This morning everything outside is solid ice and it's raining, which is freezing upon landing. I chipped the ice off both cars. The driveway and my development streets are icy. I slipped twice getting up to the corner of a main road. Right as I sat there thinking I really didn't want to drive to work in this mess, I get a ping from my boss. The ice was worse at his house, so he said to work from home. I was really happy to turn around and get back inside the warm house!

Watching Freiburger and Finnegan drink the bacon and teriyaki sodas

Wow, I still get a sympathetic reflex from that, and it's been months sincw I watched that HotRod Garage!

I finally got the PT Cruiser from Hell back into the hands of its owner. The last monkeys who worked on it put a timing belt in 35,000 miles ago...(recommended replacement interval is 90.000 miles... and it already failed because somebody stretched/cut the edge while doing the job), and since then, the owner overheated it and weakened the head gasket. We nursed it for as long as possible, until the timing belt let go unexpectedly (it was a "reputable" shop that did the work).

Everything that could possibly go wrong on a job went wrong on this one, and the thing is a total PITA to work on under the best circumstances. I did the entire top-end job in my unheated, un-enclosed carport, because she won't trust anyone but me to touch it anymore, and we've been friends for 30 years. Oh, did I mention that the last pack of thieves / morons / hackers charged her for a head-gasket last time too, and that it's never really been replaced??

Started on the first turn of the key, runs great, no leaks, everything works. What a concept.

My grandson come over today for awhile, and the first thing he noticed was that the Lionel train set was no longer in the living room. Guess he'll have to wait 'til after Thanksgiving when I set it up around our Christmas tree again. Wish I could've taken him to the hobby shop with me today, but he's only 16 1/2 months old.

The PT Cruiser that was such a total PITA is performing perfectly, the owner is happy as a clam, and wants me to do the rest of the remedial work it needs (everything in the front end is worn out, because Chrysler didn't bother to spend the 15 cents extra per unit to put grease-fittings on stuff) to be back in good-as-new condition.

It's nice to do work for people who have an emotional investment in their vehicles, and would prefer to keep a paid-for old friend running right than dump it for a shiny-new-car-payment.

During my tech class everyday, I take the trashcan down to the dumpster.

Today, I emptied the can in it, but saw something interesting.

4 reels of 16mm film and some arrows! I dunno what I'll use em for, but they're pretty cool. I'll have to erase em when I get home.

I was finally able to finish emptying one of my two storage lockers (the larger one) today, and I'm thrilled to pieces to put that chapter of my recent move behind me.

I'm off for the holiday today. My wife is not. I'm spending the day up in the model room. Left over Chinese food for lunch. It should be a good day.

And I managed to finish the Volare. Life is good!

Put a pair of outer tie-rod ends in the PT from Hell yesterday. Turned the little car from feeling like a worn-out piece of junk on its last legs into a smooth, solid, noise-free ride. Measured the rod ends carefully, and installed carefully, compensating for the 5.5mm difference in length. No alignment necessary, tracks straight, wheel centered.

Also put the lie to the $800+ she'd been quoted (by several "mechanics") to replace the wheel bearings, CV joints, lower balljoints and a rebuilt steering rack...which the other guys said were all worn out and dangerous. Did the whole job in about an hour, $55 parts.
