“You mustn’t fool with Mother Nature”..Wasn't that from a commercial for hand soap in the 70s?Idk i picture it with some woman getting her hands soaked in the Palmava hand soap..Anyway,It cleared up ,in my area on Long Island. But it might happen again if the fires continue to burn up in the Great White North.Whatta gonna do.Hopefully people won’t lose their property,or even lives.Actually has anyone died cause the fires.Haven’t watched the news lately.Bla,too depressing.I have a friend of mine who lives in Buffalo, and has been following the story, and he thinks this smoke cloud could possible drift as far south as Florida.Again,Idk if that is possible,?‍♂️but that smoke cloud is huge.Oh and I read that they were thinking of cancelling the Belmont stakes this weekend. And then PETA demanded it,whatever.Ok well stay safe all.

Had to laugh at the NY Post front page - BLAME CANADA. That’s partially true but blame the wind too. Weather has a factor in this too.

There's a certain blonde lady down there doing just that.

How exactly does one blame a country for being on fire? Gosh darned Canada, control your lightning strikes, and enough with the unusually hot and dry weather.

To be honest, I wouldn’t know since I never watched South Park. Not my kind of cartoon…

Your welcome. Funny I was ten years old when that commercial aired, and I still remember it quite well. That and the fact my youngest sister was born that year. My mother had some kind of odd thing when to having all 6 of us. My eldest sister 1961, Older Brother 1963, Middle sister 1965, Me 1967, my youngest brother 1975,and last was my younger sister. the first four of us were all two years apart from one another, Then 8 years passed then again a two years apart for the end.

Well then. More evacuations, about 90 minutes from here. Town called Edson. Highway is closed, so no heading to the mountains this weekend.

I'm kinda having a hard time believing ALL these fires have been caused by lightning strikes.

Okay, first of all, I'm NOT picking on you, Rick.

But . . .

It is "Smokey Bear," not Smokey the Bear. Never in "his" history was he ever named with "the" in "his" name. It's always been "Smokey Bear."  Look closely at every official mention, Forest Service release, or advertisement.

You are not the only one that's ever made that mistake.  Many, many people seem to think his name is Smokey the Bear, but it is not.

The confusion began in the mid '50s when a song about Smokey was written and recorded. The songwriters, Steve Nelson and Jack Rollins, added "the" to his name to help with the musical cadence. That stuck and many, many people have adhered to the practice of adding "the"" to his name.

It's a little like saying, "Rick the Hanmore," or "Dan the Baker."

I work at the largest museum of firefighting apparatus, equipment, and memorabilia in the world. We even have one of the very first - if not THE first officially sanctioned - Smokey Bear costumes used by the forest service (circa 1950) on display. It has always been - officially - Smokey Bear. We gently correct people when they mis-state his name [out of due respect, you know]. In the manner of education, not criticism.

As an aside, his tag line was originally as you quoted - "Only you can prevent forest fires."  But in later years, as forest fires abated and wildland fires became a more frequent hazard/disaster, the Forest Service changed the tag line to "Only you can prevent wildland fires." More all-encompassing than  just 'forest fires.'

Okay, file this away in the "Useless Knowledge that No One Really Cares About" file.   Smokey just cares most about the message.

:)

You are right, Bill.  About 80% of wildfires (including forest fires) are human-caused.

We had the haze, smell and air quality alerts all the way down in Tennessee this past week

Can't speak for the fires out east, but here in Alberta there has been no rain to speak of for weeks. And definitely no thunder/lightning. I'm sure some there have been lightning strikes somewhere here, but not enough to start everything ablaze.

I'd say the vast majority of these fires are most certainly caused by humans. A hot exhaust from a bike or side by side in the tall grass? Errant cigarette? Firepit, even though there are firebans in place?

Frankly, I wonder if some of the fires haven't been intentionally set by people whose agenda includes adding fuel to the "existential threat of climate change" hysteria.

So you don't believe in climate change? : r/ConspiracyMemes

Anybody remember a couple years back when Australia was beset by wildfires, everyone was screaming about "it's all because of global warming", until the truth came out that the vast majority of the fires had been intentionally SET by humans?

Climate and weather are complex, and probably way more complex than the current crop of climate rebleaters are aware of. The snowpack in the watershed for the Colorado river was at record levels this year, and Lake Mead, Lake Powell, and others are actually rising...defying all the "expert" predictions. The snowpack in California's mountains was also at record levels, and many of Cali's reservoirs are overfull. And there's plenty more evidence that the "crisis" is nowhere near as dire as the hair-on-fire activists are claiming, and that the "crisis" may very well be the result of misinterpreted research data, and questionable data collection methods.

There is enough real data available to anyone intelligent enough to interpret it to at least make us question what we're being sold by the media and the powers-that-be.

One of the big fires in Nova Scotia was caused by someone's wheeler catching fire.

Nah. Evil old boomers, probably.

Everyone knows they're the ones responsible for everything wrong in the world.

Actually the fires were started to literally create a smoke screen for the alien invasion force from outer space.

I knew it had to be aliens who started the fires….I knew it…Duh????.
