  1. gonna clear coat them.
  2. I would try Dupli Color paints..go to Autozone or a local parts store, tell them you want to match the paint on a '64 Mustang...they have colors that are close.
  3. This is sooo easy a caveman could do it , if they had this kind of stuff back then..... This all can be done for just under $5.00 or even less, depends on where you go and how much you pay for stuff.. You will need as shown 30"x20" foam board some kind of tape, preferably clear boxing tape x-acto knife ruler or straight edge w/ tape measure pen or pencil Second , you will need to mark the "bottom" side of the board with measurements and lines as shown. Third , you need to start by placing your straight edge like shown and use your x-acto blade to cut "all the way through" to remove the squares as shown. Fourth move is easy as well! Once you have removed both squares..... then take your straight edge and place it on the lines you drew and "score" , do NOT go all the way through! "score" the lines (as if you are cutting sheet rock). Once you have scored the lines, you will just bend each wall over and as long as you scored evenly, the walls will fold over EASY.....if they don't , go back and look where you need to cut deeper. If you have scored nicely, when walls are folded it will look like this. This is where the tape comes in! keep the walls up and tight together as you run tape on the "outside" of the box SEALING the cracks with the tape pulled snug. If you go around the box nice and evenly and keep the walls snug as you tape them.....you will keep gaps from forming. IMPORTANT....to pay attention to gaps! If you have sealed the seams up, this is how the box will look ALMOST ready for photos! Now that you are such a macho man, you wrestled foam board and boxing tape.....grab a lamp man! You NEED some friggen lighting when you take pics! The flash will NOT do the trick dudes! *you need both in most cases, flash & a lamp*
  4. I stopped using 50/50 black 3 plus years ago. I wanted to try something out with a new pen I bought that I originally thought would work well with other detailing. The pen is PIGMA MICRON 005 #1 Archival Ink made for acid free environments. The tip is 0.20mm width. These come in other sizes and colors too! This one particularly fits right between most grille bars so you can black out the areas that should be "see through". It takes maybe a day to completely dry on chrome surfaces. (made for paper so what do ya expect?) The ink lays right now, sometimes you might have to change angles while "coloring" the area to make sure it spreads to all edges evenly. I use the pen for doing gages, dash detail such as glove box door lines to make them stand out. You can do a lot with these things! Here is a picture of the pen tip compared to the spaces between grille bars. Only half the grille is done here. The main reason I use these over mixed black and thinner, is because when I am done the chrome bars (stuff that should be chrome) actually stands out a lot better. With the paint mix from a brush it's dulling the chrome parts that you want to show up bright! I hope this makes sense... The pen is under $5.00 at most art supply stores like Hobby Lobby or Michael's. (look closely at the very end of the tip and see a tiny black tip)
  5. I asked around a lot before deciding what the best way to store my decals was. After getting responses , numerous people said they used zip-lock baggies and photo albums with the sleeves in them. I decided to go with the page protectors and sleeves. I am using pages that are meant to hold an 8x11 sheet of paper to keep the longer and larger sheets in and i am using the pages with five of the 5" x 3 1/2" pockets. These work great! My decals don't slide around on each other as the pages sort of vaccum themselves shut and hold all decals in place. Hosted on Fotki Hosted on Fotki
  6. tools needed xacto knife qtip tooth pick fine sand paper or file first put bare metal foil over letters and carefully trim around each letter Hosted on Fotki letters should be exposed like this before final coat of paint Hosted on Fotki shoot final coat of paint and let it dry Hosted on Fotki use a fine grade of paper or file like shown to rub the tops of the letters off. this will expose shiny chrome. Hosted on Fotki this is how it looks after you file the tops of the letters, very carefully. Hosted on Fotki
  7. I did this awhile back, but a lot of people seemed to use it...thought you guys could cuz it's definately a way to build Nostalgic! Hosted on Fotki Hosted on Fotki
  8. I am posting some of my own right now....keep an eye out.
  9. I like to store my prize aluminum in a plastic PLANO tackle box like shown below. This keeps my parts clean, safe and seperated from each other. The spaces have removable walls for longer parts such as Adjustable Push Bars or Lake Pipes and Drilled Drop Axles. I also like it for the fact, it's easy to take with me. Parts like these are not easy to come by and i want to make sure they are safe for that special project. got sum? Hosted on Fotki look how it snaps shut in case i drop the case, nothing falls out and nothing seperates....it all stays in one spot! Hosted on Fotki
  10. As owner of two forums and three yahoo groups...(used to be several more)....I have to say that it's just the way it is. I have learned that though there are 827 members on my Traditional Rod and Kustom forum, only 110 visit daily, it's not always the same 110 people.. Out of those 827 members, I would guess about 20 or more aren't finished with their registration, 200 or more are foreign and don't understand english, can't read it and just want to see the models. Probably 100 of them don't know how to post , let alone show photos of their work. Another 50 might think their work is not good enough or maybe they don't like taking pictures....or they can't because they don't have a camera.... These things add up....sometimes a member comes out and introduces himself just to say hello and let everyone know they are admiring the models....but just want to "lurk".. The number of members on this forum, multiply the numbers....it's the same way on all forums. It doesn't bother me much that it's this way. If all the members posted daily, I would go insane trying to keep up and just lose interest! I rarely show in progress builds here. Why? I just don't have time to keep up with it....I forget to update , etc etc.. I have a system I worked out for myself. I like to post progress on my own forum because of the way I build I get a better response from the others that build old school rod and kustom stuff. That keeps me going! When the model is finished, I always post it here because I do value everyone's comments and I like to share! I just can't share everything I do on every single forum I go to is all. Make sense? More time at the bench and less time chasing replies on multiple forums.
  11. I would be enjoying it. I doctored your photo because I couldn't see past the darkness. Looks like a lot of fun!
  12. I live about 3 minutes from Steve. I have been to his place many times, went on trips with him to shows and helped him with inventory and other stuff. Steve, is without a doubt one of the most honest people I know. He doesn't cast any of the stuff he sells, which some people think he does. He is fast shipping and very fair on prices. One thing anyone dealing with Steve should realize is....he works a full time job on top of his business. He works late most of the time, so he doesn't answer the phone or emails until he is home from work. If you call him, you HAVE to leave a message or you will not get a call back. He gets a lot of calls and can't keep track of unknown numbers and such. So make sure to leave a message with your name, what you were calling for and your number. I am not his "speaker"....but he has told me this many , many times.
  13. the guy in the middle looks like Wierd Al! kidding...but that is really cool to see! never seen such an old picture of Bruce before.
  14. Yeah Harry, I was just wondering what happened is all. I don't know when the next one is , when it ends or anything....there should be an "official" page or thread that has only the information in it and should be locked so that it doesn't get out of control with questions....then another thread to ask questions?
  15. umm yeah....never bought any because I could tell in the worst photos they are horrible. I have heard some guys praise them up and down.....but those people must be new to resin. It's unfortunate that people who are "new to resin" buy that junk and if they realize how bad it is.....they refuse to buy resin from ANYone again because they are scared to waste money. (have friends that way)
  16. I was only 3 years old when ya built that That's a really high end build for that time period, well done! I would like to see your other models if you want to post them. Some guys say "nah, everyone's seen it".....but really I would like to see more, I have never seen this Chevy before and I like it! DOH! I will check your link.
  17. Is this still going? If so, can you post the rules up "freshen" the idea for us?
  18. Love it, simple and that's just how a lot of them ran....run what ya brung!
  19. that's nice! I have never seen one before, very cool!
  20. Thanks for the explanation. That's lame...entering other peoples builds at shows unless asked to do so or as "display only" with an explanation crediting the real builder.....just lame...then taking credit for the build in a magazine knowing how many people will see it....is like not caring about anything other than having your name in the magazine and allowing others to think you are something greater because of it...guess what?....there's probably 5,000 more Jimmy Joe's within 10,000 miles!....so unless the work is yours, your name doesn't mean much either. Better luck to you on this, but I wouldn't doubt if it keeps happening....I see it a lot.
  21. Doesn't upset me a bit! I applaud you for that! I never take anyone else's models to shows...in fact I only own two models not built by me and they stay in my case. I don't understand why anyone would take a model that's not theirs to a show and not even have the courtesy to put an explanation on the card? ....why take a model unless it's yours or the owner asks you to do it for them? I saw some of Dave's models in magazine coverage before and the wrong name.... I have seen people win at contests with models they bought off ebay....that just boils my buttocks! again...the WHY?...cheat others out of their rightful place in a contest just to get the award....ahh well I am about to start ranting sorry... Back to the subject here....what happened? was the model stolen or sold or?
  22. that's just wicked! great weathering job ,but the thing I like most is the car it'self...a '66 Fairlane with an injected 427 and nose up? looks awesome! Makes me wanna build one but it would be 'shiny' hehe
  23. First of all....I enter shows but don't expect or care if I win..I am just not competitive really. (had to clear that up) Yes Elden Titus RIP..he started a contest at the Kustom Kemps of America show in Salina, Kansas. The grand prize is $500.00....awards are the same as the 1:1 rides that go to that show.
  24. Some of the comments I have seen on here were kinda rude....more than just opinions if ya know what I mean. I have to say in most cases I either found it funny because sometimes being honest can be funny...because in some cases it takes guts to say the truth that might be hard to read.....but when it hurts someones feelings...then that person needs to lighten up and learn to take comments on the "rough side". I don't even understand why there are so many people who get hurt by comments and then never post again?....it's not like it's personal attacks? (maybe some have been?) I look at nearly all the models here and if it's not my thing....I don't comment. If it's my thing and it's just not exactly how I would prefer it....I will at least leave a comment on something about it. If the paint is rough..I usually don't say anything about it....but if I like the color I will say I do so. If I REALLY like it...you will know. Thick skin is just part of my personality guys. It takes a LOT , sometimes years to really get under my skin. I am very open to other people's views and have no problem with whatever a person has to say about my models. If anyone here thinks the comments are harsh on this forum....try my forum and see how far you get posting stuff that doesn't fit the "guidelines" The forum is really strong and it's because of the people there, the friendships and because of "what it's about". If the parts and style of the model is not pre1970....it's usually deleted without warning. The forum is just for certain types of models....so we ward off things that don't fit and try to keep the "traditional" rod and kustom modeling alive. It's nothing personal....most the members there actually build outside that frame.....but none of us share those models on the board. Just wanted to give an example of how good it is here.....you can post ANYTHING you want if it's plastic models.....there will always be people who don't care for your model, style, attitude and other things.....so just buck up and do what you do.....don't worry about what others think of your models and have fun.....that's what this hobby is about!
