Lincoln Flathead V-12 Powered Dry Lakes Style Modified

Built for the V-12 theme at this year’s NNL West, this is a vintage dry lakes style Modified roadster. “Modifieds”, as they were called, were the earliest pure straight line racers in the hot rod lineage with the first ones appearing on the dry lakes in Southern California as early as 1926. Patterned after the board track racers of the period, they were made by taking a Model T body and chassis and narrowing them to a width just wide enough to carry the driver and the 4 banger motor. Modifieds ran at the lakes until the early 1950’s, evolving to sleek V-8 powered missiles capable of speeds well in excess of 150 mph.

This one is based on the cool “Hot Rod Lincoln” Flathead from Early Years Resin, a scratch built frame and a cut down AMT Ala Kart ’29 Ford RPU body and interior.

Here are the details:

Bodywork and paint: AMT ’29 Ford “Ala Kart” roadster pickup body narrowed ¾”. Scratch built gas tank. AMT ’32 Ford grill shell. Duplicolor yellow paint, homemade “Lincoln V-12” logo decals.

Interior: AMT “Ala Kart” interior, narrowed ¾”, re-skinned with styrene “tuck and roll”. Cut down AMT ’29 Ford dashboard and ’36 Ford steering wheel.

Motor: Hot Rod Flathead V-12 from Early Years Resin. Scratch built headers, exhaust extensions and carburetor stacks.

Chassis: Scratch built from styrene strip with a Revell ’29 Ford RPU rear crossmember.

Suspension & brakes: AMT ’34 Ford front axle and spring and rear axle, AMT ’29 Ford rear spring and rear radius rods. Scratch built steering parts, front radius rods and drive shaft. Resin ’40 Ford brakes.

Wheels & tires: Modelhaus “milk truck” style wheels, Ma’s Resin “Rat Rod” rear tires, Revell ’37 Ford truck front tires.

Very nice Bernard, This looks great, the stance is perfect, the detail is superb and the subtle weathering is just right. Should be a show stopper.

This is cool Hot Rod. I like the Old School look, and all of the scratchbuilding, and modifications on the body, turned out very nice. V12 Lincoln engine is quite rare, but great Old School engine, big points for that choice. :D

Thanx for all the generous compliments, everyone. This turned in to a more detailed and complex build than I had intially intended, but I really got into it so it was quite enjoyable. And it is for the NNL West after all! I hope to see many of you there...

A few small details on the exterior and I'll be able to post some pics!! ...

I'm wracking my brain for a suitable wisecrack but it just won't come... :D Seriously, I'm glad to hear it. Can't wait to see it Under Glass!!!

How about "small details for a small car"? no...that just doesn't work... Oh well. Unless I have a problem, it will be done by Friday...

My gosh John! Thanx for the extraordinarily kind words. It was a great pleasure hanging with you and talking models and, once again, seeing your creative output "in the flesh". They all look even more exceptional when you can see them "up close and personal".

As I described above this project was done for the 2012 NNL West V-12 Theme and that my friend Curt Raitz had the idea that we build some dry lakes based cars for the theme table. Well the third member of our unholy modeling trio, Raul Perez, at whose house I stay every year when I make the trek south for NNL West, says he actually had the initial idea, not Curt. Either way, I have to admit I was sceptical about how good the results would be, but as Curt proved with his coupe, the concept had a great deal of potential.

Unfortunately, Raul is just getting over a massive case of Builder's Block which has lasted all of the past year, and he never was able to finish something for the show. Curt, on the other hand, not only finished his really cool chopped T coupe, he even went so far as to build a Dry lakes display base for our two cars.

Here's a couple of pics of Curt's Coupe on the show table:

And here are the two of our cars on display together:

Given that they were built without a single bit of communication or collaboration between us, I think the way the two paired-up was remarkably successful!

So here's the payoff...

Pretty cool, huh? Steve H. picked the pair-up over a boatload of really stunning Ferraris, a very nice Hot Rod Lincoln Replica, and some other equally cool Lincoln Powered customs and hot rods. So special Thanx to Curt for his model and for going the extra mile and building the base and effectively creating the pair-up, and to Steve for his undeniably good taste and perspicacity... Seriously, I'm really flattered and thrilled by the recognition.

Congratulations, my friends!! You both deserve the award!!

It may have been my feeble-minded idea, but you guys both did a GREATjob of making it a reality!!

Curt,

Make that base a little wider and I'll have mine ready for the 2013 NNL West!!
