Looks like a nice vice. I like the pins that are movable. !00 is not cheap but looks to be worth it to me.

Yeah the company makes a ton of great good looking tools for us. Besides the vice heres 3 others the rolling set, photoetch bending tool, and circle cutter.

I think I’m calling this floor pan done.  This is my first attempt at weathering the undercarriage of a car model.  It’s not perfect but I can live with it.  Tried dry brushing today for the first time.  I think I got a little heavy-handed in some areas and a bit light in others.  But I think I’m figuring it out.

Disclaimer- I’m winging a lot of this and am by no means an expert.  As such, this isn’t meant to be a tutorial.  Just showing you how I did it, right way or wrong.  Follow along at your own risk!?

Here’s a recap of what I did.

1. Floor pan was shot in grey primer, detail painted, and then shot with gloss clear.  I picked this tip up from the military guys.  The purpose of the gloss clear is to let the wash (next step) flow better and follow the contours.

2. Next I slathered on Mr Weathering multi black.  I wasn’t worried about being neat at this stage.  It will get cleaned up on the next step.

3. Now it was time for clean up.  Mr weathering color solvent was used to remove the excess wash.

4. The wash I used is oil based, so I let everything cure for a couple of weeks.  Then I shot the whole thing with flat clear.

5. Today was all about dry brushing.  Another tip I learned from the armor guys is that dry brushing works best over a flat finish.  It gives the paint something to grab onto.  For this last step, I used MM light sea grey.  It’s a touch lighter than the base color.  To my eyes it’s almost too subtle, but I’d rather quit while I’m ahead than go too far and have to start over.

That’s it!  Questions, comments, and criticisms are welcome.?

I've been wanting to work on something for a while now, so I finally did. I cut the hood off the Surf Shark. About to work on getting the transmission out of the chassis plate.20230707_011318.jpg.e9f301562e21197cfe2a0a07209ee635.jpg

Have a kit that has been going on for a long time. It's one of those kits that just kicks your butt every step of the way. From missing parts, to shipping delays for those missing parts, to poor fit, to being a dummy and breaking delicate parts. Ugh.

Anyway...

While I calm myself down from the most recent curse session at the bench, I did a little more on a couple of projects.

Hollowed out the grille for this Ford van, and out some plastic mesh behind. Looks much better now.

And then assembled some wheels I printed up for a project. Trying to decide if I want to leave the half center caps, as it's the look I wanted, or if I paint the lug nuts and leave them exposed, as I kind of like that look too. Hmm...

Also printed the Hellcat engine for this one. Needs some sanding and cleanup before assembly.

I vote for the center cap look.

I vote without them.

I agree with you both!

I'm actually leaning towards the center cap, as that's what I envisioned in the first place.

The funny thing is, I haven't even started the kit yet. Box open, all bags still sealed. Maybe I should get rolling on that.

Paint shop has been busy last few days, did a monogram super bee in dodge light bronze and a 66 mustang in ford emberglo.

Tried doing a script by foiling under the paint and using a toothpick soaked in lacquer thinner.  My first attempt.  Not perfect but I can live with it.  I’ll keep working at it on the next few projects.  I can see how this would be the way to go if you can keep the paint layers thin enough.

Not bad advice, looks good.

Tried another new technique tonight.  Window masking this time.  Seems like lately every time I’m at the bench it becomes a new experiment.  Again not perfect, but not bad for a first attempt.

Looks good! I think experimentation is a lot of fun. I've learned a lot of stuff, just by messing around at the workbench.

Revell Lancia Stratos. As the kit decals, possibly ten years plus old, look as if they on a piece of cardboard, I have taken a day or so searching through two or more boxes of decals. Having searched the web and seen a dark blue version of the car, have painted the body with a rattle can Plasti-Kote Dark Blue, have now laid up some decals.

It is now under a coat of Plasti-Kote gloss clear.

Nice!  One of my favorite cars.  How’s the kit quality?

Thanks atomicholiday. The kit is an early one so problems with fit. I need to take off various chassis parts as the body is hampered by them being in the way, so may have shave various parts down.

That looks great! Is that the AK Super Chrome?

No it’s spazstix. It’s been awhile since I’ve chromed anything so I think I went a tiny tiny bit heavy.

Very clean man ??. Not sure if it’s how the pic took, but looks like you could polish it some more or is that the look you’re going for?

What I accomplished today was destroying my paint job using dupli color clear.  Did about 4 coats each one light to medium with 10 mins between coats. I than decided to do a heavy coat at the end, and it made dark patches in the color, and made small scratches on the hood, and the trunk, and some on each side of the body. It’s hard to explain, but looks like someone took a blade to it. I guess I went too heavy as I suck with rattle cans. So $20 down the drain cause the can going in the trash, and $10 bottle of stripper wasted, and now hours of work tryna fix all the issues it created. My gut told me not to get it as I do 2K with no issues, but I was willing to try something different cause of my son.

Man Dusty, that sucks.  Sorry to hear.   What type paint was your color coat?

I've spent most of the summer stripping paint jobs, trying to get my technique down.   This is a very small consolation and sounds like I'm too late this time anyway,  but I've had really good luck stripping Dupli Color with cheap 90% iso alcohol.   Might save you a few bucks in the future.
