Fat Brian Posted September 27, 2021 Posted September 27, 2021 Well, I'm calling it done. I need to put a license plate on it and get some better shots but this is what I've got. I started with the Revell Mustang GTO kit. My objective was to de-racify it to the point that it would look street legal enough to make it across the country. So, I had to re-open the headlights and grille that had been closed off and add back some headlights and turn signal. While not fully street legal due to no side markers on the front it's going to fool most officers. Then I wrapped it in a coat of Tamiya light gunmetal with Mr. Super Clear semi gloss top coat. Now it was time to focus on making it into a Cannonball car. I ditched the 305 race motor and swapped in a 2.2 liter Cosworth 4 cylinder from a Monogram IMSA Mustang which also donated it's wheels. I added a turbo for a few more ponies in my Pony along with an intercooler and piping. The kit was a single seater with the passenger side completely removed and the exhaust exiting out the door. I added the door bars from an old NASCAR and seats from the Revell 90 drag Mustang. The extra fuel tank is from a Ramminator monster truck kit. The slicks had to go and were replaced with tires from a Fujimi County Countach up front and two of the smaller rear tires from two Monogram sprint cars. Finally, the rear window louvres to hid the roll cage and rear firewall are from a Revell snap Mustang and the mirrors are from a Tamiya race Skyline. 3
Mattilacken Posted September 28, 2021 Posted September 28, 2021 Great work on that dock build! Those looks so insane!
Pat Minarick Posted October 1, 2021 Posted October 1, 2021 (edited) Very nice work!! Edited October 1, 2021 by Pat Minarick
Pat Minarick Posted October 1, 2021 Posted October 1, 2021 Finally got the paint the way I wanted, patina with a satin clear coat. Should be done with this soon , everything is painted just have to assemble and weather it..
spencer1984 Posted October 2, 2021 Posted October 2, 2021 Some awesome work here! The fabricated headers on the Silverado look great, as does the patina on the Pontiac. That Mustang turned out great - very low-key but should be plenty potent on the road.
camaro69 Posted October 3, 2021 Posted October 3, 2021 (edited) Hey guys, after a long time without getting the hands on mine here´s a little update. Primed and painted the body with rattle can paint. Color is BMW Hockenheim-Silber. After first polishing I masked the window frames and painted them black again out of a can. After that I attached some decals and clearcoated the body with the topcoat from the BMW paint. Then another little bit of polishing. Finally installed the head- and taillights and 3d printed an oiltank which was painted with chrome rattle can paint. Here are the pics... That´s it for this weekend. I hope to get it finished this time... Rico Edited October 3, 2021 by camaro69 1
camaro69 Posted October 3, 2021 Posted October 3, 2021 Hey Brian, nice looking Stang. It´s very clean... Pat, your patina looks amazing again... And Hakån, your work on the headers is looking good.
Mattilacken Posted October 3, 2021 Posted October 3, 2021 When the team converted the corvette to the truck body the wanted to keep the wing to create as much downforce as possible. So they cut 8” out of it and fixated the bed sides to it to make it as discreet as possible. With minor tweaking the original wing support supports the wing and the bed sides. And the team decided to move as much weight as possible rearward so the radiator will be moving back which will give more room for the intercoolers. ?
Snake45 Posted October 3, 2021 Posted October 3, 2021 Quick question: Is "curbside" acceptable for this build, or is a full engine required? Finding a suitable engine for Stupidbird is proving more difficult than I thought. I'll find and install an engine if required, but I could drag the thing across the finish line without much further drama if curbside is acceptable.

The rules do not specify that it can't be curbside so you can choose to build it without an engine if that's what it takes to get it finished. I'm building a snap together kit and there's no rule against that either. However, I would encourage you to build it with an engine or atleast a curbside chassis plate cover... (oil pan, starter, transmission cover etc...) just so it appears to have an engine from the bottom. That's what I would do. Also if anyone is interested in starting a theme thread for next year's Cannonball feel free to do so. At this time I don't know if I'll have the time to devote myself to Next year's run. I haven't been as attentive as I would have liked this year due to unexpected work challenges. Thanks for the appreciation... 2

I think I'll go ahead and drag it across the finish line curbside, and I can always add the engine later if I find one (and the motivation to install it). I don't have any hopes/delusions that Stupidbird is gonna be in the running for the winner, anyway.

So everyone get their transmissions in gear and finish this Cannonball Run strong! I would like to mention that somewhere within these 22 pages I switched my entry from the 34 Slammer Modified to the Revell Ford Thunderbolt with a Jimmy Flintstone 64 Fairlane 2 door wagon body. That being said, I pulled the body out a couple of days ago and found it to look like someone had been storing a 20 pound dumbbell on top of it. I tried to straighten it, but it only looks slightly better. It had already been trimmed and primed and was just waiting for paint. Maybe I can try my first ever chopped top, but I'm really not sold on that idea. So I will probably be using the stock body and just saving the work that I have done for a different project.

Sorry bout that... I do remember that now...I updated it for ya... the Wagon was gonna be a cool project. Bummer that the resin body warped. I'm having difficulty finding the rest of my Nascar I packed up all my models during renovation back in March and I haven't fully unpacked. If I don't find it soon I may have to abandon that project and start anew... To tell the truth, Ford Fusions aren't really that exciting to me. I probably should've picked something more interesting to me anyhow. I need to get motivated and take my own advice I guess.
disconovaman Posted October 8, 2021 Author Posted October 8, 2021 I remember now how excited I was for this CBR... the cop car is back on the bench! I had to open just about every box but I found everything I need so I'm gonna power through and finish it up. 1

disconovaman Posted October 10, 2021 Author Posted October 10, 2021 Aside from chasing boring bodywork I've been making some good progress. I've mounted some mirrors that I'm quite happy with. They work pretty well. One thing I wasn't happy about was the lack of an engine in the snap together kit. Had I realized that, I probably would not have cut the hood open. I was just working too fast in the beginning I guess. So I'm gonna use an engine from the Revell Mustang Cobra. I'm not sure exactly what it is, maybe some of you Mustang guys can educate me... is it an intake mounted Supercharger? Also, I've decided to mount some more comfortable seats for the trip out west...I'm really starting to exercise my brain here with this build now.

This one isn't supercharged, it just has very long intake runners.
Spottedlaurel Posted October 10, 2021 Posted October 10, 2021 Great to see some more making it across the line, they look great, and also to see others making good progress. My house move (not something I knew I'd be doing at the beginning of the year) has rather delayed progress on current kit builds. However, I brought the WIPs and tools home the other day and as I've done the body paintwork on my entry I reckon I can get it done by the end of November.........
disconovaman Posted October 11, 2021 Author Posted October 11, 2021 I'm in fabrication mode today, still working on the body but I've been doing alot of Brainstorming... I keep goin back and forth on what to do for the look of my Police crusier... Unmarked car or Full Police Uniform? The Unmarked look seems kinda boring but would be unsuspecting... The Police car with all the bells and whistles would be cool and allow for more details but it would be suspicious seeing a generic police car flying from state to state... I'm thinking ?
Fat Brian Posted October 12, 2021 Posted October 12, 2021 Yeah, the advantage of the unmarked is it could be unmarked anything, especially with a DC or Virginia plate.
Mattilacken Posted October 12, 2021 Posted October 12, 2021 I agree about the unmarked theme since you are racing through so many states. But again full marked looks cooler ?
