bobthehobbyguy Posted May 28, 2023 Posted May 28, 2023 (edited) A new scam to be aware of. https://www.cbsnews.com/news/bank-scam-text-message-chase-bank/?ftag=YHF4eb9d17 Edited May 28, 2023 by bobthehobbyguy 2
1972coronet Posted May 28, 2023 Posted May 28, 2023 I've been receiving numerous junk emails lately, mostly from "Fedex Package Fail Deliveries" [sic] . The only bank texts / emails I've received were for BofA and Well Fargo [sic] . Thanks for the heads up !
JollySipper Posted May 28, 2023 Posted May 28, 2023 I sometimes get a text that reads 'Did you authorize a withdrawl of X amount on this date?' They want you to "sign in" to your account to straighten it out, where they end up with your password and everything........
peteski Posted May 28, 2023 Posted May 28, 2023 Nothing new here - these types of scams or phishing have been around for years. As it has been constantly drilled into our heads for a long time: never click on any links in emails (especially ones which are "alerting" you to some serious immediate problem). If you are worried, go to the institution's website manually, then check the status (or call the institution using their phone number you already know). But some people never learn, and get scammed. In my browser, when I hover over what looks like legitimate email address in any email in my Inbox, it shows me the real address (which in phishing emails will be totally unrelated to what shows). 1
Dave Van Posted May 28, 2023 Posted May 28, 2023 I like the e-mails from an address with 48 numbers and letters....most of them X. The almost funny 'You Amazon account attempt shipping of Apple Ear Buds. Log in here to set account free from errors'...................OK Tarzan. 1
bobthehobbyguy Posted May 28, 2023 Author Posted May 28, 2023 While it's true about phasing emails that's not what the article is talking about. It's talking about text messages. I highly recommend that you read the article. This scam is not the same as phishing emails.
Rodent Posted May 28, 2023 Posted May 28, 2023 We have been banking with Chase for many years. I know what their texts look like. I received one recently when I transferred a significant amount of money to another bank. It was something like, Did you just transfer $xxx to blah blah account? Yes or No. That said, I hope folks pay attention to their email and texts and know which ones to ignore. 1
BlackSheep214 Posted May 28, 2023 Posted May 28, 2023 I get all kinds of junk emails telling to confirm my order when I know I rarely order anything online. These scammers must think we're that stupid.

bobthehobbyguy Posted May 28, 2023 Author Posted May 28, 2023 Email scams have been around for a while. Again that's not what the article is talking about. And yes text messages can be used in the same way but this article is not about that. Again read the article. It is worth your time.
iamsuperdan Posted May 28, 2023 Posted May 28, 2023 I get the text scams all the time. "Amazon" is the main culprit, along with a couple of banks I've never used.
Ace-Garageguy Posted May 28, 2023 Posted May 28, 2023 Bottom line is pretty simple, and it applies equally to ALL the phone, email, and text scams. NEVER GIVE ANYONE ACCOUNT NUMBERS, PINS, SS NUMBERS, PHONE NUMBERS, EMAIL ADDRESSES, PHYSICAL ADDRESSES, OR ANYTHING ELSE A CON CAN USE TO IMPERSONATE YOU TO HIJACK YOUR MONEY. And never respond to phone calls or texts purporting to be from a bank, govt. agency, or retailer, or click on links in emails, no matter how legit they may look to you. NEVER !!! 1
Mark Posted May 28, 2023 Posted May 28, 2023 Before there were texts, back when more people had telephones wired into their homes, there were phone calls. My mom got them every so often, even though she never set up online banking nor ever used an ATM. She never fell for any of them, she'd later tell them "I couldn't give you an account number even if I wanted to, I'm legally blind and couldn't read the small print on the bank statement". After a while they seem to have stopped trying. I picked up a couple of the phone calls. They'd say "we are calling from your bank", not mentioning the name of any bank. I'd ask them the name of the bank, and they'd try to bluff their way around it or not answer. After I asked them to go outside and check the name of the bank, they'd finally give up. I can’t believe anyone would give information to strangers that easily, yet here we are talking about how it still works every so often...
Can-Con Posted May 28, 2023 Posted May 28, 2023 When I get the calls that say from "my bank" or "windows" In a soft voice I tell them I'm not aloud to use a computer. they usually keep trying so I say "I'm not aloud to use the phone, they get mad at me and lock me in my room when they find out" Then I say I gotta go, an orderly sees me and looks mad at me again" and hang up Or sometimes when they say there's a problem with my computer I tell them "Yes, I know, I sent it down to them last week" when they start talking again I start hollering at them telling them I need that darn thing back, I'm due in court tomorrow to prosecute another a telephone fraud case and need files off the machine RIGHT NOW !!! They always hang up after that. ?

The store my son runs has a Western Union station. People STILL daily send $$$$ to other countries to 'Boy friends or girls' that are in trouble or need a ticket to the USA. He is instructed by corp to ask one time if the person really wants to send money....after that they are on their own. One lady sent over $10K......SAD in this day and age. 1

I just starting talking and panicking. "Look, I got rid of the body, but the carpet is done. I can't get the blood out. You need to figure this out because we are not going back to jail." They mumbled something and said, "wrong number" and hung up. Or when the JW knock on the front door. They're just doing their thing, so I'm not a jerk to them. I just tell them I'm spiritually satisfied, and they usually just look at each other and say thanks, then leave. 1
Mark Posted May 28, 2023 Posted May 28, 2023 No Soliciting signs posted at my home, and for the most part they have worked. Only two bell ringers in the last 5 years or so. The town/village/city cannot ban solicitors completely, as apparently that infringes on their rights. But they can allow the signs, and enact ordinances to get the solicitors to observe them. Only two have ignored them so far: one handing out religious pamphlets, the other wanting me to switch cell phone providers.
BlackSheep214 Posted May 28, 2023 Posted May 28, 2023 Lemme guess on the religious pamplets.... Jehovah Witness
Mark Posted May 29, 2023 Posted May 29, 2023 Actually, no. A guy I went to business school with (he was a "born again") actually invited two JW's into his house many years ago. They always go in pairs; while you are replying to one, the other is formulating the next point to hit you with. He actually debated them to a standstill, one versus two, until they got discouraged and left. Never came back. I just tell anyone handing out material of any kind that I'm glad they are happy in their lives, I'm also good, so let's just leave it at that... 1
Mike C Posted May 29, 2023 Posted May 29, 2023 A couple of weeks ago a hacker has tried and failed twice to get into my bank account. I guess they found my user name, maybe even my password. But even with my user name and password the only way you can log into my bank account is from MY computer. So the first day of attempts I got an email that they locked my account as there were too many failed attempts to log in. I think you get 5 tries before they lock it. So I changed my password. So it happened again and it got locked again. So this time I changed both my user name and password. There has been no more attempts now. This happened once before a number of years ago and I had to do the same thing.
Mark Posted May 31, 2023 Posted May 31, 2023 When I first got my cell phone, I did get a call from one of my (two) credit card companies. They described a transaction I had made earlier that day, using their card at a gas station that I frequented. Yes, it's legit, was my reply...no asking me for any card number, PIN, or anything else. Now, if they'd only asked about the transaction immediately before that one, which was something like $800 at a men's store in California (I've never been west of Denver). I had to wait for the statement to see that one...

I get a lot of those junk emails too, and many that I have won a prize like from Harbor Freight, Milwaukee Tools, etc.
John M. Posted June 1, 2023 Posted June 1, 2023 I deleted a link by accident that was e mailed to me and I wanted to share it everybody. It said that I can have a flying drone for free and all I had to do was pay the shipping. I didn't bite at all. After some digging, I discovered the e-mail originated in Nigeria. Greed is something that's not needed.
