best model car parts
MrObsessive replied to stitchdup's topic in Car Aftermarket / Resin / 3D Printed
Tommy, somewhere on the page there should be a link where you can drop him a line (go to his feedback). Maybe he can make an exception and send what you need? That could be the case that he had to drop international shipping for a time as Les mentioned. -
Pleeeeaaaase don't use regular masking tape! That can create more havoc than it's worth. Ray suggested using Tamiya tape for masking and I wholeheartedly agree. I've done many a paint job and never had a problem with masking and paint peeling up. Here's a latest example where I just did a two-tone on this '55 Ford WIP. You want to also make sure your paint is thoroughly dry, but not leave the tape on excessively long. I believe I had the tape on mine for maybe overnight, pulled it off the next day with no problem. When pulling off your tape, pull the tape straight back........not straight up. Prior to color coat painting, I'd make sure you don't excessively handle your model when in primer. That's asking for trouble as you're bound to have oils from your skin (or other contaminants) get on the surface. Hope this all helps.

best model car parts

Tommy, I literally just got a set of gauge decals ('67 Coronet) from him the other day. I also happen to have his '57 VW Beetle trans kit which is absolutely EXCELLENT. ? If you check here, this is all the items he's got listed at the moment. -
Thanks for the heads up Tom! I think I'll make plans for a road trip there.........I should have that Shelby Green Hornet model done and ready to roll by then.

This one................ I wanted to build a strictly box stock kit and this was one tough cookie IMO to get together. The Tamiya name notwithstanding, this was no joke to get things to fit correctly and then there were some details I had to leave off altogether just to get it to sit right. Thank goodness I got this at a pretty cheap price (around $40). It had a broken A pillar which I was able to get fixed and I paid nowhere near what these kits can go for whether it's the original Revell or the reboxed Tamiya you see here. Here's the finished result and it's pretty much a safe bet I'll probably not build this again (I have another version of this kit), or simply re-engineer it bumper to bumper if I decide to go full detail which would get rid of a lot of the ill fitting issues.

My Yori doesn't like to be picked up........at least initially. She fusses a bit when you do, then she calms down as I guess she sees it's me and not someone else.
-
That's what was initially turning me off about this kit. While the execution of it is very well done, I can't unsee that way too low windshield header. I do like that they designed the kit to not have those seams on the side.......something not seen on the 1:1. We'll see how it goes. I already have the Heller kit which to my eyes is spot on correct when it comes to the shape. It's just so lacking in other details that it appears "empty" if built straight out of the box.

Bruce, that Cobra is winning me over by the minute! Would look reeeeeall good sitting next to my Shelby. Stay tuned!

Ooh! I'll definitely be watching this one! Just the other day I was eyeing this kit as I have one......even made points on the body where it would need to be lengthened. Never thought about the body being "too short" until someone pointed it out some time back. Yup..........this is another one of those you just don't see on the roads any longer. Hot cars in their day (especially the LSC), but have pretty much disappeared.

OH!! They have a COBRA SC there!! Oh my!! ??
-
Ok...........I see the Jag here. I simply CANNOT resist! I put in to be sent more info as it becomes available. Looks like I've got my hands FULL with 1:8 scales!
-
REALLY?? Oh man..............gotta see about breaking the bank.........some more!
-
Bruce, absolutely FABULOUS! Yes, I HIGHLY recommend this kit to anyone that's into Shelby's and wants to spend the time and money. You're welcome on the doors.......as I mentioned before, I'd love to see them do a '68 GT500 KR convertible. I can betcha they won't be able to keep up with demand!
-
Steve, I've been looking at this WIP with GREAT interest as I have an MPC '68 Coronet Convertible which is in dire need of rescuing. I've gotten pretty much what I need for it now thanks to getting things from Don and Carol before they shut down. I'm soon going to get in touch with Chief Joseph at Fireball to see about getting poverty caps and steelies for it. Keep up the TERRIFIC work and that's a great idea to use the dash out of the Revell kits. I was eyeing original ones on the 'Bay, but the prices always get jacked up too high for my tastes. Better to modify what I already have (I have several junker Daytona kits) and use that. ?

Need my first scribing tool
MrObsessive replied to Venom's topic in Model Building Questions and Answers
Why thanks Josh! That was one of those models I've been wanting to do for a looooong time ever since it came out, but couldn't get past the wonky roofline. Thanks so much for the compliments! I still have the model and it sits quietly in its case AWAY from my nosy cats and dust. -

Oh Ok! Interesting enough, on my photo album for the Impala, I'm no longer seeing the descriptions of the pics. Some time back, Fotki had a change in servers and I wonder if that's why the descriptions are no longer showing up. Here is the thread on the board if you want to read through it. I'm sure the descriptions are there! -

Josh, several years ago I had a running thread on my '59 Chevy Impala WIP where I used the back edge of a #11 blade to open things up. If you check here, the entire build pics are there and you can see what I did. Hope this helps! -
Stripping aftermarket plating
MrObsessive replied to MrObsessive's topic in Model Building Questions and Answers
Thanks a lot Roger! There's a Dollar General literally only four miles from me. On my way home from work tomorrow morning, I'll stop in and see if they have it. I'd go now, but it's snowing here............again. -
Ok......I recently got a resin kit that I have to say the plating on the bumper is-----less than stellar. To my eyes, the plating could stand to be stripped off and redone. I've not tried stripping plating on aftermarket resin parts before......only on factory made plastic kits with much success. Has anyone ever stripped chrome plating off of a resin part and if so, what did you use? Any pitfalls? I thought about using the yellow can Easy Off Oven Cleaner, but I'm not so sure that will do the job effectively without going through a lot of drama. Thanks in advance for any info folks!

I have used this for engraving/deepening panel lines in the past. I've found it to be very handy and a bit more user friendly than other scribing tools out there. -
Airtrax 1/24 Ferrari 330 GTC - The Beauty and the Beast
MrObsessive replied to Italianhorses's topic in WIP: Model Cars
Alex, all I can say is WOW! ? VERY ambitious project you've taken on and I'll have to echo some of your sentiments about the quality of the kit. It wasn't this one I have, but another one I got a while back that was let's say..........less than stellar. Keep up the great work! I'm sure it'll be a sure fire knockout when done and it's yet another Ferrari model that's been very overlooked over the years. -
Here are my three. The orange Manx is Yori. I've had her since she was five months old and she'll be 12 over the summer. Short and fat she is.......she's the "old lady" in the house and no longer the boss as she has to deal with the two younger ones below. These two bad boys here are Strip (on the left) and Chief Big Boy. Strip is almost six and Chief is five. Chief is a BIG boy as he's a tall cat and I swear he weighs about 20 lbs now. Chief is actually the Alpha cat as he bosses the other two around and when it comes time to feeding......the other two will let him eat first, then they join in. Strip can be aggressive towards Yori-----I guess he thinks since she's old he can make her run.

I was very fortunate to win one of these about 20 years ago when my '69 Daytona won best of show back then at NNL East. I still have the kit (with a donor kit) and sometime I'd like to build it. Harold does EXCELLENT work and not long ago, I got a transkit from him to turn the Revell 300 SLR into an "airbrake" car like the one that raced at LeMans in '55.
