buick in styrene, and a Century would make a great choice, but for now, the Roadmaster is what we have. Charlie Larkin -
I can guarantee at least a 1000 sales from the Hudson-Essex-Terreplane Club once word gets out. That is absolutely fantastic! I've spent enough time around the real ones to confirm that this is a VERY accurate model. Please show your support and buy one. You won't be sorry. Charlie Larkin

I can't wait to see some resin conversions for this. A wagon, a sedan, a Newport or New Yorker. Wow! That thing looks great. I'm definitely getting one of these! Charlie Larkin

How do you display your builds
charlie8575 replied to kobuzz's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
They're a little tough to find as A.C. Moore seems to have stopped carrying them, but the display cases made by Pioneer Plastics are very nice. A little more expensive (about $12-15 each,) but VERY tight-fitting and well-designed. Charlie Larkin -
Wow. I just don't what else I can say- or what else needs to be said. Charlie Larkin

Revell '68 Dodge Charger R/T (UPDATED 8/13/10)
charlie8575 replied to TurboKitty's topic in WIP: Model Cars
Great job! That gold really does look like the Chrysler gold of the late '60s. What did you use for the tan interior? It looks just about right to me. My dad had a '68 Charger, 318, dark blue, white vinyl top and a black interior. He has one of those kits downstairs and intends to build a replica of it. Charlie Larkin -
Looking For 66 Lemans Coversion
charlie8575 replied to a topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
I remember seeing taillights for a LeMans someplace. As I remember, I believe a LeMans promo was made, and something is telling me The Modelhaus makes the replacement taillights. The only other pain would be that stainless beauty panel. If you use a GTO, I'd foil-copy the letters, fill the same with expoxy, grind off the letters and simply scratch a beauty panel, trim the letters and glue to the new part. Keep me posted if you go forward with this. I'd be interested in seeing what happens and I know Mike (Foxer) might be, too. Charlie Larkin
