Opinions needed. Opening doors
BKcustoms replied to freakshow12's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
I'd say if its easy then open both doors but if its not then just do one so you don't have to rush it. -
FnF Supra FULL DETAIL build ALL DONE! In Under Glass
BKcustoms replied to Kennyboy's topic in WIP: Model Cars
Very nice work! I'll definitely be following this one. -
Good point Fred, I think that would make more sense than painting it all separately. I can do that while Carlos paints the suspension pieces and then send it all back to him for him to assemble the chassis. Would that be o.k.?
-
Thanks James and Larry! I finished the frame and painted it semi gloss black. Thanks for looking and as always comments welcome. Billy

Here's the colors I've mixed so far, I can easily tint them if needed. #1 is a little darker than in the pics and #3 is slightly greener and darker than #2. with flash on: With flash off: Oh and I vote for the floor being body color with semi gloss clear.

custom air brushing.......

What kind of stripes are they? -
I have a color mixed, I'll try to get some spoons painted tomorrow and post pics. Has it been decided if the chassis will be body color or undercoating? If its body color I can paint it and send it back to Carlos for the suspension.

Thanks guys! Here's a peek at the paint scheme I'll be doing on it.

Here's a project I started a while ago that I recently brought back to the bench. I started with a body from Competition Resins and a Ross Gibson Pro Mod Hemi engine kit. The chassis is scratchbuilt from evergreen rod and sheet styrene. I'll be clearing off the bench to focus on this as soon as I finish some customer projects so I'll have updates soon.

Looking great so far! I can't wait to see more. -
I'm planning on a paintjob that will require masking and spraying graphics over stainless steel metalizer. The problem I'm having is the tape seems to polish the metalizer when I remove it. Should I just clear over it before taping or is there some kind of trick I don't know about?? Any help is appreciated! Billy

Tom, I glad the tutorial was helpful. I can't wait to see what you do on the 41! James, I'm using Tamiya tape cut into thin strips using two xacto blades put side by side into one knife.

Lowrider Roof Pattern tutorial
BKcustoms replied to BKcustoms's topic in Tips, Tricks, and Tutorials
A lot of people don't believe it but I've pretty much taught myself how to do paint jobs like this by watching videos and reading lots of articles online. Oh and of course lots of trial and error.. -
Lowrider Roof Pattern tutorial
BKcustoms replied to BKcustoms's topic in Tips, Tricks, and Tutorials
Thanks guys!! I'm glad this was helpful. Now to answer some of the questions, This whole thing took around 4 hours from when I started taping to the last coat of clear. I'm using fast drying urethanes so I only have to wait 5-10 minutes between colors, dry times will be different with different paints. I'll add a list of materials to the first post. -
Thank you all for the great comments! I really appreciate them! The tutorial is up. I wasn't able to make a video so I did a step by step with pictures. http://www.modelcarsmag.com/forums/index.php?showtopic=84271

That turned out great! I like the colors.

Lowrider Roof Pattern tutorial

Now we’re ready to add some color. Mask off the first section with a low tack tape so you don’t pull off your lines when you unmask it and then spray some color. I used Lava Red Pearl with kandy red sprayed along the edges. Here it is unmasked. Make sure you wait until the paint is completely dry before you mask for the next color. Here I’ve masked for the next section. This will have a candy red marble effect. To do this spray a very wet coat of candy paint and press a wadded up rubber glove into it. You can also spray a coat of candy over it to make it darker. Now it’s time to do a fade in the area on the back of the roof. Just mask the area and spray some color around the edge of the tape. Now we’ll move to the front of the roof and do a “sunrise” effect. It’s actually pretty simple, just stick a piece of tape at an angle from the center of the section to the outside edge and spray along its edge. Rotate the tape and repeat until you’ve made it all the way around. For the stripes that run down the roof I sprayed a fade from red to orange candy. I prefer to start with the lighter color for this but it’ll work either way. Now for the outside edges I did another marble effect in orange and sprayed an orange fade along the edge of the roof. (For some reason the pictures of this step have disappeared from my camera) Now for the fun part! Unmask it and see what you’ve got! (this picture was actually taken after 4 coats of clear were applied) -
A few people have been asking about how to do this so I figured a tutorial would be helpful to explain it. The starting point will be Revell's 60' Impala kit and it will be getting a candy orange and red pattern on the roof. Materials used: Tamiya tape cut into narrow strips Kustom Shop Kandy Red, Kandy Orange, Lava Red Pearl, and Brilliant Silver Metallic Wadded up rubber glove for the textured sections Nason Select Clear 2K Urethane Here the body has been base coated with pearl white and the roof masked off in preparation for the silver base that will be used for the candy. Now spray the roof with a silver or gold base of your choice. (I used Brilliant Silver Metallic from Kustom Shop) Once that dries you can start the taping process. Start by finding the center line and then lay out a design. I prefer to start in the middle and work my way to the outer edges.

Scale Tabs and Brackets - À la carte!?
BKcustoms replied to DirtModeler's topic in Car Aftermarket / Resin / 3D Printed
I think this is a great idea, I constantly find myself needing to buy a fret of parts just for one or two tabs that I need. This will be a perfect solution to my problem! -
I've been playing around with mixing the right blue for this. I'll post some pics as soonas I get a couple of spoons painted.

Very clean work. I'll definitely be following this one!

Here's the unstarted pic of my firebird. I'm currently trying to stuff lots NASCAR parts underneath it. I still need to decide on a powerplant, right now I'm considering a Ross Gibson Chevy stock car engine.

Drone delivery is just around the corner. Ummmm hmmmm.
BKcustoms replied to Ace-Garageguy's topic in The Off-Topic Lounge
I hope the drones don't come down too low to drop the packages. I could see my dogs trying to catch/attack one.
