Resin casting articles in MCM
jas1957 replied to Ace-Garageguy's topic in Car Aftermarket / Resin / 3D Printed
I can't help with the MCM issues, but check out Lance Sellers web site. Has a very good pictorial on casting. -
I don't know of one, but get your saw out they are not hard to make .

It was the mid/late '60s & I was an elementary school age car nut. Models were a natural extension of that, plus EVERYONE was building at that time.

Good Build Tips for a 10 year old...
jas1957 replied to JollySipper's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
For my 17 year old daughter anything that is pink or purple is good. As for advice two things, keep your hands & work area clean, take your time don't try to build it in a night. You will have a lifetime of fun, I know I have ! -
My house isn't worth much more than that.
-
We'll see about that. lol
-
Then I'll be second in line !

If the disc is visable behind the wheel cut so that it is centered. On solid wheels it dosn't matter. Another way if the kit has seperate steering knuckles is flip the knuckle upside down.

Tom about covered it, just check the coming events in the magazine or the Contest & Shows or calendar sections of the forum. They are all over the country. Great places to have fun & not sweat the trophies.

Jack's Hobby Castle on Cleveland's west side closed the doors for the last time today. I'd been a customer for 40 years. The original owner died about 10 years ago & his son Mike ran it until he died a few months ago. Mike's daughter tried to keep it going but there were just to many issues conspiring against it. Jack's was the prototype hobby shop, a 15 foot wide store in a hundred year old building with bare wood floors & peeling paint, crude wood shelves & mismatched second hand showcases. It was a great place to talk models & solve world issues. It was also the closest shop to my house, I'll have to find another home away from home. Very sad day.

How many miles do you get out of a clutch?
jas1957 replied to Modlbldr's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
Depends how it is driven, had a '88 Mustang LX 5.0 sold it with 90,000 & the original clutch. Junked a '95 Saturn a year ago, 108,000 & original clutch also. Replacing one is not the easiest job so I tend to baby them. The longer I can get away without replacing one the better. I wouldn't want to even think what a shop would charge to do that job. -
Who Was Richard Carroll?
jas1957 replied to Casey's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
I don't know about the stand offish part, he was a guest at the at the Toledo NNL Nationals maybe 10-12 years ago. Brought a bunch of his old builds & several sets of wheels we gave away as door prizes. I didn't really talk to him but he seemed friendly enough. -
Thank you Art, you answered a couple questions I had. I'm working on a glue bomb '61 Valiant, the plastic seems much harder than what we are used to. I was wondering if that was the aging of the plastic or the way it was new. Also some of the engraving & parts fit is to be kind not so hot.

Removing laquer from Resin question
jas1957 replied to drodg's topic in Car Aftermarket / Resin / 3D Printed
I'm aware of soaking to long. Never let anything in Scalecoat & Bleche White for more than a very few hours. -
Removing laquer from Resin question
jas1957 replied to drodg's topic in Car Aftermarket / Resin / 3D Printed
That is exactly what I do, the two containers are next to each other on a shelf in the basement. I've used the same batch of Scalecoat & Bleche White for a long time. The stuff never goes bad. -

Scalecoat is a great product, not inexpencive but I've used the same stuff for YEARS. Just keep it in a sealed Rubbermaid container. -
AMT '53 & '55 Vette, The bodies, interiors & chassis are all nice but try putting them all together & it just don't work.

Conestoga wagon
jas1957 replied to Harry P.'s topic in WIP: All The Rest: Motorcycles, Aviation, Military, Sci-Fi, Figures
Very nice Harry, the info on the wheels is really interesting. There was a company back in the '60s that made wooden kits of various wagons. My dad made several of them, they still look good 45 + years later. Wish I could remember the name of the kit manufacturer. Have you ever seen one of those things in person ? They are huge ! Must have weighed a couple tons empty. -
It's not resin but the Graffiti Coupe kit has a pretty nice beam front axle. I've used it on a couple builds.
