Auto World Model Kit Collector’s Club
cartpix replied to Jimmy Wilson's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
I already have a hard time, keeping from adding, to my vast collection of unbuilt kits. Now they want me to sign up, to have kits, sent straight to my house? I'm thinking, not. Do they give you a chance to opt out, if you don't like the kit(s) of the month? -
Need to decide how to do chrome trim
cartpix replied to SpencerC's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
The paint pulling up, may be from the paint not getting enough "bite" into the body. Did you sand the body, before you painted it? Did you use primer? If so, did you sand the primer? -
H.B. Halicki original gone in 60 seconds
cartpix replied to MsDano85gt's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
I drove up the hill, that they jumped the Mustang off, it the original movie. I have friends that were at the jump. When they were filming, I was at the Cadillac dealer, after they slid it, into the row of Caddies. -

I agree, Robberbaron, 2 lane wasn't the best car flick. Hollywood Knights, on the other hand... -
Too many projects going on.

I think I see a pattern, here. I'm a long roof lover, myself, especially if the sides are blanked off. -

I have 3 going, right now. I like to have at least 2 going, at any given time. I work on 1 for awhile, put it in the box, pull out another, work on it, etc., etc. This way, I don't get bored & put them, in the box, & on the shelf. It also gives me something, to work on, while paint cures. -
Yes. I even impulse by, in my head. When someone posts a picture of the next quarter's kit releases, I think, I want one of those, 2 of those, & 1 of another.

Where do you build?
cartpix replied to Arbatron's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
I have a hobby room, that used to be our guest room. One of our daughters moved out, so we have a guest room, again. -
Kits you have, that you will never build
cartpix replied to BLOODBANE's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
I have over 300 kits, I build an average of 3 a year, I'm 57 years old, you do the math. I intend to build, more, when I retire, so if I crank out 1 a week, I might be able to pull it off. I need to start building more out of the box and less of outside the box. -
I have to agree with Harry & Andy, on this one. It's not a significant car. I don't think any of the parts could be used, in a restoration. It would be like the story of my Gand Daddy's axe. Since he died, the handle has been replaced 3 times & the head replaced once, but it's my Gand Daddy's axe.

Looks great. What kind of fur, did you use, in the interior.

What kit are the headers from?

Awesome. Great color & I love the frenched tail lights.

It's not the cost, it's the value :)
cartpix replied to Howard Cohen's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
I think the original idea, of this thread was, the value of the hobby, not the price. The pleasure & relaxation, I get from it, is well worth the money, I put into it. It has taught me patience & takes me away from the stress & pressures of day to day life. An added bonus, a well built model, gives me a feeling of accomplishment & boosts my self esteem. My hobby room, is almost a fantasy world. A place where I can "get away from it all". I build cars, that I like, the way that I like them. There are no rules or laws. As for the price, of the hobby, I don't want to sound insensitive, but if the hobby is too expensive, get a cheaper hobby. Some people collect classic cars, real ones. I can't afford that, so I don't participate, in that hobby. Collect Hot Wheels. They're a buck a piece. I've got a couple thousand, myself. I am fortunate enough, to have collected more kits, than I can ever build. But they keep coming out with new ones, that I want. So the collection grows. -
I have built coil over shocks, with aluminum tubing. I use the brass rod, that fits into the smallest aluminum tube, into the next size tube, etc., until I get the size, I want, for the shock body & leave the rod long to trim, to length later. Then I cut a sliver of the next size, for the bottom of the spring to sit. I use the same tube, into tube method, of all the sizes to make the top. The rod ends are HO scale hand rail stantions, I bought, years ago. I wound the springs with phone wire.

Both, actually. One of my pet peeves is out of scale stuff, like spark plug wires, hoses, roll bars, etc. Your fuel line looks to be about 1 inch. Factory fuel lines are usually 5/16 or 3/8 inch. For a Dominator, on a big block, you'd increase it to 1/2 inch. Here's a picture for comparison.
-
Great color, very shiny, I love the wheels, & the stance, screams 70's street racer. Only one criticism, the fuel line is too big. Other than that, one awesome build.

This weekend, I was trying to blow off a couple pieces of plastic dust, on the inside of a windshield of an assembled model. I had the can, at a bad angle & it sprayed some of the liquid propellant, on the glass. It fogged it but I thought it would evaporate, like it does, on everything else. It didn't. It was fogged worse than CA glue. I crossed my fingers, squirted some Future on a Q-Tip, & swabbed the inside of the glass. Luckily it worked but I'll never do that again.

General Concern About Kit Leaf Springs
cartpix replied to Skydime's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
High octane, you beat me to it. Possibly, they think that shackle are pretty easy to scratch build & leave it up to the builder. Model car chassis have been evolving, through the years. They have gone from molded in front / rear suspension & exhaust, with metal axles, to molded front suspension, rear end with springs & exhaust molded to it with metal axles, to all separate parts, including front suspension. Molded in shackles would be out of scale, to make it sturdy enough, & avoid warpage. I think, that the lack of in scale shackles out weighs a flimsy, fragile, misaligned suspension, & the possibility that all 4 tires don't touch the ground. I'm thinking there would be more complaining about that, then there would be, for a small detail that would seen, only if the model were displayed, upside down. It hard to second guess model companies. -
Beautiful work.

It looks even better, assembled. I'm glad you decided to quit fussing over the flaws. Don't sweat the small stuff, on your first build. Buy more kits & do better, on the next one. With all you've spent, on equipment, it's too late to quit, now.

It looks pretty good, in yellow. I recently built that kit, in metallic orange. I had the same body to frame issues. It's like 5 pounds of "stuff" in a 3 pound bag. I ended up with a bigger hood gap, in the front, than I wanted, but I can live with it. Bare metal foil isn't the easiest thing, to master.
