StevenGuthmiller Posted January 30, 2017 Posted January 30, 2017 (edited) It always brightens my day & gives me a little chuckle when I run across an auction like this on ebay. It's an AMT '63 Mercury convertible from Canada priced at $76.00! The add states: RARE! AMT '63 Mercury Not broken & "no parts missing". No parts missing? how can there be? They're all glued to the body! Actually, I think you would be very hard pressed to find a factory stock part that "wasn't" missing. Steve Edited January 30, 2017 by StevenGuthmiller
1930fordpickup Posted January 30, 2017 Posted January 30, 2017 Dad I still have glue left but no parts! Wait just found another box in Juniors room with stuff in it.
CometMan Posted January 30, 2017 Posted January 30, 2017 '63 Mercury you say? Other than the hash marks on the rear quarter (that are nearly covered by the '58-'59 era "candlesticks"), I'd just have to take his word for it!
charlie8575 Posted January 30, 2017 Posted January 30, 2017 I'm at a loss for other words. Charlie Larkin
Old Nasty Posted January 30, 2017 Posted January 30, 2017 What is that little critter under the rollbar? Cat? Bunny? Large gerbil?
Foxer Posted January 30, 2017 Posted January 30, 2017 I was going to say something ...... ok, that's something!
Mike999 Posted January 30, 2017 Posted January 30, 2017 What is that little critter under the rollbar? Cat? Bunny? Large gerbil?Probably one of the stuffed animals AMT was putting in kits at the time. Couldn't magnify the pic large enough to see clearly. I think it looks like a possum.
Mark Posted January 30, 2017 Posted January 30, 2017 Did the words "screw bottom" appear anywhere in the listing?
disabled modeler Posted January 30, 2017 Posted January 30, 2017 ..... ...sad thing is I have a 63 Mercury Parklane convertible promo that needs parts...there not on that one far as I can tell..?
Snake45 Posted January 30, 2017 Posted January 30, 2017 Did the words "screw bottom" appear anywhere in the listing? HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA! If it didn't, I bet a lot of us were thinking it, or something very similar.
espo Posted January 30, 2017 Posted January 30, 2017 Did the words "screw bottom" appear anywhere in the listing?I think that may have been the name of the original builder. At least all of the rare Custom Accessories are present and accounted for.
Mark Posted January 30, 2017 Posted January 30, 2017 (edited) A lot of them were built like that. I'll bet the kid who built it had a blast back in the day. I couldn't bring myself to stick one together exactly like that, but I do have a couple of started Advanced Custom kits (including a '63 Merc hardtop) that I intend to finish using the kit's prescribed custom parts. In the case of my Mercury, I had to fix some overzealous trim removal and realign a few already-glued-on parts. But it's too far gone to save as a stocker, I've got a stock one already, and the butchered/customized one was cheap... Edited January 30, 2017 by Mark spelling
FordRodnKustom Posted January 30, 2017 Posted January 30, 2017 I see solid bones and the makings of a slick mild custom there with a little work...but not for that price.
Jon Haigwood Posted January 30, 2017 Posted January 30, 2017 They put them parts in the box for a reason. (but that ain't it)
Casey Posted January 30, 2017 Posted January 30, 2017 When the instruction sheet says "use custom parts...", and the builder uses all of them. A lot of them were built like that. I'll bet the kid who built it had a blast back in the day.
Casey Posted January 30, 2017 Posted January 30, 2017 Looks like a Barris original. Nailed it. The Modern Grecian:
gtx6970 Posted January 30, 2017 Posted January 30, 2017 One has to consider,,it is best offer. Glad I found the one I have, and I dont have $50 in mine
om617 Posted January 30, 2017 Posted January 30, 2017 I could see how these must been popular back in the days considering how much custom stuff and decals there was.Today you are lucky if you get a set of cragars extra.
StevenGuthmiller Posted January 31, 2017 Author Posted January 31, 2017 Probably one of the stuffed animals AMT was putting in kits at the time. Couldn't magnify the pic large enough to see clearly. I think it looks like a possum. I was thinking maybe an Iguana or the like? Whatever it is, it makes the model! Steve
