Brudda Posted April 24, 2015 Posted April 24, 2015 I was 16 at the time. A 1970 Mach 1 Mustang' 351 cleveland with a shaker and a 2bbl carb. FMX auto trans. Green with black stripe. Dk green interior. Bought it in 1973 when the gas crunch was at its highest. It had 32000 miles and it was $2000. Performance cars were out. There was a 1966 shelby 427 cobra next to this car. I told my dad I wanted to buy this little british car. It was the 427 cobra. I saved money since I was 10 to buy a car. I had $3500. The cobra was $3800. I asked my dad for a loan on the $300. He was wondering why a british car was so expensive. After a extensive lecture on how he was not stupid and a 16 year old was not getting a 425 hp car. Sooo I asked if I could buy the Mach 1. He took off the shaker and air cleaner and saw the 2bbl carb and said ok. The other $1500 went to insurance. That was alot of money in 1973. But I was in heaven.
Miatatom Posted April 24, 2015 Posted April 24, 2015 My first was a 56 Ford Customline 2 dr sedan, a gift from Dad. The first one I bought was a 61 Chevy Impala 2 dr hardtop. Black with a red interior. Models of both to follow.
ToyLvr Posted April 24, 2015 Posted April 24, 2015 '62 Corvair Monza Coupe, 102HP, 3-speed manual, lots of flow-thru ventilation. Purchased in 1974 just before my 16th birthday for $100. Over 40 years later, I'm still driving Corvairs, and alive to tell about it!

Dragfreak Posted April 25, 2015 Posted April 25, 2015 (edited) I bought my first Vega on my own when I was 8, I worked my butt off for months doing yard work for neighbors. My dad and I began to search for a cheap project car and we found a 1971 Vega panel delivery, 1 of only 7,800 ever made. It was sitting in a barn surrounded by several old Mercedes and bikes owned by a WW2 vet. He forgot he even had it, I believe he had dementia. We struggled to get a price out of him, after several hours of repeated war stories he told me $300 and it's mine. This is how we found it sitting in the barn. It had a poorly swapped corvette 283 in it when we found it when we got it home After cleaning the half inch of dust it had accumulated since it was parked in the late 70's I was slowly plugging away at it, buying things when I could, with a little help from my dad. Here's when I was putting in the 357 small block Finally when an opportunity to buy my current vega came up, I need cash quick, so I was forced to sell it. This is shortly before I sold it. forthlin Posted April 25, 2015 Posted April 25, 2015 (edited) My first paid for car was a 1963 Olds. Dynamic 88 convertible I bought for $115.00 in June, 1971. This was my first conv. & I loved it. My girlfriend & I took that car to the drive-in theatre every Friday & Saturday night that summer, rain or shine. It had the neck snapping "slim jim" transmission that gave it's last snap in Feb. 1972. I had no idea how to change a trans back then & my Mom wouldn't let me keep a "junk" car in the driveway, so off to the scrap yard it went. I still have the keys & title to it & a few pictures. Tom Geiger Posted April 25, 2015 Posted April 25, 2015 My first car was a beige 1966 Valiant 100 2 door sedan with a 225 slant six and auto trans. You aren't seeing things, the photo was taken in Switzerland. This was our family car, and we took it to Europe in 1969 and back home in 1973. It became mine in the fall of 1975 when I got my license. I immediately had it painted that same silver all the Ford Granadas were that year because it had a red interior!
richslocum Posted April 27, 2015 Posted April 27, 2015 First car was a two tone (red/white) '67 Galaxie 500 with 289 and a pair of cherry bombs to keep it quiet.
JollySipper Posted April 28, 2015 Posted April 28, 2015 My first car was actually a project car that I purchased before I bought myself a car to drive...... it was a '67 Plymouth. Paid $800 for the project, but only paid $100 for my driver!! The guy saw that I was buying the driver, a '74 Dart with a slant six, with my own money, so he cut me a deal.............
horsepower Posted April 28, 2015 Posted April 28, 2015 My first car was bought the summer of '68 after graduation, '56 Chevrolet Bel-Air sedan, 283, four speed, fenderwell exit headers, chrome 15" rear rims, 14" chrome front wheels, it was dusty rose and white when I bought it, but the next summer I painted it '69 Plymouth code F-6 bright green metallic. It got 5 mpg on the highway, but could get from stoplight to stoplight very quickly, often carrying the front wheels most of the way.
High octane Posted April 28, 2015 Posted April 28, 2015 My very first car that I bought with my own ca$h was a '60 Pontiac Ventura 4-dr. that I beat the BLAH_BLAH_BLAH_BLAH out of and blew the motor after I had promised it as a trade-in on my first new car. Got the engine "patched up" and made the trade.

johnbuzzed Posted April 28, 2015 Posted April 28, 2015 '67 Plymouth Fury II wagon, dark blue; a hand-me-down from my parents in '74. That kept me away from another vehicle that I was considering at the time. It was free, it was very clean and maintained and it was the car in which I learned to drive. BIG car, floaty front end...

Watertown Posted April 30, 2015 Posted April 30, 2015 1969 Pontiac LeMans Custom S Convertible. I was a Junior in High School in 1977 when I purchased this car for the princely sum of $350.00. Spent the following summer restoring it with the help of a buddy, and my dad who did the body work and final paint. My buddies and I had some great times in that car!
unclescott58 Posted April 30, 2015 Posted April 30, 2015 Mine was a '53 Chrysler New Yorker Deluxe club coupe. It was about 23 or 24 years old when I bought it. I was was 5 years younger, at 18 or 19. It was in great shape other than the brakes. Leaky master and wheel cylinders. Had to pump the pedal a few times before they'd work. And this was on every stop! But, being young and stupid, I drove it like that for almost a year. Other than the brakes, it was a very nice car. Light blue. Gray cloth interior. Power steering and windows. 331 Hemi. FluidDrive transmission. A wonderful sounding tube radio. A very classy car. Wish I had it today (of course). Scott
promoman Posted May 1, 2015 Posted May 1, 2015 1970 Buick Skylark a total rust bucket. Bought it for 150.00 , it caught on fire on way home, the rear floor mat fell though the hole in the floor and landed on the exhaust, I pulled out and finished driving home. I fixed the hole and drove it for 2 yrs and sold it for 150.00
dwdirks Posted May 1, 2015 Posted May 1, 2015 My first car was a champange gold 1969 Mustang GT with a 351 Windsor engine with a 4 on the floor and a black interior. Great first car. Bought it for $3,500 in 1970 and sold it for $3,800 in 1972 before going to Germany for a year. Bought an old 1960 VW beetle in Germany to bomb around Europe - lots of fun.
Custom Hearse Posted May 1, 2015 Posted May 1, 2015 Mine was a Medium Metallic Green 1968 Dodge Charger. It had deep and deeper Ansen five slot wheels, High Jacker Air Shocks in the back, and a 440 four barrel.
Ace-Garageguy Posted May 1, 2015 Posted May 1, 2015 $250 '62 Bug with a '58 36hp engine. Engine leaked like a stuck pig. Built it a hot 40 horse, lowered it, gutted it, and made it an autocross car....my first ever heavy engine work. The rest is, as they say, history.
