Wow DA, a man after my own heart. I love accurate builds! Looks great so far, love the tin work. Body looking good also! -
What a cool project, this is gonna be cool!

A very cool project Marty, I too have accumulated parts to do this same build, so I’m curious how this come out. Excellent work!

Thank you Carl

Great build, you don’t see many of theses built.

Looks great, that ones on my build list also.

Thank you! I tried to replicate what they actually did on the real car back in 72. I used the AMT 71 Duster Kit, I removed the rear frame rails with the backside of an XActo knife, narrowed it, glued it back to the floor pan, and scratch built the floor and tubs. I also scratch built front spindles to get the front end lower.

Very cool project…..

Thanks Bob, I learned a lesson.

Thanks Terry!

David, it’s pretty much all listed in work in progress, but simply it’s an original MPC 71 Demon body and hood,AMT 71 Duster chassis and interior, with lots of modifications.

Thanks Jimmy!

Thanks Bob! I wish I could run it by the garage and show it to ya!

Thanks Rory, Tim always does an amazing job covering events, if your not already following Throttle Power, you should! I’m not sure if you could hear the dialogue but I really wanted to take something new to the show, but this is the only Kit I have worked on all year. You really need your model to stand out when your competing with over 800 models and I wanted a base for my build. My daughter and I kicked around some ideas and I didn’t have time to do the base, so she volunteered and it came out great. It was her first time working with gold leaf and hand lettering, I really appreciate her help !

Thanks Scott! Hey just do it, get started on those old pro stocks, they were so cool back then!
-
Thanks Jeff, I rushed it in the end, I should have just waited and corrected the issues I was having, a year is a long time, and I came close to putting it back in the box more than once, so your not alone.
-
Thanks Rich, it looks good, just fell short of my expectations. I’ll probably build a couple out of the box before I tackle another major project.
-
Thanks Bob, I’m probably a little over it. I’m noticing a pattern where I dislike most of my builds in the end, I probably spend way too much time on them.

THE GOOD, THE BAD, AND THE UGLY Where do I start ? The Good, I made it to the ACME Southern Nationals Show. The Bad. After test fitting everything 100 times when I started the final assembly nothing fit, stuff broke multiple times, I ended up having to make a new rear axle assembly and ladder bars, I had to scrap my coil over shock system. In the end It ended up reflecting more of what the original car had. I messed up the Molotow finish on the rear wheels, stripped them in rubbing alcohol, the alcohol reacted to the resin and they deformed. I had no others and just had to resprayed them, they are rough looking compared to my first go round. My fender aprons only fit one side, I guess I didn’t take into consideration the oil tank, so they were left off. I’ve always struggled with fuel lines and I thought I could get them on this one but that just turned into a Super Glue nightmare, I pulled them off in the end. I couldn’t get the braided oil lines to stay together, so they were left off. The coil was to mount to the right fender liner, but without the liner no place to mount the coil, I didn’t get to make rear shocks, or any Rack and pinion steering parts. I had to rework the headers, as the motor won’t sit straight, the oil pan popped off while trying to get it in the way it fit during the trial fit. I’m ashamed to admit I just glued the oil pan on straight and left the motor crooked. I forgot to add the hood pins, and on and on! The Ugly, I’ve never been so frustrated with a build, I came close to gluing the hood shut and making it a curbside. My hopes were to do my most detailed build and perhaps get a top ten award. After a year working on this I pushed to complete this and I’m disappointed in myself in getting caught up with taking something new to this show and completing the car as I did. It’s a three footer, looks great from three feet away. I would almost have to start over to correct all that dislike, I think I’ll just put it in the display case as a reminder to take my time don’t rush and keep my pride in check.
