Gramps46 Posted April 2, 2021 Posted April 2, 2021 1966 Ford GT40MKII Sebring Winner At Sebring in 1966 Dan Gurney was leading the race till the last lap when he ran out of gas and attempted to push his car to the finish line. Ken Miles and Lloyd Ruby in the #1 Ford GT40 MK II passed Gurney and was declared the winner. The winning car was a unique GT40 having been made in 1965 with an aluminum chassis and out fitted by Bruce McLaren as a CanAM car, X-1, and ran that way in 1965. For the 1966 season it was decided to refit X-1 as a GT40MKII spyder and given chassis number GT110. After the race it was found the aluminum chassis was cracking in several places and was not fit to race again. GT110 was stripped of any useful parts and set aside. Then US Customs showed up and declared Shelby either had to pay the import taxes or destroy the car. Since the chassis was in such poor shape Shel had the chassis cut up and buried in a construction site nearby . This model is a Creative Miniatures Associates transkit on a Fujimi chassis and interior. It has finally been completed after a long slumber in the stash. This picture could never have been taken in real life as both cars are the same chassis, just a year apart.
randyc Posted April 2, 2021 Posted April 2, 2021 Beautiful! Your builds are always great and the history lesson makes it even better.
TonyK Posted April 2, 2021 Posted April 2, 2021 Great looking model and a different version that I haven't seen before. And yes, the history is an added bonus.
afx Posted April 2, 2021 Posted April 2, 2021 (edited) Great build Gary. My understanding too is that the car was destroyed but apparently there is debate about that. Lee Moody has built a replica. http://www.speedhunters.com/2018/09/sebring-winning-gt40-x-1-roadster-maybe/ Edited April 2, 2021 by afx
Bainford Posted April 2, 2021 Posted April 2, 2021 Gorgeous GT40! That looks fantastic. Very nicely done. Thanks for the history, too.
vamach1 Posted April 2, 2021 Posted April 2, 2021 (edited) Great build as always Gramps. It’s not too often you see this kit built and the other X-1 resin transkit built. As I mentioned before I wish I had bought more of the Lemans Miniatures ones to go along with the “larger” ? resin kits. I had not noticed some details you picked up like the unpainted parts of the interior and the “passenger” seat without the cooling ringlets. Edited April 3, 2021 by vamach1

Snake45 Posted April 3, 2021 Posted April 3, 2021 VERY sharp, but we expect no less from you! Well done as always, and model on!
Rich Chernosky Posted April 3, 2021 Posted April 3, 2021 Gary....a stellar job on this model. The history lesson was great too. Always good to know and it just enchances the build experience.
