Embossing Powder as Carpet
MrObsessive replied to Bridgebuster490's topic in Model Building Questions and Answers
Here are a couple examples of my use of embossing powder........in this case both red. AMT 1967 Mustang............ 1959 Chevy I finished just a few years ago. In this case I wanted a "deeper" red than what came out of the jar and I wanted some of the reflective grains of the powder to be toned down. I airbrushed the body color red (Roman Red) over the embossing powder to do this and this helps in "locking down" the grains so you don't have constant shedding while getting the interior together. -
Monogram 1989 Pontiac Trans Am Turbo 20th Anniversary
MrObsessive replied to polybius's topic in Model Cars
Those three look fantastic! Very nice interior work on the Turbo Trans Am! Those turbos were real BEASTS on the street! I can't remember the last time I've seen one of those as they're just not many of those 3rd gen F bodies out there any longer. -
This looks good from where I sit................? I'm sooo glad they fixed those rear fenders on the four door! One of my pet peeves of the two door hardtop and why I never went ahead and built mine. Hmmm.........someday I might get an extra one of these and do the 'ole roof swap.
-
SUPER gorgeous!! Really like the color............it's sooooo....'50's!
-
EXCELLENT!!! ??

In my tutorial of the glass in this kit, I also addressed the wheels. If you'll take a look below, you'll see what I did with one wheel to get it to look a bit better once mounted. Scroll to the very top of the thread.

Steve, that looks simply terrific! Glad my tips helped you and others that want to tackle this kit. Interesting enough, I've yet to build the one that I used as a guinea pig to do the glass tutorial!
-
Yes! While I'm not a real big fan of this kit, this IS a VERY well done build! Nice, crisp and super clean! That's how I like to see 'em!

1955 Thunderbird colors
MrObsessive replied to unclescott58's topic in Model Building Questions and Answers
Hmmm.........Interesting! That's the first I've heard of a '55 done in 1/25 as a kit. I'd sure like to see an up to date kit of that car as well as a new '57. -
1955 Thunderbird colors
MrObsessive replied to unclescott58's topic in Model Building Questions and Answers
The '55 T-Bird I scratchbuilt (none have ever been kitted in 1/24-1/25 scale), I painted that in "Thunderbird Blue" which as you mentioned is more of a turquoise. Of all the T-Bird colors for that year I actually find that one I like the most maybe because it's so "Fifties". The others aren't bad, but to my eyes they're more run of the mill like colors you'd see on any other car but for maybe the yellow. Here's the one I did many years ago now.............. -
I have this kit and an original MPC builtup, and the taillights look a bit odd to me also. Could be the angle in the shot, but the one I have, I'd like to take mine and turn it into a four door hardtop using the Monogram '64 GTO roof section as a base. It is funny how MPC got that two door hardtop roofline correct as Snake said, but AMT never could get it right no matter which division they modeled! Very nice and clean builtup and one that's not often seen these days.

I'll be watching this one Ray! This along with the coupe is one of my favorite concept cars of the '60's. And yes, this kit can be a pain to build. It didn't get much better with the Lindberg reissues from years ago, but if you take your time they can be quite nice.

1/16 T-Bird Questions
MrObsessive replied to JollySipper's topic in Model Building Questions and Answers
If that 1/16 scale '57 T-Bird is making a comeback and if Round 2 is seeing this..............PLEASE PUT THE KIT IN A STURDY BOX!! EVERY time I see one of these for sale on the 'Bay, the windshield frame is warped beyond belief or snapped off completely! That has a LOT to do with the flimsy boxes they were put in and it's a MAJOR turnoff! I built one years ago and it would be nice to have this one again to go with the couple '55's I have. -
Is anyone else suffering NNL East withdrawal?
MrObsessive replied to 64Comet404's topic in Contests and Shows
Same here...........I had made an effort to take time off to get to the show. Would have taken off Thursday night to have Friday off, and then scheduled Sunday night off for Monday so I wouldn't be wore out from getting back from all the fun. Oh well............I sure hope September won't hold any surprises. The Super September Showdown is also still a go as far as I know, so I hope there's no conflict with that. -
I have to give the folks at D'Agostini credit where credit is due. They did get the body and interior details spot on as far as shape.........but yeah, they could have added more such as throttle linkage for the carbs, brake/fuel lines, emergency brake cable, etc. On the other hand, they wanted to keep this as straightforward I suppose as possible so if the detail is too much to attain, word would spread how difficult the kit is which would hurt sales. But...........they are the ONLY ones that make a 1/8 scale 1967 Shelby Mustang!
-
I want to add David that they do give you a Phillips head screwdriver to use. The screws are self tapping, but I recommend you have some 3 'N' 1 household oil to very lightly oil the screw holes. There are no threads pre-drilled into the body and oiling them will make things easier. Assembly is pretty straightforward, but just like a model kit I strongly recommend test fitting your parts before screwing them together.
-
David, I have the '67 Shelby and if you're going to build the kit right out of the boxes, then yes it's just simple assembly. However, the Shelby to my eyes could stand to have more detail in the engine bay area particularly, as what they give you leaves it too toylike for my tastes. It's been quite awhile since I worked on mine.........as we speak I got another wheel soaking in lacquer thinner as they're painted silver which isn't correct for those Magstar five spokes. Another thing of note and this will depend on how critical of paint you are, the paint itself at least the body panels on my kit could stand a good rubbing out and polishing. I tested this out on the nose of the body, and it will take the polishing, but the stripes do not. They tend to "run" with any use of water on them when rubbed out and I'll just leave those alone. The built thread for mine is here. Hope this helps!

Well, Friday started off Badly. I had to put a dog down.
MrObsessive replied to stavanzer's topic in The Off-Topic Lounge
Alan, so sorry for the loss of your dog. That has to be THE toughest thing to ever do. I have three cats and the oldest one is about 11. I can see her slowing down as she doesn't rip and run like she used to. I try not to think about it, but I know there will come that time I'll have to face it. I agree with Carl........not long after my one cat died years ago, I got another one not very long after. She's the one I mentioned above and it did help. Pets are like members of the family. Those who aren't cat or dog people don't understand that, but they truly are like little kids. -
Some fun eBay weirdness...
MrObsessive replied to Mike999's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
I'm one of those that used to get miffed at seeing old kits get parted out. UNTIL the time came when I needed a hood for a '64 Cutlass after two failed attempts at resin ones. As was said, since the demise of The Modelhaus, you'll be seeing more and more of this. That's the reality of where the hobby is today. No one's getting any younger and resin casters some of them are getting up in years and will eventually retire. Now I don't mind any longer getting parts when I see 'em as getting the resin cast ones is 'bout impossible anymore and then you can end up spending just as much on the cast resin as opposed to the originals. -
Ooooh! That is soooo nice! Another kit I've had for years, but haven't done a thing with it! A couple of these in fact. This one and the one with the hardtop.

Reworking Door Panels.
MrObsessive replied to StevenGuthmiller's topic in Tips, Tricks, and Tutorials
Thanks for posting this Steve! I've had to do this in the past and this tip will come in handy for newbies out there. Frankly I absolutely hate tub interiors and have gone through the trouble of cutting the door panels out. This saves the terrific frustration for me in painting those when the time comes as it's MUCH easier to do. -
Revell 1960 Chevrolet Impala - Factory colour Suntan Copper
MrObsessive replied to RandyB.'s topic in Model Cars
Randy, that is an absolute beauty! And you painted it in one of my favorite colors for 1959-'60. Revell nailed the body lines on this just right compared to their '59 and yours is soooo nice and cleanly built! -
Housebound?
MrObsessive replied to magicmustang's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
Same here. Machine Operator for the company I work for here in Central PA. A LOT of what we do is for the medical industry and in fact, I found out that many of those companies we supply parts for were BEGGING us to stay open in light of all of this. So we do get to stay open as we are definitely "essential". Some have been told to stay home due to either their age, or their overall health issues which includes both for some. Word has it they're going to bring in "outsiders" (family members of those that are home) to help out as we still are very busy. Don't even ask about the stores........fortunately I live in a rural area so it's nowhere near as crazy, but in the city?? Absolute mayhem as HALF if not more than half of the store shelves have been empty. ? -
Steve, absolutely FANTASTIC looking! Very good stance and looks the way it should! CONGRATS!
-
Yup! Those parts layouts look an awful lot like the '67 GT500 I have. I'm sure this will another terrific build from you Bruce! The paint on yours from my end look exceptionally smooth. My kit while very nice, the paint to my eyes is slightly orange peeled. When I get back into full swing building on mine, that will be on the to-do list.........rub out and polish the paint. Keep us posted!
