Trip up the island for a good American burger at the flight line café to watch the big C-5s and C-141s take off and land. The big treat was an occasional view of the Black birds coming or going, always by chance.

Desert Storm era for me. 6 years in the Navy. I did Electronic Warfare.I was on the USS Conyngham when she burned up, then went back for tech schools and on to the USS Roosevelt CVN 71. If I had stayed with Destroyers, I probably would have re-enlisted.

About 200 years ago...Marine Corps, 6 yrs. Primary job was in the Air Wing, working on Infrared and Forward-Looking Radar systems.  Also did a tour as a Drill Instructor at MCRD San Diego.  (Though I went thru boot camp myself at Parris Island).  In case you ever wondered, D.I.'s do go to school to learn that job.  When I was in, we went to Drill Instructor School for 6 weeks.  We called it "The Pervert Factory."

Spent most of my career in the aerospace/defense industry, which took me all over the world:  Europe, Asia, Central America, the Middle East, etc. By coincidence I was living in Saudi Arabia when Iraq invaded Kuwait.  Later I lived for nearly 4 yrs. in Alexandria, Egypt, which was a lot of fun.

US Army E-5, 1961-1964.  513th Intelligence Corps Group, HQ Oberursel, Taunus Mountains, Germany.  Was a great experience with a variety of TDY postings in West Germany, Berlin the best and Heidelberg a close second.  Almost re-enlisted but had not been back to the States in almost 3 years and a lot of those who did re-enlist found themselves heading to Vietnam.

Bob, that is what I was doing at Sheppard, attending my tech school.  My training was about 9 months long.  Sheppard had one heck of an Airman's Club...lol.

It wasn't until a great uncle's funeral did I learn "Uncle Bob" was in FDR's Presidential Honor Guard and escorted his flag draped casket.  That's him behind at the wheel.  I knew he was in WWII and those that served never spoke other than 'they did what they were called upon to do'.  He also had a purple heart and a silver star.

My father served seven and half years in the Air Force including deployment to Germany during the construction of the Berlin Wall (although the VA didn't consider that active deployment to a hostile area).  Dad lost his battle with Dementia a year ago Memorial Day weekend.  He gave me the appreciation I have for cars.  I acquired a 1/43 AMT 48 Ford (still wrapped) last year at a show...same one my Dad did when I was a kid.  He kinda phoned it in on the skill level but it's hard for me to touch it right now but I will build it as he intended.
