Guest Posted January 9, 2015 Share Posted January 9, 2015 Yeah that mod is on the forefront of my mind with my Pacer. With all that glass, how am I gonna hide that roll cage? Like I did with my Studebaker, changing my Cannonballer into a Carrera Panamericana racer, the way the Pacer looks for the Cannonball will not be it's final form. I need the roll cage. It's going to have to be the tightest cage I've ever done. EDIT: I've got it. Tinted windows. I've been thinking about that for my Escort build. On one hand, it needs a cage. On the other, there are states that don't allow tinted windows. Another thing with tinted windows is if you tint them dark enough that the roll cage isn't visible, you also aren't going to be able to see the rest of the interior very well. So, which do we do? Tint our windows to hide the cage, allow the cage to be visible or just go without a cage? I'm kinda thinking about just doing a good sized hoop behind the front seats in line with the B pillar with a cross brace and door bar just below the top of the body. Not ideal. But easier to hide and better than nothing. I'm going to go with some light tint. I'm going to combine that with a very tight-to-the-roof roll cage, to make the roll cage less noticeable. Going super dark would be, as you pointed out, counter productive. After the Cannonball, the car will be repainted and have a wheel change and made into a drift car. New Jersey doesn't allow tint on the windshield or the two front windows. That's for police safety, so they can see the driver as they approach the car. I see the point. But all you need to do is make sure it's legal in the state of the license plate you put on the car. No state can issue tickets on equipment violations for cars licensed outside their jurisdiction. Guest Posted January 9, 2015 Share Posted January 9, 2015 Progress report: I finally got most of the induction sorted out. I decided to go with a fuel injection setup. The intake tubes and plenum are from an old Monogram Maserati 3500 GT. I modified them to make them work with the 1.6 four cylinder. It's a tight fit. But, it goes in OK. I had to make a little clearance on the core support for the turbo. I cut the master cylinder loose and filled in the resulting hole. Once the engine is in permanent, I can place it wherever I need to. I also have the inter cooler roughed in. The center section is one of the half radiators from the Revell Matt Hay's Pro Street Thunderbird. The rest is scratch built. I'll soak it the stripper to get rid of the remaining chrome before putty, primer and paint. I'm thinking about enlarging the opening in the front valence and boxing it to direct the air into the inter cooler. It depends on how much room I have left to work with though. Paint the same color as the interior and it should almost blend in .I also thought if you painted the top of the main bar like wood, then put some cloths hangers with some clothing on them would work in the right car. The Joe Dirt car has a mop handle across the top with a sleeveless flannel shirt. I immediately thought about the Bug, and an AMC pacer, but those have been taken. I have a Gremlin kit. Nothing much more sleeper than a Gremlin. I also have an Opel GT. They were sporty little things, but nowhere near fast. I also thought of the Mustang II but somebody else is doing one. Other possibilities include a 77 Chevy Van (Lots of fuel capacity) 1969 Johan Rambler SC which is actually a 67 or so rambler IIRC. It could be the base for a good sleeper. Any of the AMCs should be fitted with a modern Chrysler powerplant to keep it in the family. That would mean a new Hemi, or a Viper V-10 mill. Either would give the top speed needed and be a bit more fuel efficient than an older big block. Other possibilities would be a Volkswagen Bus with a Porsche 6 or a Dodge A-100 pickup with a modern powerplant. They even made camper versions of the A-100. One other thought is a 1977 Nova if I can pick up the reissue cheaply. Any of the '70s cars would have to have the full disco treatment with T-Tops, fender flares, rear and quarter window louvers, foglamps and the loudest tape graphics available. It seems that the mirrors, taillights, wipers,grill,and all the other small parts that were in a small container got pitched.
