Tesla vs Hellcat
Tom Geiger replied to Joe Handley's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
I just had to chuckle. A world goal after World War II was to intertwine the economies of world powers so that they'd be so dependent on the others that there could be no more world wars. And we've pretty much done that, except for some third world jerks that still need a good thrashing. And we're here complaining about it! -
I'm bummed. My mother in law died last evening. She was in a nursing home, an Altzheimers patient for many years so her quiet peaceful passing is a relief for the family. She is no longer suffering. The lady we knew has been gone for years. Still, I mourn her passing. She was the nicest lady, we used to call her Mrs Cunningham. In fact I never had any issues with my inlaws at all in our 35 years together. And peace to my bro-in-law who had the awesome and awful responsibilities of being her guardian and decision maker. Good job Don, I know how that goes from my folks.

1968 Road Runner- front and rear shiny stuff 2/24
Tom Geiger replied to johnbuzzed's topic in WIP: Model Cars
Nice work John! I believe the little mopar aluminum tag Jerry gave you was made by Noel Hyman. He was in my club back in the early 1990s. His family owned a jewelry store and he made the license tags, valve cover decorations and air cleaners in different colors. He sold them at shows in our region, that's why I think it's one of his. Noel would stop by my house, and my daughter was about 9 and was working on this Samurai. Yellow with the red highlights which mimicked my Geo Tracker which was new back then. The next time he came over he presented her with these plates and she was delighted! -
Yup, a British Ford Granada. Back in 1981 I drove one briefly in Jamaica when I was there on my honeymoon. I was intrigued by the RHD cars there, and saw there was a Hertz agency within a short walk from our hotel. So I went and rented one. I drove it around, then brought it back about an hour later. The guy asked me why, and I told him I just wanted to test drive it out of car curiosity. He asked me if there was anything else on the lot I'd like to try, then let me drive around a couple different cars including a Toyota van with RHD and a 4 speed on the column!

Wow! Another ancient post back from the dead! And irony that it's about unfinished projects! I post my work in progress builds. First, I like to share what I'm doing, as others said, because it can motivate me to keep on going. Second, people give me ideas that often get incorporated into the project. Also, people will alert me to an issue while I can still fix it. I'm the poster child for unfinished projects. The Volare I just finished is something like a 25 year old project that got pulled out every five years or so... and why did it get pulled back out several times in the past 10 years? Because people who had followed the build threads inquired or pushed me to get back to it. In fact, it's now finished because a friend of mine on anudder board and I challenged each other to finish a specific old build that each of us admired. And now both of those models are done!

No intrest in Sport Sedans ?
Tom Geiger replied to Jon Haigwood's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
My understanding is that the plastic warped as it off-gassed and the damaged occurred within a few years, and that any promo you got today wouldn't deteriorate any further. That doesn't explain why some of the same model warped more than others, maybe environmental with humidity and temperature playing a part.. I don't know what's actually right. -
Tesla vs Hellcat
Tom Geiger replied to Joe Handley's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
I'm not expecting gas to stay this low for the long term. Some stupid world event will happen and it will jump up overnight. It's actually impossible for it to be this low. If you told us this a few years ago we never would have believed it -
I love it and wouldn't change a thing! It represents an era and should be preserved. My wife is making some scrap books for family and we've been reviewing a lot of family photos from that era... my wife with "Big Hair". We thought it all normal and stylish at that time, but it looks so old now!

White Scallop Decals?
Tom Geiger replied to Tom Geiger's topic in Model Building Questions and Answers
Thanks for posting them Eric. Not exactly what I needed, so I'll stick with the little flourish design that I found this evening. Close enough for what I'm doing. -
White Scallop Decals?
Tom Geiger replied to Tom Geiger's topic in Model Building Questions and Answers
Thanks. I spent the evening trying that. I printed my scallops on the back of the decal sheet and tried to cut it out. As I suspected, the issue became the tiny little curve. I tried to cut it with the eXacto blade using a metal drafting template. No go, I just couldn't cut a half circle that tiny. Once I did get a sloppy scallop cut out, I tested it in water, and it shattered. I guess all that work cutting out the tiny decal flexed the decal material too much. As of right now, I found a tiny "flourish" a small pin stripe arch design that was on the old Green Hornet decal sheet. I went through six of them to get two to go on the doors! Somehow these just wouldn't separate from the backing sheet, and I wound up piecing them together once they did. Not a good night with decals! -
Bonneville Hot Rod Streamliner - Update 01-21
Tom Geiger replied to Bernard Kron's topic in WIP: Model Cars
That came out pretty cool! -
Very nice Nomad, Steve! Irony is that I started this one some 20 years ago... close color scheme!
-
Very cool model. I saw something interesting looking at it.... imagine the engine out front of the casket.. and two passenger seats, fighter jet style both with their own windshields... man, we see odd things

Mine too! -
Sorry to hear that Lucas. One time many years ago I was stopped at a traffic light on a busy highway. I look over and the car on my right has a large ladies purse on the roof. There was a young girl driving it, so I honk and try to get her attention. I'm waving my arms and pointing up to the roof. The girl looks at me in disgust, like I'm some idiot trying to pick her up. The light changes and she hits the gas pedal to get away from me. A few hundred feet down the road I'm far enough behind her to watch the purse fly off the roof and a bunch of cars run it over! Oh well, nothing like a little Karma.

Yes. This was a black diecast and the paint was good enough (as well as not wanting to lose the tampo trim) I disassembled it and stripped / painted the white body panels. Sheriff decals were out of the Johan '59 Rambler kit. I did add the missing hood bumps by carving toothpicks.

White Scallop Decals?
Tom Geiger replied to Tom Geiger's topic in Model Building Questions and Answers
The area is 1-3/4" long by a bit more than a 1/2" high. Thanks Eric! I do have white decal paper, but fear I wouldn't be able to cut the tight curves inside the design. I was hoping that someone would mention a kit decal, maybe even one I had in my stash! I did find a little pin striping design I could use, different but still filling in the door space with a white design -
Very nice conversion! Clunky or not, it's great to have a replica of your 1:1 on the shelf!
-
Very cool! I haven't seen any of these locally. I have a Walmart, but seldom has any of the 1/24, 1/25 diecast. I seriously need to get a few!
-
Nice job on that. It doesn't matter that it started as a diecast, as soon as you modify it, it's a model. Here's mine:

Tesla vs Hellcat
Tom Geiger replied to Joe Handley's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
When you get down to it either car is an expensive indulgence, and it just depends on which way you swing. You are a muscle car guy so you'd choose the Hellcat. My cousin is a techie, so he bought the Tesla.. and traded in a Leaf on it. -
No worries! Many of us live there!

1977 Volare Messenger Car - Finally Finished!
Tom Geiger replied to Tom Geiger's topic in Model Cars
Al, it was a 13 year old junker that Todd had given me. I think he had built it when he was a kid. Back then you could find a Volare kit at shows for $5-10. I did that several times as well! -
