66 GTO Knafel Pontiac's Tin Indian
59 Impala replied to 59 Impala's topic in WIP: Drag Racing Models
Thanks Jeff. I got er done tonight. The last build for this year. Here are some pics fer ya. I really enjoyed building this replica of this car. I've wanted to do this fer a very long time and I finally got er done. I have 50 some pics in my photobucket if anyone would like to take a gander at the build process. I had to make resin copies of the headers from the 68 Firebird kit so I could make this happen, and I had to modify the frame a tad to get them to fit. Thanks fer lookin and HAPPY NEW YEAR everyone. Well, I got the decals on and next is the BMF. Here are some pics with the decals on. I don't know who made the decals, but they are thicker than most other decals I've used. Also, once they touched the body, they were stuck in place. The Knafel Pontiac on the right side is a little crooked and there was nothing I could do cause it was stuck in place. But, that's Ok, it's still a "Tin Indian". Thanks fer lookin. Dan -

Thanks Richard. I got the BMF done tonight and I also drilled holes for pins to represent the wiper shafts on the cowl. Here are a few pics fer ya. I hope ya can see the pin sticking up for the wiper. Thanks fer lookin. Dan -

Thanks guys for the kind words. The chassis from the 66 or 67 will work with some work but I have to use what I have. Yep, Jeff, that's dragway 42. I grew up in Akron and I remember seeing the 66 in the Knafel showroom back then. I'm kinda excited to get these "Tin Indians" built. I have a friend back in Mogadore who used to work on them back in the day. More to come. Dan -

My condolences also to you Bill. I'm glad to see you back as well. I love what you're doing to this car fer sure. I will be watching the progress you do. Dan P.S. By the way, I installed the roof you sent me on the 60 that I have and it fits just good enough that I don't have to waste the 60 body. I couldn't do anything with it the way it was fer sure. Here is a pic of it with the 59 roof. I have glued it in place since this pic was taken and that's as far as I've gotten with it. I also filled in the 59 only recess on the rear of the roof. Thanks again for helping me save this one. -

Got a couple pics for and update. I worked all week putting these decals on this car. They are Fred Cady decals. Nice, but I really don't care for the two part decals. But, these are the only ones available, so this is what it looks like on the left side. I'll install the decals on the right side this coming week. I'm not in any hurry fer sure. Here it is with the Gold letters on with other decals. Here is the Black letter outlines installed over the Gold. There are a few things that are wrong with these decals. The outline letters for the Knafel Pontiac is Red on the sheet along with the line under the Gold stripe. I had to scan these and then print them as the Black outline and stripe. Akron Ohio should also be Black, but I'm leaving that as is. Also, the Gold for the Indian is the wrong color but I'm leaving that as is also. I do like how this is turning out so far. Thanks fer lookin. Dan -

Well, I got a little more work done on this tonight. I'm almost done with the body work. Here are some pics as it is now drying hanging upside down so no dust bunny's gather on top of the body. This pic shows where I had to do a little work because of sink marks. Bummer. More sink marks. Now here it is after painting. This one I like cause there is no seam on the body where I had to cut and install the top. Now I have to figure out what I'm gonna do about the chassis for this build. I don't like the one in the kit at all. But, I may have to use it anyway. We'll see. Thanks fer lookin. Dan -

Thanks guys. I'm not sure what I'm goin to do about the chassis yet. I thought about using the chassis from the Revell 66 but I don't have a spare. I'm sure that I'll get something figured out before I get er done. The Revell chassis would need some work to get it to fit but it is a way better one to use fer sure. We'll see what happens. Dan -
This is another Tin Indian that I want to replicate. I never knew that this car even existed until I saw this picture on the net. Here are some pics of this build. I had to glue the top in place and use putty to fill the voids. I also had to cut the top of the body so the top would fit where it's supposed to set. The wheel base looks wrong. lie too short. I'll have to figure out what to do to fix this. Thanks fer lookin. Dan

Well, I finally got some more done on this car. I had some trouble with the Black paint and had to paint it three times before I was satisfied with it. Here are some pics of how it looks now. Mocked up in White. After sanding the Black for the second time. This is how she looks now in all her glory. I can't wait to get the decals on and see it as the "Tin Indian". Thanks fer lookin. Dan -

Thanks guys. Can anyone tell me if back in the 60's the super stock cars ran with stock exhaust underneath but disconnected? I'm not sure. I also need to find two sets of headers for Pontiac's. The kit that Revell issued doesn't have headers. Which is kinda dumb cause the GeeTo Tiger is a super stock car. All the parts inside are the same as the stock GTO. Dan -
This is my next project. Here are some pics of the beginning. The first pic is of the real car. The interior started. Paint started. I got the White sprayed on this morning and I'll let that dry and then paint on the Black. I also had to strip the chrome off the front and rear bumpers and will spray them with Alclad. Thanks fer lookin. Dan

Very well done. The weathering is spot on. Nice, well used truck. Great job. Dan -
I finally got er done. Here are some pics of how she looks now. I hope ya like it. I couldn't use the headers from the kit because of the big block so I used the manifolds from a 409 and made the curved pipes to meet up with the side pipes. Thanks fer lookin. Dan
-
Thanks guys. Mike L., those wheels came in the kit. I like those tires also Mike N. Two Mikes at the same time. :) Dan

Thanks a lot guys and Charlie, the color is one that I mixed up. I used Testors Bronze, Copper, a little Ruby Red and a little Brown to come up with my Rootbeer, sorta. I tried to come close to Testors Rootbeer using their enamels. Their Rootbeer is a lacquer and I like using the enamels and wanted to see if I could come close in color. I like the results. Dan

I got some more done to this car tonight. Here are some pics of what she looks like now. I want to use the big block but I'm not sure if the exhaust will fit. I should know tomorrow if it will or not. Thanksfer lookin. Dan
