Pretty much everything you see in the other music threads.

When I was growing up I had a special room in the basement. The other half of the room was for my dads ham radio hobby. In the basement, all we had was radio. The record player (remember them) was all the way upstairs. I can remember listening to a lot of Dire Straits, Pink Floyd, Bowie, Moody Blues, all great bands but they would always play the top 40 type stuff. Once in a while Cream or somebody real cool would come on but you had to get through all the fluff first.

I usually go mellow. I can't listen to anything too heavy. Modelling is relaxing for me, and I need music that relaxes and soothes.

Post-rock or post-metal are my preferred genres.

Bands like There's a Light, Baulta, Vy-Pole, 417.3, Leech, Tacoma Narrows Bridge Disaster and all sorts of other bands no one has ever heard of.

I might be odd man out here but, little old fashion I guess.  Onkyo disk changer, receiver and speakers to rattle the windows. Lots of Metallica, Ozzy, Korn, Nickelback, you get the picture. My hobby room is above the garage.

It depends...on what I'm working on, the time of day, the day of the week, what kinda mood I'm in, etc.

Classical baroque is usually good for working on just about anything. Saturday nights I'll often stream the Atlanta PBS "Jazz Classics" program through the main amp and speakers, other times I'll steam some ambient or techno or epic stuff I find online, sometimes '50s rock, lotsa other stuff.

Or...I have two, 300 CD changers that alternate random tracks from albums I particularly liked when I was buying CDs...and there's music from just about every genre imaginable in there.

Like I said...it depends.

I really seem to enjoy the silence. I have tried different background programs but find them distracting.

"American Top 40" shows from the earlier 1/2 of the '80s. I found a site that has all the shows available for streaming.?

Kasey was a great DJ and listening to his shows takes me back to my teen years.

I guess it's kinda like "comfort food" for the ears. ?

Much like Dan said a few posts up above, I tend to listen to more mellow music. Good old rock n roll for just about everything else but when I’m at the bench it is a little more subdued. I had a small TV at on time, years ago, and found it too distracting so I got rid of it.

Great song David but I think I'd like a bit more variety. Don't think I could just listen to one song all the time.

nothing usually, the local station plays garbage. and that includes alice cooper's piss poor taste in music on his late show.

Last time I'd heard Cooper's programme was some 17 years ago. I thought it was great then -- can't attest to how it's been since. It was awesome hearing The Stooges, MC5, Velvet Underground, Judas Priest, 60's Garage, etc. coming from the radio.

Anything from Waylon Jennings to Nirvana, and Bob Seger to Sir-Mix-A-Lot, and a whole lot in between.

I also play videos off of youtube, mostly from a channel called Periscope Film. They have a bunch of old promotional films and documentaries from yesteryear that really get me in the mood for doing stock builds of classic vehicles.

Audible books.

Since I no longer spend three and a half hours/day toiling in Atlanta traffic, I gotta catch up on my reading somehow. At first, I thought it would be too distracting (like t.v.). Turns out, the two pass times are a perfect marriage; for me, at least.

Interesting. For myself I just prefer to have no distractions when building and just focus on whatever it is I'm working on.

I understand. It was just a joke, a play on words from what popped into my head because of the way you worded your first post. ??

I understand at that is the way I took it. I remember a song from years ago called "The sound of silence". Always liked it.

How could I ever forget those two guys?  I used to listen to the Central Park album all the time.

My dad had a cassette deck in his car back in the day I remember hearing the song in the car. Summer break after grade 1. Must have been '71 or '72. First tape deck of any kind I'd ever seen.

Now you're making me feel really old. I ordered a new '68 Chevrolet with the 8-track multiplex stereo. Just moved and unearthed a carrying case full of cassettes.
