The Most Dangerous Car You've Ever Owned
Agent G replied to David G.'s topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
100k was a benchmark for trading a car for a very long time. Now it seems with proper maintanence and care most cars will exceed that by a fair length. My '05 Lincoln has 57k + and it acts as if it's just getting broken in. I'm planning on keeping it for a long time, not to mention the fact the model will be discontinued soon. G -

The Most Dangerous Car You've Ever Owned
Agent G replied to David G.'s topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
The first was the worst,'62 Catalina 421SD. It was mechanically sound which, in itself, was the issue. This car was so darn quick in a straight line as to be scary. It wouldn't stop and it wouldn't corner. Naturally there were "modifications", like the surfer foot gas pedal and matching brake and clutch pedals. No rubber, just cast aluminum and slippery as heck. Then there was the issue of the classic hotrod steering wheel. Black vinyl, chrome and maybe 12" in diameter. Yeah...........ever try to steer a car this size with a small wheel and no power steering? Looking back I'm glad it was gone before I rotated home. That Poncho had a better chance than Charlie ever had of taking me out. G -
Paint the white circle, then paint two small black circles within that. Go back and put two white dots within the black circles, voila' an "8 ball" G

I want to say that in Finescale long long ago, someone had an article on building the C11ADF from that very kit. They modded the dash for righthand drive and scratched the fiddly military bits. Naturally all those long ago issues are stashed in box after box just waiting to be unearthed. I also have not been able to corral that ellusive round tuit. G

Gary I actually found a few photos of what I think were '40 Ford PU's, and a Studebaker. I was researching the "Montford Point" Marines and found shots with these in the background. I met one of the old breed Montford marines years ago at Camp LeJeune NC. Old boy was in his 60's then, still lean, mean, and all dark green. He was a civilian running the chow hall. That was some good food. G

Your Very First Real Car
Agent G replied to FujimiLover's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
1962 Pontiac Catalina 421 SD. I got it in 1972 from a guy in north St Louis that didn't know what she was. It'd been painted that darn chevy metallic lt. green by the time I bought it. Freakin' car would run like heck in a straight line. Don't try to stop, and don't try to corner. I was on Okinawa in '75 when Dad wrote saying the car was leaking all over the garage. He said he could sell it to a guy for more that we spent. I actually doubled my money and later bought a cherry '72 Buick Skylark and a new Yamaha TX 500. Here's a model of the car, 'cause pics are nowhere to be found. G -
Have I posted this one yet? I built this as if a young guy bought a cheap car and put his money into making it run. This is the old Lindbergh kit from a millenia ago. Surprise! I had fun with this one. G

Take a Moment and say a prayer

I went in at 3pm that day. For maybe the first time in 20 years I can honestly say I had no idea what was going to happen and I realized we were woefully unprepared for whatever was next. What brought it home for me was my then 14 year old son. He was in his good Jesuit school when it happened. They brought the boys into the cafeteria and allowed them to watch on tv. My son said he came in later and caught some footage live as the first tower fell. He didn't know what was happening, or where. He said his first thought was it must be bad because he saw cops running, but not toward the event. Years later he told me that stuck in his mind for a long time. G -
Whats your favorite brand of car?
Agent G replied to Jared Roach's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
Yessir the very same same motor. That mother will run. First time the new Mrs Gray drove it she was all agog. Funny too is the MPG, I average 22-23 on the daily commute which is half and half. All freeway is a blast, and I have seen as high as 30. I reset the meter on the fly once and logged 31.1 NB on the 15 between Baker and Barstow. That was at 80. I definately love this car, and am sad it will soon be discontinued. G -
Whats your favorite brand of car?
Agent G replied to Jared Roach's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
If it has wheels and an engine I like it. I was always partial to GM products, but always owned a Ford pickup. Go figure. Then I bought my Lincoln. The Town Car has been one of the best darn cars I have ever had. Us old wide body types need that comfort, and the thing moves too. Most don't realize the Town Car has the same engine/drivetrain as a Crown Vic Police Interceptor. The only real difference is the rear end ratio. When you consider the weight of a fully equipped police Vicky compared to the TC you realize they are almost identical. No comparison in ride and handling, though the Lincoln can hold it's own with an experienced driver. G
