Vintage Kit Review: AMT's Other 1/25th '57 Thunderbird
rmvw guy replied to John Goschke's topic in Car Kit News & Reviews
This thread got me out of my seat to go compare the three I have built. For me the top is the biggest issue, now I want the Jr. kit. Could someone please cast these tops? The hub caps with the script are also pretty nice. The first issue I had back in the early '60s got heavily customized and not in a good way. I remember the windshield being a big problem for me, as they usually were on convertibles. I think this one probably got torched. I still have some small parts for it I think. -
Here is my suggestion. Help them build all you want. If they have an interest to watch you build, do it for them. They will learn by watching you. When they want to try let them try. Show them all the skills you have learned. When it comes time for a contest let them build that one on their own. Now everything is perfectly legal. When my son played little league, I provided everything I could for him and drove him anywhere necessary I practiced with him every chance I got. When it came time to play he was on his own. When he wanted to build models I did the same for him. I would have done this for any activity HE chose, not me.

Nice model! Looks like a lot of bare metal foil, nice work.

Neat stuff but, I don't have a clue. Thanks for starting this one, hope to see more.

Anyone Have A Sleep Number Bed? Waaaay OT !
rmvw guy replied to Tom Geiger's topic in The Off-Topic Lounge
We have a sleep by number bed and love it! It's the king size model, does not recline. My wife ordered it from QVC. We had tested one at a sleep by number store and loved it but, thought it was way too expensive. I think she paid about $600. The special sheets are for the reclining model and are quite expensive because they have to split about half way up. We use normal sheets. Our sleep numbers are way different. I have had back problems for most of my life and the bed helps ease this problem. I like the fact that the whole bed is light weight and can be moved around with ease. The mattress is basically an air mattress and therefore easy to keep clean without the worry of dust mites or bed bugs. lol That's just the way I think. We have been sleeping on ours for several years with no problems. Previously we had owned over eight different mattresses none as good as this one. I am sold on sleep by number! I do not own any stock in the company, I swear. -
Wife home all three days so, what ever she wants to do. Work on house most likely, thinking about models.

Lot's of variety here. The one in the second picture is what I remember. I also remember them being called "dumps" or "plugs". I always thought the ones with the cable would be fun. Sometimes you just want to make noise!!! Especially when you are young. I still like open headers and high octane fumes even now that I am old.

Little Known Car Facts #2 Lake Pipes (Lakes Pipes)
rmvw guy replied to Greg Myers's topic in The Off-Topic Lounge
Factory cut-outs who knew? Very Cool! Great information about the SCTA's role in all this too. Now I want some cut-outs for my VW. My muffler came loose once from a little connector and gave me some fun one night. -
Little Known Car Facts #2 Lake Pipes (Lakes Pipes)
rmvw guy replied to Greg Myers's topic in The Off-Topic Lounge
I always thought they were called "cut-outs" or "plugs" unless they went down the sides of the car and out. Then came headers with side pipes like the yellow Deuce. Lake pipes always seemed to come with all the early AMT kits. I always associate them with fender skirts and giving your car a custom low look. A big time custom look of the late '50s. I remember fake lake pipes that didn't even connect to the exhaust. These were found in the JC Whitney catalog. If they have anything to do with the lakes, I would only guess it was due to the sound they would make when opened and driving by a lake. The dry lakes? Maybe the "cut-outs". I always liked the "cut-outs" and put them on all my early models until headers became popular. Thanks for posting this subject it got me going a little. -
Lost that building desire........... again !

I have always enjoyed seeing your builds. You maybe needed a break? I have been down all Summer with three old Fords in a box I was working on at once. Maybe a little too ambitious? Anyway, I am side tracked with a home remodel project. Can't wait to get back. It helps me looking on here a few minutes every day just as a reminder of how much I love this hobby. -
Beautiful, Just like the box art! Makes me wonder why I never did that. Very COOL!

Favorite smells in the shop
rmvw guy replied to chunkypeanutbutter's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
Paint always has smelled like perfume to me. I have always loved the smell of new rubber in a tire store or better yet at the drag strip. This sounds like a confession thread to me. lol Yeah seriously. -
Nice looker. I mean, make you look twice.

Nice version of a '37. Great paint and perfect stance.

Great job James, I love it!!! The plow is a work of art by it's self and I really do love the truck. Great weathering and detail. I hope what ever is going on in your life gets better so you can enjoy building some more. I am on temporary hold because of a home remodel project. Can't wait to get my life back and build some more models. Looking on here at the great work of others helps. -

This is just a neat little truck! Would I love to own something like this? YES!!!! Very Cool! -
Tulio, Just wondering if the stripes on the driveshaft were a factory mark, if so what did they signify? I love to here about your research on Fords, you are the man!
