Revell Tom "The Mongoose" McEwen Rail Dragster
iBorg replied to Evil Appetite's topic in Car Kit News & Reviews
I can tell you why they quit doing it.....when originally issued superglue wasn't commonly available. Expoxy was also difficult to find. With the adhesives that were available (1975 or so) getting those parts to stick where you wanted them was pretty much impossible. Those wonderful pre wired distrubutors and fuel lines ended up never used. Kit truly looks like a direct repop of the '75 kit without the decals. That doesn't really bother me as the car wasn't ran much or if at all in the Carefree markings (it was first issued in a red-orange with main markings from Carefree gum). I do wish they'd re-did it as the Hot Wheels Blue McEwen dragster. -
One thing to improve on.....drill your center hole for the spindle mount before yo make the rest of the wheel. I do think you did a good job on keeping the flange very close on the two rims.

The SLM directory may be the best. Visit it at: http://www.straightlinemodeler.org/parts/parts.html

Wow...... Wow>>>> Did I say Wow? Very impressed. I'm humbled.

The front were raised to aid weight transfer due to the lacking traction of the slicks. Most associations limited the crank centerline to be no more than 24 inches above the ground.

I agree with Charlie about the bodies. The MPC USA-1 Camaro is pretty much the stock MPC Camaro body with a molded in hood. The Revell kit has some of the proportions right but the front of the greenhouse looks like some sat on it. I have scene someone merge an AMT Camaro greenhouse to it and come out with a nice product. Did you have to adjust the wheelbase at all or does that body have the same wheelbase as the PL cars?

Decembers Mongoose kit will be the 70's Monogram kit!
iBorg replied to Dragline's topic in WIP: Drag Racing Models
Never thought that word (non cuss word) that I've heard preachers use from the pulpit would be #######ed out. If you're wondering what word, it sounds like a type of fish....... I try not to use those others. -
Decembers Mongoose kit will be the 70's Monogram kit!
iBorg replied to Dragline's topic in WIP: Drag Racing Models
I just hope their quality control is good. They really have done either a great job or a ###### with this mold. I have yet to see the re-issued Jeb Allen kit that was build able. The frame rails were plastic pretzels. I have other releases and they were perfect. -
As of about five years ago the Mustang FC non chrome parts were in the hands of Jo-Han/Oakey Spaulding. I know as I bought two test shots from him. At the time he told me he was unaware of the whereabouts of the chrome. Mike

At first I thought this was spam......but nice pics. Wonder if they're selling the car to afford the house?

'8 Dodge Daytona: Sem-replica of a1:1 I owned
iBorg replied to Olskoolrodder's topic in WIP: Model Cars
I'm interested in following this build. I've got a Laser XT sitting in the garage needing a fairly extensive rebuild. This is a kit, I'd like to add to my collection. Mike -
I saw Corvette but the fuel filler got me. Very impressive work. Mike

There's a concept I never would have thought of......let's cross Indy car with a Viper. Salute!

Real..... The wheels and window detail is too subtle for most models. The decals aren't available and the gold is wrong for an Alps. The body doesn't appear to be resin. Also the texture under the car carries on without a break between the foreground and the background. Note the pavement crack. The shadows are right for 1:1. Real......

What is everyones opinion on the I-Hobby announcements?
iBorg replied to GMP440's topic in Car Kit News & Reviews
I'm so-so..... The Gremlin will be nice to have back. I don't remember how "nice" it is. The Beswick funny car will be nice if its priced right although I'm not sure it will be in much demand since Revell blessed us with a good Logghe chassis. Now if Revell would take that chassis put an accurate body and motor on it and make a USA-1 Camaro they would have a home run. The Petty Charger will be nice to have available. I have a built up street charger and this will be one sweet piece depending on price. The Camaro convertible I'll probably buy. Should be able to make it a father-son project. The slot cars will flop. The Lindberg Bullhorn T could be good but needs to be priced right. I'm looking forward to Iwata Neo airbrush. Could be a great entry level brush. Hmm can you say ......$50 retail price and Hobby Lobby discount coupon.... Am I excited? Is there anything to get me to drive to a hobby slot frothing at the mouth to buy? No. I'll wait for discount coupons and buy if the price is right and the mood strikes. -
I've had a few talks with Okey Spaulding about reissues. If the molds were useable and complete they have more than likely been reissued. He had no clue as to what he was buying as well as the overall poor condition of the molds. The Maverick wasn't economically feasible to be re-issued due to damaged or incomplete molds and licensing fees. The Mustang funny car was missing the chrome tree. He did do some test shots of the non chrome and I bought three or so of those. They were better than most of the original Jo-han pieces. If Seville didn't re-issue it, Johan (new spelling) doesn't have it. One of the weird things about this business is that while we refer to kits as Jo-han, the owner of the mold is free to use it irregardless of who created the mold. The interesting legal question I would have is if you reverse engineered from a Jo-han kit, would you be violating a copyright that is now owned by Mr. Spaulding. I think we're truly lucky that the AMT and MPC molds survived. We aren't that lucky concerning Jo-han. What I'd like to see is the Jo-han bodies and engines (they were typically excellent) merged with better interiors (truly hit or miss) and chassis.

Billy the kid Stepp Prostock Demon update 10/13
iBorg replied to ratnasty's topic in WIP: Drag Racing Models
I've often wondered why Billy The Kid has been ignored by decal makers. I'd prefer the Challenger, but this sure is a sweet piece. -
I'll watch this one also. I'm curious about the chassis build.
-
I love it. This is a car that keeps on coming to my mind to model. Great job. Mike

Let's be honest this is a low production kit. There's no way it will sell in the numbers a good '71 Challenger would or even a stock Gremlin. It is a niche kit. We may whine about this or that but how much would we be thrilled to pay for the same quality in resin of the same kit? I'll agree we expect it to be perfect but what kit is? I drooled over the new Chi-Town Hustler. I'm terribly disappointed in the body, the engine is the wrong vintage and I'd prefer more assembly on the chassis to have round tubes. Such over pickyness makes a kit that offers great enjoyment a "look at and put back on the shelf" model. What is wrong with me? What's wrong with the other modelers who drooled over a HUDSON..... Never in my life did I expect that? When it was announced I had to check the date and be sure it wasn't 4/1. $25 for this kit is a bargain. Poorer quality with fewer details would be over $50 in resin.

This is one kit that I can't understand why it hasn't been re-issued. If building something like this doesn't make you smile, you're a grouch! Mike

Richard Petty Superbird
iBorg replied to slantasaurus's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
I'm not feeling well. Came close to upchucking on my keyboard. Dear me, its as bad as most of the Trans Am Camaros. Overweight with wheels that are oversized but still don't fill out the wheel well.
