6 builds I’m working on.  Gremlin like the one I owned.  2 Mustangs. Red one to recreate the one a friend has. The black one a painting disaster. The Caddy. A Corvair and a 1950 Ford.

6 builds on the go at one time ! Wow, David !

I tend to have one build that I am working on, at any one time. I did try two builds running concurrently, but I wasn't comfortable with it.

Well done you. I can see the advantages, but not everybody works in the same way, I guess.

Exactly David. In upstate NY. Winters can be brutal. So I paint the bodies of numerous kits with the spray booth. But you really don't want to do that every day. I then prime the other parts. And then paint those parts. And I build a little bit on each kit so the glue will dry. Some times it works out. Sometimes not. ^_^

Oh. And my builds are 10 footers. Any closer and you'll see all the faults. Spray painting is always an issue with me.

The Corvair is a horrible kit if you ask me. Tires are terrible. The engine posts didn't line up. I have 2 more in my stash and they are going on Ebay Snake. LOL. The caddy is in the purple pond. I used the cheaper Duplicolor primer for the first time and it pays to buy the more expensive one. I don't know if I can save the mustangs. I think I can save one. But after spraying them with the cheaper primer. The enamel ate right through the primer and screwed up the plastic. The red one I might be able to save but the black. I don't know. I've never used clear coat before. Do you wait days before you spray that on? Thanks.

You can save the plastic on that Mustang with some BIN.

I've repaired the surface on lacquer burnt kits by spraying a coat of BIN, wet sand smooth with about 1000 or 2000 grit, do it again and possibly once again if needed.

This Charger was really rough after I got the 40 years of paint off it and it turned out great. You'd never know it was damaged.

David, I always clear coat in the same session as I am painting. I wait 10-15 minutes after each color coat and each clear coat. Normally, I do two color coat and two clear coats of lacquer. I don't know what clear you are using but if you use Testors Wet Coat (a lacquer) make sure you use it sparingly - one pass per surface during each session as it will run in a heartbeat!  I normally use Krylon Clear Lacquer also referred to as 'Special Purpose" lacquer as it is less likely to run and dried very hard usually overnight. Also make sure the clear is compatible with the paint. I usually test that on the underside of a hood. Easier to fix.

My first car was a 1967 Corvair beater. Original paint was a light green color. When I got it, had black and rust colored primer over most of it. Leaked oil like a sieve, so could not use the heater in winter, as it was heated via the engine manifold. S..tty car but I loved it. Some day I'll build the same kit, regardless of issues.

I've owned a couple of Corvairs.  Fun cars, but a tinkerer's car.  I'd like to have another someday as a restoration/driver.

Very nice work on all of them! I think the 50 Ford is my favorite of the bunch! This is perfectly normal, I have a shelf full of on going builds!

Two builds at a time are plenty enough for me, and thats not until recently when I got anxious to start another one I got as a gift (to replicate a former 1:1 I had). I think I get too anxious to get one finished!!

And sorry about the earlier rant. I am OCD and obsessive compulsive and when something throws me a blind curve. Throws me way off. Plus I might be starting with Parkinson’s as my hands shake when I’m trying to do little work. My wife wants me to see the doctor but what can he do. My youngest sister has a form of Parkinson’s and there isn’t much they can do for her. Makes it so frustrating as I want my work to be like so many of you in the club who’s work I admire and know I’ll never be there. But as snake says. Model on. ?

David, I get a little shake in my right hand.  Try steadying your hand by resting it on something.  A guy who did a lot of hand lettering recommended a beam bag or substituted a large bag of M&Ms since it will form to the ball of your hand. Hope this helps!

It's a pigmented shellac. I usually thin it down and spray it with my airbrush as it comes out of the can kinda heavy.

It's alcohol based so I use regular rubbing alcohol for thinning and cleanup.

I happen to like your Corvair probably because I owned and raced one back in the day. I've also built that kit and don't remember any problems ans wish that I still had it. I do have a Corvair Prestige kit in my stash though, but who knows when and if I'll ever get to it?

Thanks Carl. it’s a GM green from 1966. I don’t remember the name. Thank you Steve. I’ll have to look into that. Nick. I’m told the prestige kit is much better.
