iamsuperdan Posted February 17, 2017 Posted February 17, 2017 TOday? Weather has been warm enough over the past few days that I've been able to get into the garage and do some spray painting on some of the kits I started over the winter. Forward progress...yay!
von Zipper Posted February 17, 2017 Posted February 17, 2017 A family friend came up to visit this weekend and brought 2 dozen paczki from Hamtramck 8-lemon , 8-prune and 8-apple (my favorite)

iamsuperdan Posted February 21, 2017 Posted February 21, 2017 Not sure if this should go in the "pleased me" thread or the "irked me" thread. But it just makes me chuckle, so I guess this is the better place for it. Had a client in this morning looking for new trucks. No problem. In the words of the client; "I don't want quotes on a new Chev. Horrible trucks. I'll only look at the GMC."He then went on to explain that Chevrolets were unreliable and prone to issues, and how in his research and experience, he's found GMC to be the most reliable trucks out there.I considered getting into it, but then remembered that even when completely wrong and ridiculous, the customer is always right. I laughed to myself, and am now finding a half dozen new GMCs for him. Clients like this keep it interesting around here for sure.

Hmmm, I've driven Chevy trucks for almost 40 years and they've been pretty reliable to me. I needed a change and last year bought an F-150, and so far I'm likin' the change. While GMC advertises their trucks as "professional grade" that's a joke as I've worked on many construction jobs and have seen hundreds of trucks belonging to the workers or contractors. Most all of them were either Ford or Chevy trucks.
iamsuperdan Posted February 21, 2017 Posted February 21, 2017 I'm more amused by the fact that Chevs and GMCs are built on the same production line, using all of the same mechanical and drivetrain parts. Smae engine, frame, transmission, brakes, suspension, steering, everything. Other than body panels and colour of the dash lights, they're the same truck. So how he could find the Chevs to be unreliable and the GMCs to be the best is beyond me.Around here, it's a pretty even split among the different brands.

Were then, still are for the most part, except for badging, trim and a few options. Sometimes it's just amazing the erroneous conclusions people can come up with. In times past, GMC vehicles could be a little more different from their Chevy brethren. The big 'ol GMC inline 6. though it looked very much like the smaller displacement Chevy engine, was actually an entirely different piece, bigger externally as well as internally, and longer overall. GMC also sourced V8 engines from Pontiac before going all Chevy corporate. PS. Not being in sales myself, I long ago abandoned any pretext that "the customer is always right". Xingu Posted February 21, 2017 Posted February 21, 2017 On some models, GMC offers a larger engine that you cannot get with the Chevy. Was that way with my Yukon. Everything else is just a little different looking trim here and there. I always end up with GMC (sometimes Ford), simply because my local Chevy dealer never wants to give me a deal.
Tom Geiger Posted February 22, 2017 Posted February 22, 2017 Many years ago my father in law wanted a new Toyota Corolla. This was when the Corolla and the Geo Prizm was the exact same car. A buddy-0-mine worked at a Chevy dealer and as a favor agreed to give me a cost deal on a Prizm for him. My father in law shows up with a brand new Corolla before I could react. I asked him why since I could have saved him several thousand dollars... he said the Toyota salesmen told him that Toyota sold the Corollas that failed their quality test to Chevrolet to sell as Geo Prizms! And he believed it! And paid full list as usual.

In the half tons, on upper end trim levels, he might have had a point. The GMC 1500 SLT and Denali models use the 8-speed transmission, which is unavailable in a Chev product. Likewise, the 6.2L EcoTec3 V8 is not available in most Chev 1500 models. However, in this case, he was looking at the 1 ton, which is mechanically identical. Yet people swear the Nissan is the better vehicle. However, if anyone has been looking at these, go with the Chev. It has a better warranty and better fleet concessions.

Even further confusing to the average Joe when Consumer Reports lists identical twins (for instance Ford Taurus and Mercury Sable) with one on the recommended list and one on the list of cars to avoid.

oldnslow Posted February 25, 2017 Posted February 25, 2017 Beautiful day , picking tomatoes and peppers , house remodel inside work is almost done.
Tom Geiger Posted February 25, 2017 Posted February 25, 2017 I'm off to "The Big Sit", a get together by the Philly Boys. It's the anti-show. Just a bunch of guys talking models, with their models on display but not registered and no awards of any kind. And it attracts over 50 people... more and more every year. Looking forward to seeing folks who have been hibernating all winter. And it should be 75 out today! I have my short sleeve club shirt on!
HomerS Posted March 15, 2017 Posted March 15, 2017 The local pet food pantry had to vacate their free space at months end and time was quickly running out but the news came out today that they've secured another location so they can keep helping those families who need help to keep their furry family members.I gotta say that all the years I've volunteered here, I've never met one person who didn't appreciate the volunteers and what we do. We're all animal lovers and treat our pets as family so we are happy to help. If people cant afford to keep their animals, they set them free or dump them at the shelter.....either way it's moving the problem not solving the problem.....that's why we do it

The GMC truck line was started so that General Motors dealers other than Chevy had trucks to sell (Buick, Cadillac, Oldsmobile & Pontiac) and to "suggest" that they were better and thus sold at the "premium" GM dealers they had some rather insignificant enhancements. It is amazing that some people really began believing they were in fact superior to Chevy trucks. I was Chief Engineer for a special machine builder and we had a manufacturing manager who always insisted on the company buying GMC trucks (which cost more) so I was able to take him on a tour of the Pontiac (MI) truck plant and we showed him Chevy and GMC pickups going down the same line, being assembled with the same parts, but I still think he wasn't convinced.
High octane Posted March 16, 2017 Posted March 16, 2017 Took my grandson to the hobby shop and bought him his first model.Very good, how old is he? Mine is only 3 1/2 so I'm gonna wait awhile before I introduce him to model cars. Of course I already have him running the Lionel train set at Christmas time.
mikemodeler Posted March 16, 2017 Posted March 16, 2017 Went to Hobby Lobby today, used my coupon for 40% off a 68 El Camino. Looked at the clearance models and was tempted, but passed because that money will be going to Harry's Fund instead. He needs the money more than Hobby Lobby does and I surely don't need another model that I won't build!

Rodent Posted March 17, 2017 Posted March 17, 2017 He will be 8 in May.So, spill the beans Pat. What did he get today? Curious about what someone his age would pick.I was 9 when the neighbor injured his back. He asked my dad if he could hire me to mow the lawn. Wages were set at $2.00, which was the cost of a 1/25 car at the time. This went on for several years, and each time MPC raised the price of a kit, I had to plead the case and raise my price. Finally wound up at $5.00 and I was mowing and edging three neighbor's yards to feed my model addiction. I hope that the little guy enjoys building his first of 13000 kits!

He picked the Revell Porsche 918 Spyder. I never clued in until we were back at the house that it was an advanced model. I spent quite bit of time showing him how to detach the parts, file the stubs and seams and Then glue them. The little shop we were at only had some tube glue so I got him to cut some 1" square cardboard pieces, put a drop of glue on one, use a toothpick to transfer the glue to the part. I showed him how to hold the rattle can away from the part and to swipe across. He has about six parts installed on the motor. I am on an iPad and have no clue how to post pictures.I will post one when I get home. He was so engrossed in it last night that after he went to bed, my daughter asked me to stay another day to work on it with him. He actually said it was fun.Good feeling.
