you sure have made the old boxy Merc. look fast standing still. Why not go one step further and take the "dip" out of the door, something no one seems to do anymore . All it takes is a little bit of Putty and it makes the body line smooth out. Just a suggestion, not a complaint. The car looks amazing!

I won an auction for 2 older Monogram kits for $25.00 One was a Darrel Waltrip Combo, the other was #3 Wrangler combo. While these are probably not the most accurate kits, I thought they would be good fodder for bashing, etc. Imagine my surprise, when I picked them up and found they were very heavy for combo kits. The boxes were sealed with packing tape. I got home, opened the boxes only to find built up models, highly detailed, ( wired & plumed) detail painting, a total of 20 different models of various cars and drivers. The quality of the builds is so good, I don't want to or need to disassemble them as I could do no better.

In 1967, I believe it was the Daytona 500, Wendell wrecked his car in practice and pretty much destroyed the front clip. A bid shot with Holman Moody told him he could use the front sheet metal from his personal car. Wendel spent most of the night removing and replacing the sheet metal and had it ready for qualifying the next day. I don't remember where he qualified, or where he finished, I'm sure he was in the top 10 or 15, but when the race was over, he thanked the H/M rep, loaded the car on his trailer, new front sheet metal( from H/M reps car and toodeled back home with a smile on his face. I am so glad to see someone build a tribute to Wendel. He was, and will be the best non white driver, that ever sat behind a wheel.

Ray, don't throw your money down a black hole. It is one of the most inaccurate kits I've ever seen.

You know when I retired, I thought, Oh boy now I got time to work on my favorite hobby! Well, I keep finding these unbelievable threads to follow, and I cant find time for modeling. I have seen some of the very best that modeling has to offer, and I cant stop looking. You sir are in a league of your own. This little coup and all that goes with it is art work and my hat is off to you. Thanks for sharing .

If you look at the 289 motor, the oil pan is flat. Flatten the Chevy oil pan like wise, and I believe it will work.

Mr. Jones, this is and has always been one of my favorite racing cars. following along with your build has been eye opening event. I have seen some fine model building in this forum, this is not one. This is an artistic labor of love. I have never seen this attention to detail in any other build, especially in 1/12 scale. Just the amount of work that went into making the doors open properly....WOW! Anyway thanks for your build and sharing it with us. I cannot wait to see more. Thanks again. Mike

Hey guys & girls, don't forget to check that muffler belt, a bad one just ruins your bottom end!

The R8 Gordini was raced quite successfully in SCCA in 66 & 67. The Renualt factory team brought over several cars to compete. The only real compition they had was the Mini Coopers, and a R8 prepared by Ed Zink of formula Vee fame. The cars did not come with roll bars,and were not "race ready" from the factory, altho they were supposed to be. With a little work(lol) they could be made very compitive. The Zink car could reach a top speed of about 140 mph.

Two things, I believe most of the early "289" cobras were red, black, or yellow. The yellow car referred to in this post, not only had flares on the rear, but also had "spats" on the front. I'm not as well versed on cobras as some, I do think these two facts need to be brought to light.

I can tell the walls are closing in on you. How about stretching the front end and putting an Allison V12 under the hood? Now that should keep your mind occupied. Oh by the way I thought the VW powered snake was wild and gave me a real chuckle!

Learned to drive in a Dalphine, Raced a factory R8 Gordini, that was anything but race ready. A friend did a "little work on it" and then it was very competive. The fun thing was on the street, I really shocked some Mustangs, and Camaros. Red light to red light they didn't stand a chance. Great build of a rare and fast car.

I must apologize, I was thinking about csx2002, I'm in the process of building the 02 to add to my ever growing list of important Cobras. Thanks for your info.

Also the hood you describe is from the 390 Cobra that ran at Nassau.

CSX 2001 was the first purpose built race car built by Shelby cars. Was not converted from a street car like others. They flared the rear fenders, and added "spatzs" to the fronts so the Hillbrand wheels would not stick out past the body of the car. The reason for the switch to Hillbrand wheels was the wires they used came apart at high speeds. There were no side vents or exit holes for exhaust like the 427"s. Front brake ducts were below the front valance to the outside of the jacking points. Also the CSX2001 was a 289 not a 427.

GM installed a Wankel in a Monte Carlo in 70 or 71. They drove it around N.Y. city. After three trips around the block they had burnt the tires completely to the steel belts and decided it was not worth the cost of refinement. Any way that is what Car& Driver reported back then.................

Beautiful!!!! Ive been waiting to see the "Wega" finished. Have no doubt in 1to1 it draw lots of att. not to mention embarass a lot of mustangs,corvetts lambos etc.
