A retirement coming in the aftermarket!
MrObsessive replied to Art Anderson's topic in Car Aftermarket / Resin / 3D Printed
I'm sad to hear this but at the same time I'm glad for Don and Carol! Yeah, 35 years in this biz is a very long time, and they will have some very big shoes to fill for sure. Guess I better order that '76 Caddy Coupe De Ville I've had my eye on before too long huh?? -
Once again, Batwing Chevy...

Adam, in answer to your one question, the trunks are shorter on the sedans. Your conversion is looking quite correct from where I sit so keep up the good work. -
1957 CADILLAC ELDORADO BROUGHAM,,quality questions?
MrObsessive replied to gtx6970's topic in Car Kit News & Reviews
Dave, I have no idea. I just did a search for Revell '57 Cadillac Eldorado Brougham, and that's one of the pics that turned up. You might want to check out the '59 Cadillac PE set from Model Car Garage. I have a set (not in front of me at the moment---packed away in the attic), and those badges and letters look familiar. -
1957 CADILLAC ELDORADO BROUGHAM,,quality questions?
MrObsessive replied to gtx6970's topic in Car Kit News & Reviews
This is just me, but I always thought that kit had some proportional problems. The width, length, relationship/shape of the roofline in proportion to the rest of the car, just never appeared correct to me. I tried building one back in the mid '90's with some corrections, but gave up on it. Might try to attempt it again someday. Now as Art said, with some time and patience, it can be built into something very nice. Gunze Sangyo did a 1/32 scale version years ago and while it's not the "correct" scale for many folks, it looks light years ahead in appearance as opposed to the Revell version. Might be worth checking it out........... Edit: Some pics for comparison.......... Revell's builtup as swiped off of Photobucket: And the 1:1....... Jus' sayin............ -
'68 Shelby Mustang Convertible
MrObsessive replied to VRM's topic in Car Aftermarket / Resin / 3D Printed
Very, very nice! You've got the "hip" shape right as convertibles were not fastbacks with the roof cut off. They used the quarters from the coupe.........the hips were "lower" and the very rear quarter sections were just a scooch taller/straighter. I'd be the renegade and use the nicer AMT '67 Shelby for the running gear and such. The extra work would be worth it. The only change I would make on the body is to reshape/remake the vent wing posts a bit. On the 1:1, they don't quite come up to the very corner of the windshield header, but sit just slightly below it. Easy fix with some square rod......... Edit: Steve, do you have any pics of the front end? One of the things that's bugged me for years, is the shape of the AMT '68 Shelby's grille. It seemed too "upright" and square compared to the 1:1. Not a difficult fix, but one of those signature things that makes a Shelby a Shelby. -
Revell 2015 2nd Qtr releases
MrObsessive replied to Exotics_Builder's topic in Car Kit News & Reviews
Ha! Wouldn't you know it?? I plunked down $50 on an original Revell Porsche 914 kit a few months ago off eBay, and now they have the nerve to reissue it! I'm glad to see it back though.........that kit has a LOT of potential! The other offerings-------ehhhhhh not that crazy about, but they'll be moneymakers for Revell certainly. -
Thanks Steve and Scott! I haven't forgotten about the Mustang------it's been awhile since any updates. Crazy busy at work with 10+ hour days and with my Challenger now, it'll be that much easier to pay off the loan and get rid of the debt that much sooner! We were told there's no end in sight as far as the work load........fine enough with me as it's more money in my pocket! I did do some work on the front end regarding the grille recently..........some changes had to be made to make it more in line with the 1:1. No pics as of yet, but maybe over the weekend I can give a bit of an update. In fact, the only thing left to do is get it painted, let it thoroughly dry, and move on to final assembly. Finally! Thanks again for the nice words fellas!

Tamiya Mercedes 300SL Announced, new pics added to OP
MrObsessive replied to martinfan5's topic in Car Kit News & Reviews
I had forgotten Tomy made a 300 SL...........I DO remember an equally superb Porsche 356 in that scale and it was super nice! I went ahead and preordered the Benz on HLJ.......can't beat that price at today's exchange rate, and I suspect that'll be one of those kits that will sell out fast. -

What an absolutely gorgeous kit! This is definitely on my must have list! That clear bottom is an excellent idea! Edit: Does anyone know if those doors are fully functional, or are they just "poseable"? -
AMT '67-'68 Camaro Review & Improvements
MrObsessive replied to Snake45's topic in Tips, Tricks, and Tutorials
I also saved this thread! Very interesting info............there are things pointed out that I never would have noticed on the AMT body and I have this kit. And yes, that Revell rear end is atrocious! That would actually be one of the first things I'd fix if I ever got around to building (fixing) this. Thanks Snake! -
I'm sorry to hear of your loss Scott. Having went through this a few years ago, it's never easy. Still think about my KitKat from time to time. Now my other one who's nearly 13 is starting to have problems. Yeah, it's tough to see them grow old and not play like they used to.........you get so attached to them, and how well I know that.

No intrest in Sport Sedans ?
MrObsessive replied to Jon Haigwood's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
Revell did the '57 Eldorado Brougham. However that kit needs MAJOR work to correct a lot of its shortcomings. It is a four door hardtop though.......... Unfortunately as Casey said, don't hold your breath for any kitmaker to tool up a new four door hardtop kit. For a lot of builders, I guess they just don't have the "cool" factor a two door or other sporty variant would have. Heck, I'd love to see more modern day four door sedans period! Pontiac G8, Cadillac CTS (current ones, and last version), current Dodge Charger to name a few. -
Not my favorite Chrysler of this era, but that one is super NICE! The outside photos really show it off!

To clear coat or not
MrObsessive replied to atomicholiday's topic in Model Building Questions and Answers
I'm not a believer in clearcoating solid colors as there should be enough hardener in the paint to make this unnecessary. To me, it's just more work to have to put yet another coat(s) of paint on when I could be rubbing out and polishing what's already there. The following were done with no clearcoat..........just careful rubbing out and polishing. Here's an exception...........the Daytona I built years ago is actually a metallic paint job. The flakes are very subtle, but they're there. I rubbed this one out per normal and it came out fine. As Snake mentioned, rubbing out metallics are generally a no-no, but sometimes you have exceptions. This is just my personal preference------your mileage (performance) will vary. -
Sure would like to see those 1/24 10 spoke 1967-68 Shelby wheels come back! I have a set, but would love to get a couple more for future projects.

That car is on my "someday" list to build--------particularly the Harlowe Curtice version. Yeah, that is a HEFTY chunk of change for a car that will hardly ever see the road. It may have a better chance of selling if it were offered on the Barrett-Jackson auctions for example. Different type of clientele would be watching, and certainly better exposure. At least one thing that auction has going for it......EXCELLENT reference photos! I'm watching it to save the pics later on for that very reason!

Had a dream of mine come true.
MrObsessive replied to jrherald420's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
I'm not a street rod guy, but that is VERY, VERY NICE!! Congrats on getting in the mag! -
When I was a kid in the '60's, I saw these from time to time in my neighborhood. They always reminded me of a big roach coming down the road the styling was so weird, especially in black! I may get one just for that reason-------------weird styling and all, and you just don't see 'em anymore! One wouldn't be complete without some hydraulic fluid leaking somewhere on the bottom though............... Does anyone know which year this is supposed to represent?

Isn't that actually a '67 Plymouth GTX and not a Coronet? The side creases and taillights are the giveaway.........

Mr. Obsessive's "New" Obsession! :)
MrObsessive replied to MrObsessive's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
Someimes I think the whole industry should go retro! Some of the things I see on the road that are supposed to be "new" are just horrible! Harry, did you get your new Mustang yet? That's another one I've drooled over as there's one in my neighborhood now. -

That's very interesting Gregg, I'll definitely check into that! For sure, I'll be getting rid of my current carrier before the month is through. -
Mr. Obsessive's "New" Obsession! :)
MrObsessive replied to MrObsessive's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
Thanks for all the nice words and compliments fellas! I intend to hang on to this one for the very long haul barring nothing tragic happens to it. One thing I meant to mention........I did call the first dealer back to let him know I appreciated his trying to sell me the other car, but that I did find what I was looking for originally, and I'm very happy with it. I got his voicemail, but I never received a call back to say thanks or anything. Just goes to show that some sales folks really are into their job (like the Challenger salesman), and some just want to put in a day's work and that's it. I was on my way home just a bit ago, and stopped at the local gas station. A fellow who was getting in a '90's era Honda said to me "That's a VERY nice car!" He said that he rented one when he was in Arizona back when they came out in '09, and he's wanted one ever since. I thanked him for the compliment, and remembered that's how it was when I had my AMX. EVERYWHERE I went, folks would comment about the car as they weren't often seen. That can be good or bad as there are some jealous hearts out there, but that's how it goes. This fellow was a nice guy, so I didn't pick that up in him. I just know how folks can be unfortunately.
