I don't spend as much time on the site as much as I used to since the closed down the app. Those Swedes do some amazing work! -RRR No problem RR. I have another ‘36 in my stash that I have been wanting to get at. I found this pic on the net and was hoping to do something along these lines. Your build got me into googling stuff and I came across that fellows build. I hope you don’t mind me following your build and gleaning a few tips…or maybe a lot!? 1
Rocking Rodney Rat Posted December 16, 2021 Author Posted December 16, 2021 (edited) Today's installment concerns replacing the floorpan that was cut of the frame. Starting with a piece of .02" Evergreen sheet and a slice of tube for the driveshaft tunnel... Cut two pieces of the sheet plastic and slightly bevel the edges and then glue each piece to a side of the tube... It will sit on the frame like this... Viewed from underneath like this. Mark the frame and crossmember edges with a pen...somewhere along the way, the front xmember was cut out... Cut the edges off, leaving a bit of extra...as Kit Karson famously says "Leave the edge when cutting". It will be trimmed to fit later... The plastic is thin enough to cut it with scissors... I added a small piece across the back to give it some strength. The section where the tube goes across has since been cut away... The next step is to replace the ribs on the pan that would have originally made by an English Wheel https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/English_wheel or a bead roller to give the pan some strength and not buckle under weight. In our scale world this is done by cutting strips of .04" Evergreen half round. I scribed where the frame and crossmember areas go under the pan and then marked off where the ribs will go, I used a piece of rectangle as a guide rather than having to measure... I cut the half round pieces to size, sanded the edges to round them off and glued them on...kinda tedious... I sanded the whole thing down to remove some of the gloo..it will fit like this. A lot of work for an area that will hardly be seen....next up is the finish the rest of the pan over the back end of the frame... Thanks for following along...More later... -RRR Edited December 17, 2021 by Rocking Rodney Rat
Dennis Lacy Posted December 16, 2021 Posted December 16, 2021 You always make floor pans and other large panel fabrication look easy. The reinforcement ribs make it look very realistic. 1

The reinforcement ribs make it look very realistic. Thanks, ADL. I don't think it's really "hard", I just envision how the particular panel should look and figure that if I cut the parts this way and glue them together this way and finish it, it will look like what I want. Part of building a model is making parts that look like real ones, but just in scale. I guess a lot of it is practice and eventually getting good at it, a skill anyone can acquire. Many times there are a few attempts that don't work until I get it right...Remember, it doesn't have to "work' it just has to look like it does... -RRR 1
OldNYJim Posted December 17, 2021 Posted December 17, 2021 Great fabrication - love seeing work like this

Kit Karson Posted December 18, 2021 Posted December 18, 2021 You never cease to amaze... simply You're having way too much fun detailing the one part of your build that very few will ever see, Brother! -KK
Bullybeef Posted December 19, 2021 Posted December 19, 2021 I love the detail that you show in your builds, it literally drives me to my bench to work on my own builds.
bobthehobbyguy Posted December 21, 2021 Posted December 21, 2021 Love the step by step notes ion how you achieve your results.
Claude Thibodeau Posted December 21, 2021 Posted December 21, 2021 Hi! Well, RRR, you are the uncontested king of the bead roller. What a floorpan! CT
speedy5963 Posted December 21, 2021 Posted December 21, 2021 Good looking project! I love these 36 kits, can’t have enough, I’ve been purchasing them for years back to the original AMTs. I’ve only built one of the Revell kits but love it!
Rocking Rodney Rat Posted December 22, 2021 Author Posted December 22, 2021 Nice look build, Paul. Thanks for sharing.... -RRR
Rocking Rodney Rat Posted December 26, 2021 Author Posted December 26, 2021 (edited) Slowly working on the '36 as time allows over the holidays with family from out-of-state here. I got the floor pan installed and the rear suspension dialed in and the spring hangers fabbed up. I'm not sure what kit that axle and spring setup came from. Obviously from an AMT offering with that grey/beige color.... Also cutting in area for exhaust in trans mount brace. Shocks will need to be shortened. Next up: installation of front suspension, motor mounts and exhaust system....thanks for looking. Happy Holidays, all! -RRR Edited December 27, 2021 by Rocking Rodney Rat

customline Posted December 26, 2021 Posted December 26, 2021 (edited) Rodney, your floorboard work is so good it is now my standard. I've done this stuff quite a few times now and thought they were pretty good but now I'm going to try to do it the way you've laid out here. This is super work!!? It's my New Year's resolution. Rocking Rodney Rat Posted December 29, 2021 Author Posted December 29, 2021 (edited) Works continue on the underside of the '36.... motor mounts installed and here fabbing up the exhaust... I had to take a slice out of the oil pan to fit it over the front crossmember... ------- Here the undercarriage is just about done. Front crossmember installed, exhaust routed (I still need to make mounts), driveshaft put together (universal joints from a Revell '32 kit, with tube extended using Evergreen round). Now attention turns to the interior for a few items to take care of, package tray needs some work and a steering column hanger needs to be made and attached to the dash.. ------- The front suspension components were cleaned up with a few bolt details added...I'm getting dangerously close to throwing paint! Thanks for looking in... -RRR Edited December 29, 2021 by Rocking Rodney Rat 1
Dennis Lacy Posted December 29, 2021 Posted December 29, 2021 Chassis is looking awesome! Love all the bolt head detail, rear spring shackles and a nicely fab’d exhaust as usual.
cobraman Posted December 29, 2021 Posted December 29, 2021 Some very cool work is going on around here.

Kit Karson Posted December 30, 2021 Posted December 30, 2021 There's enough going on here and as always, the Master Fabricator is sharing a wealth of information and inspiration. Been watching over your shoulder for three decades and I am still learning something with your every build, Brother! -KK
Rocking Rodney Rat Posted January 6, 2022 Author Posted January 6, 2022 I've been slowing plugging away on the '36. Not much of excitement to post, just finishing up a few last few items... I fabbed up the steering column mount. The plan is to use some photo-etched gauges... ------- I added a windshield frame to the body... ------- It's off to the paint booth now... -RRR
