ModelcarJR Posted February 26, 2022 Posted February 26, 2022 This Lindberg kit is next. Its been my experience that the Lindberg kits are generally molded well and this kit seems to be the same. Not much flash or mold lines and a well-engraved interior and engine. Too cold today to paint but I did manage to assemble the engine black and get it painted in the garage. The valve covers had some sink marks in them so I removed the chrome and filled the sinks. I assembled some other pieces, such as, the peculiar rear portions of the inner fender liners (see below). Not sure why the inner fender liner wasn't molded as 1 piece on each side but they're glued together now. I can now wire up the engine and get it done while I am waiting for the weather to warm up. I'll probably go with Red on Red for the paint. Thanks for looking! ? 3
bisc63 Posted February 26, 2022 Posted February 26, 2022 Love this body style, very sharp Olds. You're painting it the right color, too, so of course I'll be watching!
TransAmMike Posted February 26, 2022 Posted February 26, 2022 Yep, like the '66-67 GTO and Chevelle SS it's a fovorite of mine. Will be watching also.
slusher Posted February 26, 2022 Posted February 26, 2022 I will be watching John, I am hoping for warm weather. Man it rained this week here..
ModelcarJR Posted February 27, 2022 Author Posted February 27, 2022 Thanks, Rusty, Mike and Carl! I appreciate your comments! Still raining here so the only thing I could do was to wire and build the engine. Here are a couple of pics. The instructions indicate that the color should be Olds engine blue metallic but most of the engines that I saw in photos on the internet were this copper-like bronze. I have a little bit of Testors Dark Bronze Metallic so I used it. Thanks for looking! 2
Steve H Posted February 27, 2022 Posted February 27, 2022 Hi John, these cars have beautiful lines in my opinion. Look forward to seeing your build progress. Cheers, Steve
bisc63 Posted February 27, 2022 Posted February 27, 2022 Nice clean engine, and don't you love that they provide full accessory brackets. No floating alternator! 2
espo Posted February 27, 2022 Posted February 27, 2022 The engine is look'n good. The information you got on the engine color is off a little. Most of the standard V-8's used a sort of a Blue color but the 442 and other HiPerformance models used a slightly lighter Gold color. Engine looks great as is.
ModelcarJR Posted February 28, 2022 Author Posted February 28, 2022 Thanks, All! I appreciate your comments! Yes, the photos that I saw for 442s had colors all over the map. I thought about a gold color but opted for this color. The weather is improving so yesterday I painted the body. Unfortunately, it came out a little rough in spots so I spent the morning with the 4000 - 8000 cloths to smooth out the paint and took paint off a few edges. So today I gave it another coat of paint and two coats of clear. It came out beautifully so I hope I can just rub it out tomorrow with some Scatch-X without exposing the many edges on the body. I'll have to use plenty of Tamiya tape for the edges. Although the manufactured color is Spanish Red, I don't have any of that so I used Tamiya Italian Red. I also used Testors Revving Red on the interior and fortunately, not many metal flakes appeared in the paint. Its a little darker than the exterior color. Thanks for looking! 1
ModelcarJR Posted March 1, 2022 Author Posted March 1, 2022 Thanks, Carl and Rusty! I appreciate your comments! Well, the best laid plans.... Somehow, I let the paint dry for a few hours and when I looked at it again it looked like red sandpaper in the trunk area and other areas looked like they had contracted acne. So it led to hours of sanding out the paint with 4000 - 8000 sanding cloths. I got most of it out without exposing the edges using some tape but it sure was disappointing. But on a positive note, my Elmer's Glue method for the foil seems to be working. Thanks for looking! 2
Bainford Posted March 2, 2022 Posted March 2, 2022 Looking good, John. The engine really looks spot on. 1
ModelcarJR Posted March 3, 2022 Author Posted March 3, 2022 Thanks, Trevor! I appreciate your comment! I'm making pretty good progress now. After finishing the foil, installed the engine, finished the chassis and assembled the wheels and tires. I painted some red lines on the tires with acrylic paint. I'm working on the interior now. Also painted the inner fender liners flat black. Maybe they should be flat red but I don't have any flat red and don't have a need for it on most builds so I don't keep it on hand. Got to draw the line somewhere! Thanks for looking! ?
doorsovdoon Posted March 3, 2022 Posted March 3, 2022 Nice work, that red really pops. I like the black detail on the inner wheel wells. Very nice.
rightrudder Posted March 3, 2022 Posted March 3, 2022 Looking great! Perfect color for the engine, and your foil trim looks excellent. ? I'll have to try your Elmer's glue method at some point.
ModelcarJR Posted March 6, 2022 Author Posted March 6, 2022 Thanks, Gareth and Douglas! I appreciate your comments! I mocked up the wheels and tires and I had a feeling that they were too small while putting them together. I think Lindberg missed the boat on scale. So I pulled out the tires from the Reacher 70 Chevelle that I just finished. I found some wheel backs from spare parts for a 66 GTO and deeper dish keystones from a 68 Roadrunner. Those look much better! Thanks for looking! 1
mustang1989 Posted March 6, 2022 Posted March 6, 2022 (edited) I can't begin to say enough good about this build JR. That engine looks great and I really like the fact that Lindberg took the time to not only supply the necessary brackets for the accessories but also managed to mold drive belts that were fairly thin instead of the scale 2" thick belts that I see lots of times. Good call on the scale tires and excellent work on the paint and interior detailing. Can you expand on the Elmer's glue trick for the BMF process? I think I know where you're going with that but want to make sure that I'm on the same page. Edited March 6, 2022 by mustang1989
ModelcarJR Posted March 7, 2022 Author Posted March 7, 2022 (edited) Thanks, Joe and Carl! I appreciate your comments! Joe, I just took some Elmers Glue and thinned it with Acrylic thinner and then apply it to the trim surface that I am foiling. I try not to get too much on but enough that the foil will stick without lumping up. I use acrylic thinner because it evaporates slower than water which evaporates very quickly even if capped. I also let it set up for a minute or two so that it is not runny or too dry so it doesn't lump. As I cut strips of foil, once I got a few strips into the new sheet, some of the foil has enough glue that I didn't need to use the glue, for instance, in the interior. But I used the glue on the external foil around the greenhouse. The rear window and the side trim in the pictures below are chrome pieces from the kit. This one is done! The front bumper/grill fit very poorly and took a lot of cutting, scraping, thinning and it still left a bit of a gap between the body and the bumper. The rear bumper also has a bit of a gap. So the bumpers, wheels and tires were the weak spots of this kit but everything else fit very well! Thanks for looking! Oh, and I did add an outside mirror. I had to get one from the parts box as I mistook the one in the kit for a fuel pump early in the build and de-chromed it. When I was detaching the carb from parts tree I saw a piece that had ribs on it and I thought it was the fuel pump. I clipped it off and threw it into the purple pool with the carb. When I retrieved it, I noticed that there was no bottom to it. Then I realized it wasn't a fuel pump - its the external mirror! LOL! ? Edited March 7, 2022 by ModelcarJR Copy to Under Glass 2
mustang1989 Posted March 7, 2022 Posted March 7, 2022 What a beautiful car JR and thank you for the explanation on the Elmer's glue trick. I'm going to have to use that when I will need to get some new BMF.
ModelcarJR Posted March 8, 2022 Author Posted March 8, 2022 Thanks, David, Tony and Joe! I appreciate your comments! ?
