My 2025 Cannonball Entry 1975 Volkwagen Golf
oldcarfan replied to oldcarfan's topic in WIP: Model Cars
When we lived in Austin, Texas a few years ago, there were four hobby shops and many Hobby Lobbys in the area so I bought a lot of clearance kits when I had the money. Now they are coming in handy. -
My 2025 Cannonball Entry 1975 Volkwagen Golf
oldcarfan replied to oldcarfan's topic in WIP: Model Cars
One step forward after a big fall back. When I was looking for an entry, I pulled the three Golf kits I had. In retrospect, it's lucky I had something to fall back on. The Revell kit is its own tool, and a much more advanced kit. As you can see, the AMT Rabbit is a repop of the original 1970s ESCI kit. The AMT rerelease shows it's age a little. Where the original ESCI body was smooth with no sink marks, the newer release has a sink mark on each corner and some rough patches on the rear hatch that look like maybe the mold had some rust? Anyway, I did some filling and sanding and shot a coat of Duplicolor Sandable primer so we'll see how it goes. As the temperatures are in the 40s, it's going to take some time to dry. -
It takes patience, but cut as closely as you can. I bought a pair of those cheap dollar store reader glasses in the strongest lens they had. It helps a lot. I bought some good quality fingernail scissors both curved and straight from Amazon and they work well. They might be Fiskars, I can't remember. Speaking of Keith Marks decals, are they opaque? I bought some from a different seller on eBay a while back and they let the paint colors show through.

Nice finds! I've had the Cheetah on my watch list for ages but they always sell for too much!

I cast resin parts occasionally but last month I bought a casting kit from Hobby Lobby which is what I've used before, and seem to have had problems. I cast and sand the parts using protection, a mask, avoid dust, etc. and never noticed any issues before, but this time it seems to have caused an allergic reaction. My nose got stuffy within a half hour and I felt like I had a cold for several days. The question, I guess, is there any other type of easily gotten resin that isn't the standard Alumalite type? I don't use enough to buy a large quantity. Any tips appreciated.

My 2025 Cannonball Entry 1975 Volkwagen Golf
oldcarfan replied to oldcarfan's topic in WIP: Model Cars
I guess this was the prompt I needed to order as I've thought about building a VW pickup. I ordered from Hiroboy, but has anyone ordered from C1 before? They sometimes have some pretty cool stuff in stock. -

Has anyone used Etsy for kits and parts? I did some online shopping last night for period correct 1975 Cannonball items and they had some pretty good prices on 3D printed stuff. I ordered a Stanley thermos, some binoculars, a camera, cassette recorder, flashlight, and some other things in 1/24th scale to use for interior details. In the meantime, I managed to draw out what looks like a viable turbo intercooler setup for the engine. I need to start searching the parts pile for pieces to get it done. -
2025 Cannonball Run - 50 years since the 1975 run.

Being a Corgi, Bernie is too short to reach things without her partner in crime, so at least that's something! Yeah, I got the shop warmed up this morning to start prepping the AMT body, but I just don't have the ambition right now. That was about the best paint job I've done in a while and it took the wind out of my sails. Maybe I can make a new start tomorrow. -

'Tis but a scratch. I have news and it's not the best. I was working in the shop and decided to come into the house for a minute. Absentmindedly I brought my Golf with me. I set it on the kitchen counter and went into the other room. When I came back the Golf was missing. After a few minutes of wondering if I was losing my mind, I looked for suspects. I narrowed the search to Fia, the cat and then searched some more. I found it in the backyard in this condition. I now have a scenario where Fia knocked it off the counter and our Corgi puppy took it out and chewed it up. Both suspects say they have alibis, so the investigation continues. It kind of wrecked my day, but I've pulled the AMT Rabbit kit off the shelf which is a reissue of the ESCI kit. I may have to find another can of Go Mango paint, though. Tomorrow I'll start prepping the second body. In trying to make something good of a bad situation, I just ordered the VW Caddy pickup conversion kit from Hiroboy. Should have it in a couple weeks and I'll try to use it with the leftover part from the second Golf kit. -

Welp, things went sideways on my build. I was working on my build in the shop and had to come into the house for something. Absentmindedly, I brought the body with me and set it on the kitchen counter. Coming back, I couldn't find it. After a few minutes of wondering if I'd lost my mind, I noticed Fia the cat sitting nearby looking pleased with herself. Searching some more I found the Golf in the backyard in the pictured condition. Evidence in hand, my theory is that Fia knocked it off on the floor and Bernie grabbed it and took it outside for chomping. The suspects claim to have alibis, but they are shaky. Lesson learned, never trust a cat on the counter and a Corgi puppy. Luckily, I have the AMT Rabbit kit which is a reissue of the ESCI kit, but it's definitely knocked me for a loop. Now if I have enough Go Mango paint left. In trying to make the best of the situation, I just now ordered the VW Caddy pickup conversion kit from Hiroboy. Should have it in a couple weeks and I'll try to use it with the leftover part from the second Golf kit. -

Looking good! -
I love what you did with this kit! Revell really did a good job on these kits. The tuner parts are a little over the top for these days, but they sure looked good back when things were fast and furious.

Small progress is still progress, so I did some parts prep getting off flash and I've been doing some research into the 70s tech and looking at how Porsche and others were experimenting with turbocharging and intercooling. Looks like the Polar Vortex is paying a visit so it'll be interesting to see if my new shop heater is up to the task. -
My oldest builds from around 1994 or so. I bought a six NASCAR kits from a Kaybee Toys that was clearing out and built them in series. I got bored and bought JNJ decals to switch things up. These are the only ones to survive and I'm kind of proud of them.

It's a nice change of pace to see a non-Trans Am Firebird. It would be nice to see Round 2 rerelease the MPC Trans Am as a Formula and maybe even as a flat hood base model.

Some are, but most I've seen are pretty much unassembled promos. Just judging from this GT90 and from the recent AMT Chevy truck, they are simple but look accurate.

A couple of freebies today. They were in a junk pile. The boxes have been wet and the parts will need to be washed, but it looks like everything is there. What's funny is last year I wanted to buy a GT90 but gave up because eBay was too expensive.

What did you see on the road today?
oldcarfan replied to Harry P.'s topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
Saw a Kia Amanti today for the first time in a long time in traffic and then at a store. This one was spotless, no dents, and the paint and interior looked brand new. Not a car you see very often anymore. Just proof that rarity doesn't always equal high prices. -
This is the start of my 2025 Cannonball entry. I'm using an old ESCI Golf Rally kit that I got from a now closed hobby shop. Just an FYI, it seems this is the same kit that was released by AMT a few years back. When I opened the box, it seems I had painted it gray and then put it back in the box. The paint was smooth but cracked so I polished it a couple weeks ago. I've been sick for two weeks now with something that isn't COVID, but won't go away. Anyway, today I pulled out the last can of Model Master Go Mango that hasn't sprung a leak on the bottom. It went on nicely, and I so wish Testor's would get their act straight and reintroduce their Model Master line! With the body painted, I won't be quite so tied to the weather so maybe I can get started on the engine.
