I started this one quite a while ago and have a few posts in other sections about some issues. But now that those are pretty much sorted out, I figure I should start a build thread.

This is my first and only chop job so far. Here’s a link to that thread.http://www.modelcarsmag.com/forums/topic/163118-‘32-deuce-chop-question/?tab=comments#comment-2494687

I got ahold of some Pactra candy purple paint at a closeout sale that I fell in love with. It is made for RC cars, but it came out glossy in my test, so I figured I would try it. The first time around it made the roof insert (which I thought I had sanded off) telegraph through.? I stripped it, sanded the roof down till it was real smooth and tried again. Again it showed through.? Stripped again, and broke my A pillars in the process.?? I fixed the Pillars and embedded a short chunk of .020 brass rod in them. Then I bought a can of Zinnser bin and sealed the whole thing.BB447563-2134-4AA0-A7BB-585A605072EF.thumb.jpeg.17d56321d0c0f3a7a940e16dcd4eb969.jpeg

I had the interior completed already using the Pactra paint, so didn’t want to change colors. I have one little bottle of Testors Grape that likely  would have been enough…but knowing my luck with paint, I figured I might need more, but couldn’t find any locally. 164C8E91-33D6-4A89-8E5B-638D8958085E.thumb.jpeg.c123b517c8ade58dc431bedf98ae29db.jpeg45C52674-53EA-4F90-AD58-D1530B2B4EF9.thumb.jpeg.2a5d1a0465a5639910b549590392117d.jpeg
Then I checked my paint stash and found this Testors Aztek pearl purple. It sprays absolutely beautiful right out of the bottle. And the color is close enough that I don’t need to redo the interior!?

Oh yeah....that's a good looking little 32.  That pearl purple looks nice and smooth.  I like the fat fenders vs no fenders. Great work.  Is that a Hemi in there?

Hi Greg, sorry to hear of your paint issues, but you sure got it sorted out. The purple looks great on that, nice chop job too. I need to get some of that Zinnser bin, I’ve read good things about it. I’ll be watching as you finish this up, nice work as always.

Cheers, Steve

Thanks Bob. Yep, it’s a Hemi! I’m doing some elements of both the hiboy and the coupe versions. I have 3 or 4 of these kits….so this one is getting fenders.

Thanks Steve. The Zinnser seems to have worked, mind you this Aztek is water based whereas the Pactra was a hot laquer. They make a few varieties of Zinnser, so make sure you get the shellac based stuff.

That interior is beauty

Thanks Bil. I added the larger piping and painted it what I thought was going to be body color. I think it adds some contrast and ties the interior in with the body.

I got the engine put together and wired today. I had painted it when I did the first original candy coats on the body, but never assembled it, as I was worried that I may have to strip it.? The spark plug boots I made from some stripped wire insulation and some styrene discs that I punched out. The wires looms are made from a pop can. I shortened the fan belt and relocated the alternator, since I didn’t like it hanging out there in the middle of nowhere.?Also did the accents on the wheels at the same time.

I’ve got the suspension and drivetrain in place now. I screwed up when I cut the windshield surround down, so I have to redo it. Once that is done, the windows can go in and the body can get mounted.

I got the body mounted. It would not sit down nicely until I clipped off the locating pins.? They may be necessary for the highboy version??…but the fenders act as the locator for the coupe version.

That's one smooth paint job dude. Thumbs up all the way here.

Thanks Joe. That is just Mr. Hobby clear gloss straight out of the can over the Aztek pearl. No polishing.  That clear is not cheap, but it sure sprays nicely.

Great looking body color. Very clean looking build.

Thanks David.

My first attempt (way back when I started this) at mounting the headlights, now looks like a glue mess,? I did pin the cross bar to the fenders at that time, but the headlight buckets to cross bar…Yuck!?7EFCB4E5-4878-41C0-86F5-E7FD884782BF.thumb.jpeg.126062d693e007bfd6082547f57e6a10.jpeg

So I used the parts from another kit, and the smaller buckets. This time, I pinned everything. The holes in the fenders I drilled clear through which allowed me to apply CA from the underside once the bar was in place.DE237CEB-B68D-4E91-943C-6308AD346878.thumb.jpeg.339f4b4ef9213fc9b97ab2a439bba21e.jpeg

Then, I installed pins in the buckets and drilled holes in the bar mounting locations. This provides for a positive mount and still allows the wire pin to be bent and tweaked to align the buckets. Once glued in place, the excess wire was clipped off.D322C0BF-1AE0-4A62-958B-2A561E128A2C.thumb.jpeg.86a9dffe50263d4fcf8f00e0947f6bbe.jpeg

I used the same .020” beading wire for the shock shafts. I previously removed the shocks from the mounts and glued the mounts to the frame before paint.

Nice work on the headlight mounting. These kits are a pain to build full fendered with all the separate pieces. It makes for a more accurate model but a pain nonetheless. Looks like you got the fronts of the fenders glued down to the frame nicely, too. A ton of people don’t and then there’s a huge gap that looks terrible.

Nice work on the chop, too!

Very nice looking rod, well done. Great tip on the headlight assembly, I just got finished with a Revell '32 Sedan and it was a pita wrestling with the lamp buckets. Definitely going to drill and pin the next time.

Colours really appeal to me and I also really like colour coordinated detailing.

Atb, Steve.

Thanks Dennis. It is a very nice kit, but two things that bother me are the vague mounting points for some parts, and the huge multiple sprue attachment points on the chrome parts!? This is my first ‘32 Deuce, and my first chop….but it definitely won’t be my last!?

Thanks Steve. Yes, pins are your friend. I’ve got to remember to do them all before paint next time.?

I’m about done with this one. I added the front valence, and a side mirror. I’m not going to put any bumpers on it.
