kitbash1 Posted January 30, 2019 Posted January 30, 2019 (edited) I would like to know what the groups thoughts are of having a For Sale section on the site. I know that Gregg had a version of a kits for sale page that didn't pan out, and was taken down. I'd like to sell my kits to people on this site who will build or add them to their collection, instead of putting them on ebay and seeing them show up on sale again a month later at an inflated price. I know it will be up to Gregg as it is his site, so I'm just putting this out there. Edited January 30, 2019 by kitbash1
iBorg Posted January 30, 2019 Posted January 30, 2019 NO, no and maybe even no. The trade section works. If you post something and someone wants what you post but lack what you're wanting they can offer. I've seen too many train wrecks with for sale sections. If you don't want to trade, which does make this forum a bit unique, there's other forums and Facebook groups.
bobthehobbyguy Posted January 30, 2019 Posted January 30, 2019 This subject has been discussed many times. Gregg has said no to selling. As said trading allowed.
Ace-Garageguy Posted January 30, 2019 Posted January 30, 2019 Far too much potential for people to expect the site to become the mediator for sales gone wrong. "I sent money and never got my stuff" "No he didn't". Yada yada yada. eBay has a conflict resolution procedure to deal with problems like that, but the time and resources don't exist here to do it. Trades seem to work OK for the most part, when they're conducted between long-term members. But somehow, folding green has a nasty side-effect of making nice people turn nasty sometimes. I've been able to work out "trades" for cash occasionally when I didn't have what the poster wanted in kits and really wanted his item, but it's best to keep it off the board...in my opinion.
Bill Eh? Posted January 30, 2019 Posted January 30, 2019 Gregg has made it more than clear as to his position on this. No selling on the board. Trading section works just fine.
iamsuperdan Posted January 30, 2019 Posted January 30, 2019 EXACTLY what Bill said. I'm sure some longer term admins can chime in with more detail, but a for sale section is an emphatic no.
cowboy rich Posted January 30, 2019 Posted January 30, 2019 Nope, I've had good luck with the trade section and has been mentioned I've paid some cash a couple times, all through P.M. no site involvement and only with people I "know" or ones on the the traders list.
High octane Posted January 30, 2019 Posted January 30, 2019 This forum has been working well with a NO selling, and trade ONLY section, so why screw it up??? If it's not broke, don't fix it.

StevenGuthmiller Posted January 30, 2019 Posted January 30, 2019 I occasionally will work out a deal for cash when a member wants something I have but doesn't have a suitable trade, but it is done between the members with no site involvement. The way I see it, it's still a trade. That being said, I don't see any need to screw things up with a "for sale" section. Things seem to work pretty well here as is. Steve
Casey Posted January 30, 2019 Posted January 30, 2019 (edited) 19 hours ago, kitbash1 said: I would like to know what the groups thoughts are of having a For Sale section on the site. This forum isn't really set up as a merchant type site, whereas other sites such as eBay and Etsy are. Not every forum can nor should be a place to conduct business, just as other sites shouldn't be a place to have in depth discussions. 19 hours ago, kitbash1 said: I'd like to sell my kits to people on this site who will build or add them to their collection, instead of putting them on ebay and seeing them show up on sale again a month later at an inflated price. Why would you limit yourself to selling them to people who visit this forum? Your above statement reads like you have an issue with selling something to someone else, then seeing the new owner asking more for the same item you sold. A previous time this topic came up, when Harry and I were still moderators, we asked if any members would be willing to volunteer their time to moderate and ensure the Trading Post sections ran smoothly and to be responsible for any disagreements or snaggles which might take place if selling was allowed. Guess how many members volunteered? That's why eBay works just fine for most people-- you pay for the potential of not having to resolve issues when people don't abide by the rules, are dishonest, or intentionally make things difficult. Who would volunteer to do that here, for free, and guarantee themselves to be totally unbiased no matter what the situation? That person (or persons) would also have to commit to staying in that role for as long as needed, regardless if they got annoyed or frustrated from dealing with people's complaints and drama. Does anybody want that responsibility to fall upon their shoulders? We had members who couldn't even complete trades they agreed, but once money is involved, things escalate. I was involved with a few trades and outright sales (despite that being explicitly banned here on the forum) which went sour here on the forum when I was a moderator, and I can say without a doubt it does not benefit the forum as a whole in any way to involve selling. Too many different expectations, not enough (well, any, really, since there is no selling allowed here, so why would there be selling?) rules regarding delivery time, method, money management while the sale is in process, etc.--- all things sites like eBay handle for both the buyer and seller for a small fee. If you're an optimist, be thankful we have a the Trading Post and Wanted sections which allow members to get rid of and acquire things. For the vast majority of members, those sections work very well, and almost all of us are aware of other resources (eBay, Etsy, etc.) for those who prefer to sell outright. I'm not resistant to change, but we each have to consider the forum as a whole, not just our individual wants and desires, when we wish to see changes made. If it's something which would only benefit a small number of members, it's probably not a good idea to implement that change. Edited January 30, 2019 by Casey
TomZ Posted January 31, 2019 Posted January 31, 2019 Casey kind of covered this already, but why would you rather sell here than on EBay? Any transaction here will be a crapshoot as far as trustworthiness goes. EBay gives you a solid feedback profile of the prospective buyer or seller and protects you as a seller as long as you provide a tracking number for the shipment. If you use Paypal you are absolutely guaranteed payment before shipping. I've bought and sold probably about 100 things on EBay and never regretted a single one.

Not only that, but you are likely to get a much better price for your items on ebay. Modelers on this forum are notoriously cheap! Steve

stitchdup Posted January 31, 2019 Posted January 31, 2019 A sale section would just end up being page after page of complaints about the prices, sure the high ebay price threads are kinda interesting/fun to read but generally they aren't about members. If there was a sales section it would be about members and only lead to memebers leaving or bad feeling. Lets just leave the selling for other places and keep the community on even keel. Theres enough division in the real world, we dont need it here in our plastic playground
