Your biggest blunder
Tom Geiger replied to LL3 Model Worx's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
Did you find it the next day? ? -
Nice work! One of my favorite kits to play with. Beware that there are a ton of sink marks etc.. like the length of the frame rails. Onto the fun part.. the kit builds with a removable body… and nearly every 20-30s body in 1/24 and 1/25 fits on it! Maybe build it with two switcher bodies? ?

What you should’ve done… buy a restorable 1:1 Beetle. As it’s being dropped in the driveway and your wife complains, just say, “Honey you wanted me to build you a pink VW!” “Oh! You meant a model car? Oops! Too late!

Ball sports have no interest for me, I’m a car guy through and through!

Shortening a Hasegawa VW Delivery Van
Tom Geiger replied to PatW's topic in Model Building Questions and Answers
Pat, look at the roof to see if there is any taper, front to back. I’ve shortened Dodge vans and although the roof looks flat, once apart I discovered the ends didn’t line up. Good luck, post pictures! -
No, they don’t own any manufacturing sites, it’s all contracted out. I’ve noticed the new very detailed tool kits come from Poland and those have the tape dots. The kits sourced from China have the traditional shrink wrap. Another theory is that they have a boxing facility separate from the actual manufacturing. Bag kits have been shipped in the past, because they are taxed as “unfinished goods” at a lower rate.

Probably has to do with what facility they sourced the kit from.

Need help, what to do? Paint related.

Agreed Steve! I pretty much use Tamiya and Duplicolor with some Testors for small items and interiors. Awhile back I was building my 50 Ford Jitney pickup and couldn’t find a good yellow.. then I saw the perfect tone in some Walmart spray can. What a nightmare! It was slow to dry, I was waiting up to a week between coats and then I’d get some curling in odd spots for no apparent reason. I had too much time into the model to quit so I suffered on with 4-5 times the work I should’ve done. Then I tossed the 1/2 full can so I wouldn’t forget and try it again!? -
Nice work! Not a mark in the bodywork!

What did you see on the road today?
Tom Geiger replied to Harry P.'s topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
I had a 1965 Barracuda for a long time. Way back when they got little respect.. I remember taking mine to the show at Englishtown Raceway Park in the mid 1980s and was told to get that Valiant outta there! I garaged it until late 1990s and was surprised at how many people enjoyed it! Times change -
I had a Corolla like that for a day or two! Back in 1979 my first apartment was the former maids quarters in a gentleman’s farm. A rusty yellow 4 door was sitting next to the barn. Landlord told me a former tenant left it sitting there when it quit. He told me I could have it since he hadn’t got around to having it towed away. Two days later I had it running and driving around the farm! I came home one night and it was gone! Turns out that landlord sold it to the mailman! No integrity there!

Yup, whether or not it’s your house!

Um no.. insurance companies have a Covid exclusion clause now. In short, I like my house! You can have the guy making statements like the above quote, he dies a few weeks after the show and his relatives will sue the venue and the hosts.

Has anyone seen my photo etch cutters?

Nice to see someone using the Cavalier! Those kits are still out there cheap, and it’s actually a pretty decent kit to build. After I built mine stock, people started giving me kits! Like they found a place to dispose of them without the guilt of throat away!

Chevy 3100 AMT
Tom Geiger replied to happy grumpy's topic in Model Trucks: Pickups, Vans, SUVs, Light Commercial
Great truck! I love a weathered old pickup. When I built this kit I had issues getting the front end to sit right. I’ll have to try another -
Congratulations! Cheers to the little guy!

Your biggest blunder
Tom Geiger replied to LL3 Model Worx's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
When I was 13 I was building a 72 Cougar on my grandfathers basement floor. I put the body directly on the floor and sprayed! My grandfather didn’t realize I was working there, opened the back door and threw a huge extension cord in, smashing the roof of the Cougar! I was upset, and when he saw I painted the basement floor, he was upset and threw away my model. I believe he felt guilty because he came home from work the next night with a Porsche 914 kit. I never built, but still have it! Years later, as an adult, after my grandfather’s death, I had to clear out the house to sell. I was cleaning out the basement, looked down and saw the blue body shape of the Cougar still painted on the floor. -
A bit of advice from a Certified Ergonomist.. First you need to make sure you have set yourself up correctly. The right chair, at the right height, to a bench at the right height. And proper lighting. Then just like office work.. sit at the bench for 45-50 minutes, then get up for a short break. Walk around, stretch your muscles, refocus your eyes on far away objects like across the room. Bathroom break, sip of water and you should feel refreshed enough for the next hour. You will be more productive, and have given muscles you are overusing a break.

Building a model from SPARE PARTS ONLY!
Tom Geiger replied to steveracer's topic in Model Building Questions and Answers
a complete parts build.. All I had was the 63 Valiant body with a broken roof. The body was all scratched and the lips of wheel wells were all chipped and broken. A busted up 71 Duster provided the chassis and drivetrain. Interior came from Hemi Under Glass, roll cage and wheels from Falcon modified stocker, bumpers are 57 Chevy. -
I also had that same stellar experience. Mine was a dishwasher that took 3 months.
