Erik Smith Posted March 13, 2020 Posted March 13, 2020 In the mail today...I really like the cheesy decals...probably toast if I dropped them in water, but...
OldNYJim Posted March 14, 2020 Posted March 14, 2020 Michael’s emailed me a 60% off voucher, a 40% off voucher, a $5 rewards voucher AND a 20% off entire purchase voucher this morning...so that secured my plans for the day ? They let me stack the vouchers (which some cool staff members will let you, and some won’t) so I ended up with these two for just under $10 each, after deals: And whilst I was braving the Coronovirus in Manhattan I picked up a few other essentials to see me through the apocalypse...some sign vinyl, glue, brass stock, decal set and some little baggies for parts organizing Then I came home and my wife surprised me with a label maker I’d been looking at for a few weeks! Finally I can label all my draws so I don’t have to look through 10 of them to remember where I put stuff! ?? Not a bad haul today ?

The battery box was assembled but looks like it was never used (copper is too clean). The optional front end with the clear lense along with the NASCAR parts are in there. I have a 64 convertible promo too but the windshield header it gone

89AKurt Posted March 15, 2020 Posted March 15, 2020 Picked up a Testors "Those Famous Fords" '48 Coupe at the Phoenix model swap today. Instead of posting a picture of the model, here is the Mercury my dad owned, which is what I hope to build. If anyone happens to see this post, and knows if there was a conversion, please let me know. I also searched this forum for any built models, and didn't find any, why?
64Comet404 Posted March 15, 2020 Posted March 15, 2020 I picked up some paints which were on sale at my LHS. Hoping to get some projects moved forward during my unexpected vacation.

It looks like your Father is about to get stuck. At first glance the car looks like a '41 Ford. After you mention that it's a Mercury I can see the muddy grill in the shadows. I think if you used the font hood, fenders, and bumper from the AMT '41 Ford Woody that would leave scratch building the grill and the tail lamps as they were different from the Fords. The dash would also have to be changed.

There should be some photos out there on google to show the differences. The first '39 Mercs had a lot of distinct body shapes, but the '41 thru '48s shared the basic body with the Fords. After WWII the Mercury also got a longer front end and far more distinct grill area. The '41's fenders have a little different shape on the Mercury and it would be a good idea to study a few pictures before slicing and dicing the fenders.
jchrisf Posted March 15, 2020 Posted March 15, 2020 got these two.. our last local hobby store is going out of business and I got them half off. Both original and sealed in box and I haven't opened them yet. The Petty 1/16 was $25.

unclescott58 Posted March 18, 2020 Posted March 18, 2020 Today I got two kits I have no intention of ever building. They are AMT's recent reissues of two Buicks. Their '65 Riviera. And '66 Wildcat. Two kits that I love. And have built a couple of each over the years. So why buy two more with the intention of never building them? The box art. They have restored the packaging basically back to their original box art designs. To box art designs I've liked, but never had the opportunity to buy back in the day. I've done this with at least one other kit. Their '71 "Birds of Paradise" Thunderbird they reissued a couple of years ago. It too will probably never be built by me. Like the Buicks, I have another previously built one. And did not need another. But, I liked the box art on that one too. I have bought other recent AMT and MPC kits because of the restoration of old style box art. But in those cases, always with the intention of someday building the kit within. In the three cases mentioned above, I just bought them for the love of the box art. In someways that seems kind of sad. I've always believe the purpose of buying models is to build them. Not just collect them. At the same time, it's kind of nice to now in life to have money and space to buy with collecting in mind.
Snake45 Posted March 18, 2020 Posted March 18, 2020 My first '65 Riv--pieces of which got incorporated into a build I did last year--came in that box. As to the Wildcat, I dunno if that's the original box art, but it's certainly in the style of AMT's '66 box art. I too have bought several of those "retro box" reissues just for the art. And I collect the originals whenever I can. So far I have the Skylark, Barracuda, Falcon, both Corvettes, and the Mustang HT/convertible. Just last week I got the '66 Riviera. I think I have the Impala convertible, too--have to check.
