Specific questions about the late 70s early 80s
Jim B replied to youpey's topic in Model Building Questions and Answers
I'm not sure about the construction of the raft oars (probably wood), but I don't think people typically wore life vests or helmets back then. Heck, most people didn't even wear seatbelts. -
AMT Mack Cruise-Liner

Nice progress. I like the blue. -
Thanks for the offer, Richard; but I'm all set at this time.

That's what I was looking for. Thanks!

Am I imagining things, or was some clever resin caster planning on making the correct dash for the AMT Kenworth K100 Aerodyne kits? I seem to recall something about this, but maybe not.

New Ford email announcement...
Jim B replied to BlackSheep214's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
That's funny! I don't think Ford will do that, though. The Pinto got such a bad rap back in the 1970s that Ford will probably do just about anything to distance themselves from that name. Kind of like Chevrolet and the Vega. -

Apparently Atlantis will be reissuing this 2nd Quarter of 2021: Atlantis2021CatalogWeb4.pdf - Google Drive (it's on Page 7). I wonder if this means they have the dump & tanker tools. -

When I paint my truck frames, I generally go with a Semi-Gloss Black, if I'm doing black. I know from the factory, truck frames are painted gloss colors, but I figure that they probably don't get "washed & waxed" as often as the cabs. Matching blue would look great. -

Well, I'd say you're off to a good start. I built this back in 2011, and I looked through my pics to see if I had any of the engine out of the frame. I don't. So you know, Tamiya Gold Leaf X-12 is a good match for Mack Gold. -
Carl, didn't someone write a song about that? "It's just my imagination". RRR, yes, models are probably less expensive than 1:1 hot rods, and they definitely take up less space.

Nicely done. For a minute there I thought that you might have painted it in black & white to match the TV show. Then I realized that they were black & white photos.

I like it. Well done.

Brian, I hear you on the "more inspiration than time"!
-
Greg, I had forgotten about White Line Fever. Carol Jo and his "Blue Mule". I actually have decals for the "Blue Mule". I just need a Ford W-Series cab! Pete, box-art is also an inspiration for me at times, but sometimes it's not. Just depends on the kit & the art, I guess. It sounds like people are drawing inspiration from all sorts of places, and that's really cool. My problem is that my inspiration comes from all sorts of sources, which is a good problem to have I guess. For example, I am correctly reading Spearhead by Adam Makos, so now I want to build a T26/M26 Pershing tank & a M4 Sherman tank. When I read To Wake a Giant by Jeff Shaara, I wanted to build the USS Arizona: and I'm sure when I read The Eagle's Claw, I'll want to build a carrier. I've even started building/collecting some of the cars from Cars. I think I have enough "inspiration" to last me until the next century.

So, just as a general question: where do you draw your inspiration for your builds from? Since I brought it up, I'll go first. When I first got back into modeling, and truck modeling in particular, back in 2000 or so, I was a member of the Yahoo! Model Truck Discussion Group. Anyone here remember that? At that time I drew inspiration from the other modeler on the Group, and Tim Ahlborn specifically. Hey, I'm not afraid to admit it, I was seriously impressed with his builds! Another inspiration for my truck builds was Hank's Truck Pictures (R.I.P., ?), which was a Black Hole of Time, but there were a lot of great photos of trucks on there that would keep a builder busy for about a century! I also drew some inspiration from TV shows (Movin' On) & movies (Smoky & the Bandit). There were also a couple of ProBoards Forums that I belonged to were I got some ideas. More recently, I have branched out into cars, aircraft, & ships. Inspiration for these can come from a wide variety of sources like songs (G.T.O. by Ronny & the Daytonas), books, TV shows (Dukes of Hazzard), and of course fellow modelers on the Forum. It was a friend & fellow modeler that got me interested in muscle car builds. Ok, I shared. Who's next? Where do you draw your inspiration?

A tale of two trailers
Jim B replied to Rockford's topic in WIP: Model Trucks: Big Rigs and Heavy Equipment
Your trailers look great. And you tractors, too! -
It's this another case of Revell putting a 379 on the box, but a 359 in the box?
