Guys, same in every hobby!  I’m also a stamp collector and big companies have items listed at outrageously prices for years!  Someone has to be buying !

These are the "sold" ones I have found on Ebay.

Keep in mind the main selling point of the initial post was that it is sealed.

Personally, I would consider this one more desirable.

At least I would know that it's not an AMT '57 Chevy in a freshly shrink wrapped vintage box!

And for a third of the price!

Those were auction bids. The ones I found were "Buy it Now" listings. $350 is still high but reasonable if one really wants it badly enough.

Understood, I was intentionally sharing ones that "sold" per the search filter, to demonstrate that leap in price for what others were willing to pay, vs what the seller was "asking", with the only real difference being the plastic wrap, and the unknown inner contents unless you broke that very expensive wrapper.

There are many kits long out of production selling for ridiculous prices. Like one poster mentioned... some people will spend top dollar for a kit no matter what.

Those two kit images above are cool and I have never seen them before.

The Mr. Norm funny car kit was the first 1/25th scale kit I built without help from Dad. I have looked around for another one from time-to-time, but they seem rather hard to come by.

Just wondering..... how much impact is there in worth of an original kit if and when it is reissued ?

It may have some impact, but overall I agree with Bob, not much. The only impact I can see are the reduction in buyers that intend to build them, could ease some of the pricing pressure for the collectors. However, if Collector Carl has been wanted a Sealed "Used Cars" kit from long ago, and part of the prestige for them is in the fact it is sealed original (as the kits above indicate), they will continue to spend, then place it on a shelf and when they pass, their family will sadly sell it for next to nothing at a yard sale, donate for nothing, or heaven forbid, pitch it.

I'm sure that has happened more often. That's why checking out garage sales, estate sales, or even antique shops is where you might find model kits cheap.

Seems like round2 should be scoping out Ebay a bit more often.

ONe would think, but that is not true representation of the kit market.  Sure, you will find a dozen (or maybe even a hundred) rabid collectors out there who will pay $1000 for a rare old kit, but those kits are usually of very limited appeal.  If some company would re-release them, they would have to sell thousands or tens of thousand kits to make the venture profitable.  And you will likely not find 10,000 rabid collectors out there. And since those kits are of limited appeal (for example, I'm not interested in one), even if they sold them for $30 (or whatever the going price for new kits is nowadays), they would probably not be able to sell 10,000 of them.

For the out of production kits the main reason that they have not been reissued if that tooling has either been scrapped or the tooling was modified for another version. In either case the subject has to have a broad appeal to justify either recreating or modifying existing tooling.

Heh... if only we all can go back in time in the golden years of model kits, I’d grab a few from my youth at that generation prices. Back then, I remember kits running average of around $5.
