MadKlingon Posted March 14, 2021 Posted March 14, 2021 Hi Gang: I'm starting a, "Hills Street Blues" inspired '70 Galaxie Police Car. I read through this thread and I was wondering what wheels and tires would be a better choice for the model? Which donor kit should I search for? Do you all have any other suggestions to build a more accurate police car? I plan on creating a dirty, well-worn vehicle and creating custom markings. I typical build armor and sci-fi so any general car building tips would also be appreciated. THANKS!
doorsovdoon Posted March 18, 2021 Posted March 18, 2021 It looks like very little effort went into re-boxing this one. Box art looks like armature hour in Paintshop pro, and I doubt they included a six cylinder either, still, I'll pick one up. It's a nice simple kit with lots of building options.

Well...I don't want to get too technical on this one, but I think in around 1970, NYPD still had the green, white and black color scheme on their cars. I think the "Hill St. Blues" look came in the mid-'70's, when by then, most if not all of the '70 Galaxies the NYPD used were probably long out of service. By then, I think the NYPD used the Plymouth Gran Fury & Chevy Caprice for their squads. Of course, there will likely be others on this board who know a WHOLE lot more about NYPD squads than I. Personally, I think the old white/green/black scheme would make a very interesting build, and there should be a lot of reference pics on the internet for one of those, but sticking to initial question, if I were to replace the tires and wheels in this kit, I would probably stay with the kit tires & hubcaps, and replace the wheels with the ones from the CHP Dodge Monaco (newest release only), or the MPC '78 Dodge Pickup. Actually, almost any skinnier generic steel wheel would probably do. I have even narrowed the wide ones in the other Dodge Monaco releases with decent results. I haven't checked the newest releases of this Ford, but I think it would come with either the old MPC or AMT Goodyear Polysteels, or maybe their new Polyglas GT's (but as blackwalls), which would be good for an early '70's period police build.

CapSat 6 Posted March 19, 2021 Posted March 19, 2021 I was able to check into this a little bit. Looks like for a Hill Street Blues build, one would want to start out with an AMT/MPC Dodge Monaco. Seems like they used a lot of those on the series. Or maybe you could use a '70 Galaxie for a "prequel" build...
the other Mike S. Posted April 2, 2021 Posted April 2, 2021 With all the mileage they seem to be getting out of this kit, it would be nice if Round 2 could finally correct the (LTD based) C-pillar and backlight to the more accurate "Galaxie" profile. However, I'm not holding my breath on this.lol!

But since they didn't, I simply plan to file the window frames out of it and build it as a 4 door hardtop Galaxie, as it has the correct hardtop roofline.
Misha Posted May 12, 2021 Posted May 12, 2021 Looks like NYPD may be returning to the green/black scheme... Cheers Misha
Danno Posted May 12, 2021 Posted May 12, 2021 Oooo, la, la! There's got to be a story behind this. Is it a one-off for the museum, or are they doing a "throwback" like NASCAR? Inquiring minds want to know - - - any Gnu Yawk insiders know anything about this? ??

Xingu Posted May 12, 2021 Posted May 12, 2021 Lets keep this on-topic. Please don't start posting random other cars in this thread. You can start new threads to discuss the other cars and paint schemes.
OldNYJim Posted May 13, 2021 Posted May 13, 2021 (edited) If I may reply to the above about the vintage livery modern car before we get back on topic...that’s been around for a few years - it’s in parades with the vintage cars very often around the city and it was at the NY Auto show on display one year. Has been around at least 5 years, if not longer. Just a fun retro piece that seems to confuse people who never saw the old liveries...there’s a modern car in rainbow livery that they use for the gay pride parade too (I snapped a pic but it’s not relevant to Galaxies so I’ll save that for another thread...) Anyhoo Back on topic (sorry Michael)... there’s an eBay seller doing era correct 70s NYPD police decals for the Galaxy so I just ordered a set. The seller’s named “policedecalsanddeals” - just ordered a set this week and I’ll post pics if anyone’s interested once they arrive. They look good in the pics anyway! Still need to figure out the proper paint code for the green color tho - next time I know I’ll be near one of these cars I’m going to use my Pantone color swatch book so I can match it up... Sledsel Posted May 23, 2021 Posted May 23, 2021 Has anyone corrected the roof line yet to be a true 4 door sedan?

keyser Posted June 2, 2021 Posted June 2, 2021 Bags, no trunk. Hmmm. Good job C, ya closed your “other” tabs. ?
stavanzer Posted July 6, 2021 Posted July 6, 2021 Notice that most of the Police Gear is blocked on the chrome tree. An odd choice, IMHO. Still the Taxi Sign and Luggage on their own are a great addition. Like the Surf Boards and Racks from the '65 Chevelle Surf Wagon, we will see that little bit of tooling again. (Can you say '78 Monaco Taxi?) Still, this will sell a bunch of kits. There have not been any dedicated Taxi kits since the Johan '59 Rambler wagon, and Lindberg Dodge Caravan, and that was a long time ago for both kits. Are there any other 4 door cars in the MPC / AMT tooling bank that might be plausibly resurrected as a Taxi?

Caprice, but that got turned into the Impala SS a couple years after. Back to Round 2, I suppose they could do the same formula with the Dodge Monaco sedan. I wouldn't be surprised if they also slapped out a taxi version of the Supernatural '67 Impala, to get another variation of that tool. It wouldn't be correct for a newly purchased taxi in the year 1967, but completely possible as a converted used car, circa 1970-1971. 1

A pity that due to the promo heritage of the '77-78 Monaco (debuted as a Plymouth RR) Mpc didn't tool up the front clip as a separate part, cuz that way it could've been similar to what Yodel back in the day did. Luckily there's the aftermarket.....but secretly hope the powers at R2 will find ROI in it (by maybe tooling up an new body, modified-reverse engineering)

Onwards to the Chevy Caprice to Impala SS retool, I wonder how many parts need to be retooled, changed and added, to have both a 96 Impala and Caprice in Revell' s productline. Any takers? ? For starters, I would make the yrunklid a separate part....... Edited July 6, 2021 by Luc Janssens

Scale Finishes can mix you a bottle. Or MCW. If you'd rather not go that route, I remember Jo-Han's Police Fury recommending plain old Testors gloss green. Perhaps that with literally a drop or two of black to one bottle, thinned for airbrushing, would be right? Charlie Larkin

I had wondered about the Testors gloss green myself - I think you're right, it's slightly too bright out of the bottle but it wouldn't take much to get it matched to the right color
