You mean the story with Joan Crawford and Tom Bosley, directed by Steven Spielberg?
gtx6970 Posted November 19, 2020 Posted November 19, 2020 I don't think I've bought a model kit in over a year, maybe closer to 2 years now. And in all honesty. I dont have much desire to buy either. Ive actually sold close to or even over 100 kits , both builders and unbuilts. And this trend will most likely continue. My newest garage toy will take my free time for a while Retirement is just under a year away. And I hope to get back into building some models afterwards . But I honestly cant say that I have the drive for them like I did in years passed
Snake45 Posted November 19, 2020 Posted November 19, 2020 I'd have to think awhile to tell you the last new model kit I bought, prolly months ago. I do continue to buy rarities off eBay, and promising glue bombs for rescue at the local toy show. Just remembered what my last new kits were: Grumpy't Toy Vega, and full-bumper '70 Camaro. Had to order them from Model Roundup because they haven't shown up locally. Can't remember the last kit I bought at Hobby Lobby. I already have "enough" of everything they stock.
Tom Geiger Posted November 19, 2020 Posted November 19, 2020 Back in the days when there were model shows I attended regularly with an eye for cheap kits that were good for parts, old customs from the early 60s and anything that struck my fancy. I’d always come home with a few bags of stuff. This year has been different to say the least! I bought a copy of the 67 Chevy 4 door and the new Land Rover. I bought one resin VW. And j just bought 4 decal sets on eBay. Then I bought 9 kits at Ollies. Aside from that it was just paint and supplies to keep me building.
Erik Smith Posted November 19, 2020 Posted November 19, 2020 (edited) Yes. I know what my completion rate is and I know how many kits I have. Ne’er the two shall meet. Borges has a quote about books, of which I have the same problem, the gist is “we buy more books thinking we are buying the time to read them”. Same for models. Edited November 19, 2020 by Erik Smith
Bugatti Fan Posted November 19, 2020 Posted November 19, 2020 We all buy kits with every good intention of building them 'someday'. Someday seems to slip away all too often when one does the maths equation; Too many kits plus too little time = having to sell off shed loads.
Spottedlaurel Posted November 19, 2020 Posted November 19, 2020 But, isn't it nice to ponder what's in the stash and have a choice of what to build?
keyser Posted November 19, 2020 Posted November 19, 2020 I had to stop. My meters running and I have 12-1500 kits. Every one has a build plan. I stopped by looking at each kit, figuring where in the gotta build it slots it fits, and proceed from there. I kinda forget to sell, have done so at a few shows with stuff I haven’t looked at in ages. Walk with 12-1500 each time, price stuff to go away. Sometimes 60-100, sometimes 10. Hard to stop but doable. Paint is my limiting step. So a lot are primed, bodywork done. Not much ambition to build either when ya feel lousy all the time. Good luck.
carrucha Posted November 21, 2020 Posted November 21, 2020 I have a large stash. I try to limit my kit purchases to kits that I am really interested in due to lack of space in my apartment.
ZTony8 Posted November 22, 2020 Posted November 22, 2020 Stop? Me? NAH! I'm investing in styrene futures.?
OldNYJim Posted November 23, 2020 Posted November 23, 2020 You know, nothing much is cheaper than it was 30 years ago... ...so if you might want to build a particular kit before 2050, best to get one now! ?

Let’s see.. back 30 years ago I was buying kits from a dealer at club meetings for $6 each! If I tried to resell those at a show today I might get $10! Big profit! ?

Unfortunately they were mostly AMT etc like 55 Chevy Cameos and things that have been reissued to death.

I confess, I too have an addiction. However, I don't drink, smoke, do drugs or spend time carousing somewhere. My wife and family know exactly where I am every evening. I guess I'm just boring. But I'm content.

I'm gonna hit Hobby Lobby on the way home to do some more careful investing!
JJ Deuce Posted December 6, 2020 Posted December 6, 2020 I managed not to buy any kits yesterday at Hobby Lobby, despite the 40% off sale. It would have been easy to justify but there wasn't anything I didn't already have or anything I thought I "needed."

I think the last few times I've gone there was for a bottle or can of paint and that's been a few trips in as many months.

So if there’s nothing else I’ll get that for 40% off. And past that I’ll buy a new can of Testors Dullcote or flat black. And I can always use album pages for my stamp collection.
