customline Posted December 18, 2021 Posted December 18, 2021 (edited) Here's my take on the AMT '41 Plymouth. I have made it my business to chop as many tops as possible ?. This one was somewhat of a challenge. This project is close to completion but for a paint issue. I tried to fix a blemish on the right door and it looked great in the sun....then I went inside. Out of the bright sun I saw that the new paint was a few shades darker. AAAAAUGHH!!! Anyway, here's the build from the beginning. Edited December 18, 2021 by customline Photo errors 2
chris chabre Posted December 18, 2021 Posted December 18, 2021 Always liked those PLymouths. I have one half shaved that I got rid of YEARS ago and it showed back up last month. 1
NOBLNG Posted December 19, 2021 Posted December 19, 2021 Not an easy chop I imagine, but the results looks great Jim. I’m doing my second ever chop on a ‘36 ford five window, and I am finding it to be an addictive endeavour!
bill-e-boy Posted December 19, 2021 Posted December 19, 2021 Nice looking chop job. Metallic paint can be a bitch at times though That would be a hairy ride with an elephant and cross plies out back lol 1
bisc63 Posted December 19, 2021 Posted December 19, 2021 That body really responded well to the chop! It now has a really great sense of "flow", that sense of moving even when sitting still. I'm noticing some swooping body lines and details on this I had overlooked before! Nicely done, and great color too! 1

Even a Model A can be trouble if it's the first attempt. It's the window reveals that kill you. I chopped the Revell 56 F100. Cut the roof in quarters to expand it both ways. That was scarey but not as difficult as making a Model A coupe look good. But it is addictive, I agree. It's the construction phase I love. I'll skip lunch when I'm cutting and filling. Zone right out. For this one I watched a bunch of you tube video of 1:1 forties types. Just did what they did. It's a lot easier in plastic ? . That '36 is a tough one. Just take your time around the windows. How far are you into your chop? 1

It was going so well...... 2

espo Posted December 19, 2021 Posted December 19, 2021 Great looking chopped top. I like the way the grill looks, and the color is nice and bright. 1
customline Posted December 19, 2021 Author Posted December 19, 2021 (edited) Thanks to all, your comments are greatly appreciated. I just wish I had rounded the top of the doors. Looking at some similar 1:1s, you'll see them both ways. Trying to straighten up door lines after a chop is hard enough but a radius, for me,, would not have been sucessful, I'm pretty sure. I just hope I can fix the paint and finish this puppy. Edited December 19, 2021 by customline 1

I made this tool for re-scribing trim and drip rails. It can be spread to whatever width needed and it could maybe be used for a radius like that? Edited December 19, 2021 by NOBLNG 1
slusher Posted December 20, 2021 Posted December 20, 2021 I agree with the others real nice chop. Those Boyd colors was great wish they would come back.. 1
customline Posted December 20, 2021 Author Posted December 20, 2021 Carl, I don't think they're ever coming back ?. Ebay! I found some there a few weeks ago. Greg, I think that could work. Basically, it's a compass when used to create a radius. Good thinking! Thanks, guys! 1
Zippi Posted December 24, 2021 Posted December 24, 2021 That chop came out nice. Great looking color. 1

Thanks, Bob, that's Boyd's orange pearl and I may have that last 2 bottles in existence and will probably need them to fix this little paint mistake. The thought of repainting the whole car is giving me nightmares. Edited December 24, 2021 by customline 1
