Mustang 60's fastback question
oldcarfan replied to GLMFAA1's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
You could get any body style with either a 6 or 8. Depended on how much money you had.... -
I recently read that Tesla was originally considering calling their car the Model T. T in that case being for Tesla and Ford jumped all over them. So they called it the Model S.

We moved to Austin in May. Going from a house with garage to a small apartment means it will be a good long while until I am in a position to build anything so I thought I would share this idea with you guys. I can't seem to post a picture so I've included a link to it. http://www.retronaut.com/2014/01/playboy-land-yacht/ It would make an interesting project. Not sure what area to post it so I put it here in General.

I may be a masochist, but.....
oldcarfan posted a topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
Confession time; I have a soft spot, possibly in my head, for the old crappy multi-piece Lindberg and Palmer kits of the 60's and 70's. In my defense, my love for them is tied in with memories of my grandma's five and dime store rather than the kits themselves. She always had those kits on the shelf and would give me one to keep me quiet. My uncle also would build them and give them to me. I don't have any of them anymore, but would buy and build some if I came across them. Does anyone have any of these that they have built or are they mostly curiosities now that are put on a shelf for the box art? -
There don't seem to be too many, but I have been going to a few for a while. For something kind of similar to the ModelCarsMag forums http://www.boat-links.com/ or http://modelshipwrights.kitmaker.net/modules.php?op=modload&name=SquawkBox&file=index is good. http://www.rcgroups.com/scale-boats-55/ is for R/C boats. http://www.taubmansonline.com/ has plans for scratch-building. Hope this gives you a start!

You may have seen this before, but it was new to me. Thought I'd share. For fans of old short track racers, this article has some good detail on how the full size cars were built. http://www.dirtfans.com/RebirthofaGIANT.html

Plastic vs. diecast
oldcarfan replied to oldcarfan's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
Could be the market is bigger. I wish that if nothing else the diecast makers would do like Revell and release their stuff in plastic too. There is so much cool stuff out there. -
Is the body from the Monogram 37 Ford flatback or is that a resin body? Sounds like a great project!

After going through various online catalogs I am left with one question. Why is there such variety in diecast 1/24 model companies? Is it simply that the detail and subsequent development cost is less so they can produce more products? I bought a 1940 Plymouth pickup and have seen many other obscure vehicles that I would love to see as kits, detailed or curbside.

1941 WILLYS AMERICAR GASSER 1/18 diecast- back to stock
oldcarfan replied to f1ford48's topic in Diecast Corner
Love this.Nice to see one of these that's not a gasser! Wonder if anyone makes a conversion for the 1/25th ones too? -
Other modelling genres
oldcarfan replied to racedriver25's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
I am on modeling hiatus since a move to an apartment. Everything is in storage. However when I can build it is usually 1/25th cars or pickups. I do scratch-build 20's and 30's speedboats too, at least as long as my supply of mahogany lasts! It's getting harder to find. -
Resin casting parts - legal?
oldcarfan replied to Jantrix's topic in Model Building Questions and Answers
My friend would by what copies of copies. He did Indiana gold idols and such and then sold them on e-Pay and places like that. Looking through old model magazines leads to nostalgia which leads to the "If only I had bought that." It just seems sad to lose all those neat products from Ron and others. -
Resin casting parts - legal?
oldcarfan replied to Jantrix's topic in Model Building Questions and Answers
I had an acquaintance a while back who made money re-popping old sci-fi resin from other producers. He said that since the original producers weren't around anymore so he didn't see a problem. I was looking some old model car magazines and this started me wondering what becomes of the masters and molds for all the resin car companies that have come and gone over the years. Would it be considered ethical to re-pop something that hasn't been produced in a long time if the original producer is no longer around? Is it any different than re-popping an old kit from AMT or Revell? Maybe if you gave credit to the original producer? I understand that people get burned out after a while and close up their companies, but there are so many things that I wasn't interested in way back when, that I wish I now had. -
I love wagons, especially ones built to stock specs. Great work!!

Love the whole concept!

Remember Cadillac was all but dead 15-20 years ago, making crappy front-wheel drive cars that were bought by retirees. Lincoln can survive, but Ford will have to make a commitment the way GM did with Cadillac. Now Cadillac is starting to be seen as a possible alternate to Mercedes or BMW. No more warmed over Fords, they have to be willing to invest in RWD platforms and make them stand out. Also as has been already mentioned, the letter names were an idea that didn't work. They need to give them real names again.

I too go for the Chevette. My mom bought one in 1980. I guess she had a thing for weird vehicles. She later traded it in on an Aerostar. She got the Chevette because they were giving two airline tickets to anywhere in the continental US with every purchase. My parents use the tickets to fly to Seattle and then go see Mt. St. Helens not too long after it blew.

Thrift store score! What have you found?
oldcarfan replied to clovis's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
I have yet to find any models at thrift stores, but I did once fine the Fujimi? GT40 kits at a chain toy store that were clearanced at 40%. i grabbed several of them and when I went to check out the lady gave me an additional 40% off coupon on that of that. Oh happy day! -
You can go to this site: http://www.tcpglobal.com/aclchip.aspx?image=1964-Ford-pg05.jpg and it has color chips. There may be some variation due to being on a screen, but if you put it on your smart phone or print it out and take it to the store, it should get you pretty close. I have used Duplicolor quite a bit. I found that a lot of the GM colors came close. I don't have the cans anymore, but there was a GM color that matched Vintage Burgundy quite closely and I also found a pretty close match for the 1962 Ford light green in GM colors.

Shelby Movie? Let the nightmare begin!
oldcarfan replied to Daddyfink's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
There are certain actors who I just avoid to save time. My rule of thumb is that if Tom Cruise or John Travolta is in it, I can skip it. Haven't missed out as far as I can tell. -
what's it take? concept to package?
oldcarfan replied to tbill's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
I don't think that 3d printing will push the companies out of business. I think it more likely that it will be more of a supplement, filling the niches the way that resin manufacturers do now. -

oldcarfan replied to tbill's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
I have a feeling that 3d printers will eventually become as common as regular printers are now. I also have a feeling that the hobby will move to an open source kind of thing where skilled hobbyists will design a file for a particular car or tank or something and make it available for free download. Maybe we need to start a Napster for modelers!
